Sharing this subscriber comic (from Feb) today bc we’ve made SO much progress in this area in just 6 months that I think it’s worth mentioning! 🎉 Background: over the years, for a number of logistical reasons ( the fact that Ben works evenings 3 nights/week), I became the default and preferred bedtime parent for both of our kids. This meant that if I was at home, I had to be the one to put them to bed or we’d face serious meltdowns. Every night, bedtime would drag on for an hour or so and I would be frazzled, angry, and resentful while Ben was downstairs relaxing after doing the dishes. Back in January, we decided that this HAD to change and so we took steps to change it. “All” it took (lol) was us setting keeping some serious bedtime boundaries, working together, and getting through some horribly tough nights at the beginning…but now we’ve FINALLY gotten to a place where Ben can put the kids to bed while I’m at home (downstairs) without a total meltdown. This is HUGE for us! In fact, when Ben puts them to bed they get through the bedtime routine MUCH faster he gets a break from dish duty (which I don’t mind at all if it means I don’t have to do bedtime) so it’s a win-win for all. I say all of this for those of you who, like me, thought you were stuck being the only parent who could do bedtime. It IS possible to break the preferred parent cycle but it takes serious buy-in from both parents and a plan of action. Life lately dump 💖 I’ve been feeling really tired lately… more tired than usual. The busy days at work. The busy evenings coming home and having to be present for my children (when all I really want is rest). The broken sleep at night from the baby waking up. People often wonder how do us mothers do it? How do we get through balancing the multitude of responsibilities while caring and pouring into the lives of little humans and also sustaining any ounce of energy to carry on ourselves? I often question this myself. But I know that there truly is nothing to question. For it is sheerly by grace- God’s grace that we are able to withstand the trenches of motherhood. And though we tend to do it all- remember that we don’t need to do it alone. May we lean on God as a reminder of this gift, each other and our villages to support us. Wrestling with your own mind lately on who or what you “want to be doing” in your current season? . I was asked recently in an interview what I wanted to do with my social media “next”, and while I love this community, the space and all of the connections made here… . This is not what I was called to do. God called me to be a wife, a mother, a business partner, a homemaker and to bring women out of the pits of loneliness and brig them together 🤍 So for now I will focus on making my house a home (because without me that is all it is, a house), serving my husband and our business/ farm to the best of my ability and raisin babies- cultivating courage and being famous to my family. Stop tying to prove your worth because this space is making you question if what you do matters enough and know the work you are doing is for a higher power and people appreciate and need what you do, no matter what it may be . What if we stop putting unrealistic expectations on ourselves that we have to be the best at everything, that we have to build some sort of empire, we don’t have to be liked by everyone, that we don’t need dominate the same things other women are? What if you leaned into what it is you really want to be doing and forget the rest?? ⬅️ . What if we’re simply happy building a life we really love? Serving the parts that help us grow and succeed in our own ways? What if we start pouring more into things that bring us joy and embrace what we do get done and are able to do, instead looking so far into the future of what we have yet to do. What if we just start living more in the present? I say we focus on our current season and let that really satisfy us. . . . . I believed that my body was hardwired to feel constant anxiety, and I mistook the symptoms of chronic stress as my personality traits. I didn’t know that burnout stems from our nervous system being stuck in a state of fight or flight. Chronic fight or flight doesn’t just affect our mental health and how we show up as moms and partners, it can have catastrophic effects on our physical health. (This could be why you have so many unexplained chronic symptoms) The first step in coming out of fight or flight is being able to show your body that it is SAFE. Even though we may consciously know that we are not in physical danger, our nervous system has not received the memo. One quick and easy way to signal safety to your body right now is to focus on your breathing. If your breathing tends to be quick and shallow OR if you find yourself frequently holding your breath, this is conveying to your nervous system that you are in a constant state of danger and it sends signals to the brain that you need to be on high alert. ✨ Start by talking a full, deep breath in, completely filling your lungs. ✨ Take a pause at the top of your inhalation, letting your body feel the sensation of being fully oxygenated. ✨ Then, exhale slowly and fully, making your exhale longer than your inhale and allowing your chest and abdomen to relax as you release the breath. I used to be obsessed with self help and was a certified spiritual junkie. I went to retreats, workshops, read books, meditated, did yoga, all of it. Despite these different tools, I just kept feeling I needed to keep growing & getting better. I was never good enough. Then I chose to become a mama. With each pregnancy, I was emotional; and after each birth, I became ill. My body seemed uncomfortable with motherhood & before I knew it, I went from postpartum straight into perimenopause. I didn’t recognise the woman I was becoming. That’s when I grew bored of my own torture. What nobody tells you about growth & self-help, is the answers aren’t found in a book or at a retreat. It requires more than a few hundred pages or some days in the sun to find the answers you’re looking for. This week’s newsletter shared my journey of finally getting my kids to sleep in their own beds. It’s been a challenge from Lennon refusing to sleep and partying in bed until midnight (see next slide) to Rye’s resistance to sleeping in his own bed. Many mornings were fueled by pure exhaustion. Somehow, we landed on a routine of bath time followed by 30 minutes of iPad time in bed to wind down. I confess, a wave of guilt washed over me. Letting my kids fall asleep with a device felt wrong. But then I stopped myself – why the guilt? I’m simply surviving! I need rest to run my business and be a good partner and parent. So, I wrote this to liberate myself a bit from parenting guilt. I’ve been plugging away at my book (first draft due Nov 1st! 🤪) and as I’ve been doing so, I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about the way that so many of us have internalized the *very different* societal expectations for men vs. women (and moms vs. dads)… …I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again—double standards hurt ALL OF US and we are *all* deeply affected by them (whether we realize it or not). I am (mostly) a ‘ride or die’ in the #debtfree life. I love being debt free (except mortgage - full transparency). Love helping people become debt free. BUT, I also think credit cards have AMAZING benefits ***when used responsibly!!** I have never paid credit card interest since I (accidentally) opened my first credit card at 18. Forever thanks to my step dad Gary for a crash course in credit/credit cards after frantically coming home wondering what I had done 🫣 While still a newbie to (travel) credit card rewards, our Chase sapphire card has proven to be my new favorite rewards card. I was always VERY hesitant and against cards with annual fees, but after having multiple people recommend this card - I caved and so glad I did! Having this trip paid for (hotel) and now flying 4/6 of us for FREE next month with the sign up bonus (+ some Delta gold card points) - it. is. worth. Every. Penny! This really can go either way. Whether you ascribe to more punitive-based parenting or to a gentler method, someone is ready to tell you that you’re not measuring up. Not doing enough. Not good enough. It a lie! We are humans. We will fall short sometimes. We are nuanced. We won’t always agree with every piece of advice someone gives us. But our kids are so forgiving, and so resilient, if we really truly love them and always try our best to treat them and lead them well. That is the beauty of the relationship we have with them! They are just as nuanced as we are. Sometimes they need a long hug and grace. Sometimes they need to be told that we have their best interests at heart and won’t be compromising at all! Sometimes they will cry, and we’ll need to lovingly hold the line anyway. I don’t believe that we need to be so stressed and obsessed with every little thing we do and say every single day. Our love and consistency matters more than whether we followed a script. At some point, we have to have the humility to acknowledge that we can’t be perfect, decide to tune out those that would tell us we’re not doing enough, and confidently do our best because we love our kids.
