Na quarta agora, dia 08 de maio, vi o José nascer. Foi a segunda vez que acompanhei a Brennda, a primeira foi em 2022, no nascimento da Maria. Eu estava ali, vendo a vida, diante dos meus olhos. A vida…de novo ela, acontecendo… É difícil falar de vida nesse momento. Tanta coisa ao mesmo tempo…silêncio, luto, ressignificado, catarse. Afinal, é assim a vida. Vida: propriedade que caracteriza os organismos, cuja existência evolui do nascimento até a morte. Semana passada eu pedi um tempo das redes e não imaginava que ia precisar sair da minha “caverna” para vir aqui, nas redes sociais, pra pedir ajuda pro Rio Grande do Sul. Meu Estado. Catástofre. Onde eu nasci, cresci, vivi enorme parte da vida. Tudo debaixo de muita água. Como assim? Logo após o nascimento do José, eu desabei. Deixei a emoção transbordar. Back to my work-in-progress doula inspired ceramic project! Now that these hand made bones are bisque fired I’m thinking about glazing it with one of the purple glazes I mixed up from my winter glaze class @chesapeakeartscenter 💜 My hope for this project once it’s been glazed is to build off of these three pieces with fiber art to create a 3D layered pelvic floor I can use in my prenatal sessions! I’m also thinking about testing out a few pocket sized versions to be able to have a mini-pelvis on deck when explaining birth positions and labor progress everywhere I go! Okay, okay, I won’t carry them everywhereeeee I go, but I do think the visual comes in handy when trying to understand how different position can help labor along! Motherhood, community & coffee - Part III The other interesting part of the story is that through the years, I’ve found myself learning about community, almost exclusively, from other women. I never had sisters, was never in a sorority, actually experienced women turn on me, but finally in my mid-late twenties, I learned what it meant to find a group of women that I can (still) call sisters. They’ve shown me IRL what the textbooks teach about what our brains need to feel safe and step into thriving. It started during a time when we all lived in NYC, many of us within a few blocks of each other. Now, we’re all over the country and world, many with babies of our own, and yet nothing’s changed. Lately, I find myself smiling at a particular group text, it’s called “The Village” and it’s comprised of a new group of women who all live within 100 yards of my front door in St Pete. They never cease to amaze me with their ability to show up - with no stress or strain, much like Mary Poppins’ snap of a finger. This isn’t a coincidence. Women actually do this in response to stress. It’s a phenomenon called “Tend and Befriend.” It was discovered nearly 70 years after the term “fight or flight” was coined. Why? Because female animals were not included in the original study🙄. Biologically, it makes sense, fighting or fleeing isn’t really an option with multiple littles. Maybe this is why women, Mommas, maternal figures in our lives play SUCH an important role… because they innately “turn toward” community when things are hard. They see us, support us and make us feel oh-so-safe. They are a big part of the reason we are able to thrive. This is one reason that our blends are “women.” To be witnessed by maternal figures is to unlock your magic… and in the month of May here in the USA, we bow to them (although we should every day of every week or every month). 📞 Cutting the umbilical cord prematurely is like slamming the phone down on a delicate and profound conversation with Mother Nature. 💎 Those final moments when a baby is Earthside but muma and baby are still connected by the placenta are some of the most precious of their lives. 💔 Breaking that connection before both have had a chance to exchange their final ‘words’ is not something we would do to a friend we're speaking to on the phone… and this is one of the most important conversations of our baby's life. ♾️ The mother’s placenta is still so closely communicating with the baby’s body that it will continue to send oxygenated blood to baby via the cord if they’re not thriving in the earliest stages of baby arriving Earthside. And baby can release what’s no longer needed, now she’s started using her lungs. 👣 When you 'wait for white' (when all the baby's blood has been returned to the baby from the placenta) before cutting the cord, if you’re going to cut it at all, you enable that final conversation to finish. Gli antidepressivi sono progettati per stimolare la produzione di serotonina, ma oggi sappiamo anche che i livelli di serotonina aumentano in ogni persona quando questa riceve un atto di gentilezza da un’altra persona. Pensate, solo perché una persona riceve una gentilezza, i suoi livelli di serotonina aumentano. Questo succede al destinatario e anche a colui che compie l’atto di gentilezza: i suoi livelli di serotonina aumentano nella stessa misura del ricevitore. Olá pessoal!!!! Hoje vamos para o último capítulo dos nossos posts sobre Fases do Trabalho de Parto. No capítulo 7 iremos falar sobre a Dequitação, ou nascimento da Placenta. Placenta é um órgão fabricado no início da gestação responsável pela nutrição e oxigenação do bebê enquanto está no útero materno. A comunicação entre a face materna e a face fetal da placenta ocorre atravéz do cordão umbilical, não existindo contato do sangue materno com o do bebê, belezas da natureza que somente ela sabe fazer!!!!! “Losing yourself” in pregnancy or post partum is not something to be feared, this is inherently necessary in order for you to emerge as this new human for your child and yourself. Meeting this new version of yourself post birth is sacred. The initiation from maiden to mother is massive and complex and when we reclaim childbirth as a right of passage, it reminds us that childbirth is powerful, profound and life changing. How can we not emerge from that newly changed ? As your doula, I will hold you in that change, remind you that you’re perfect in all that you are, the exhaustion, the sore breasts and the tears.
