It's Mother's Day week, so it's a good time to reminisce on some birth stories. Mom was a 2nd time mom and ready to have her baby. She got to the hospital got settled and was doing squats, walking lunges you name it! You know I was excited. She labored like a champ unmedicated then made an empowered decision to get some rest via the epidural. 2 hours later it was time to push. In comes her doctor and she queues her hubby for a specific playlist. He starts playing SOCA....ma'am do you know where I am going in a few weeks? (this was pre-Trinidad trip). They had her whole hospital room jamming and had the doctor asking "what kind of music is this"? Me in my mind..THE BEST KIND... yes I know I'm totally biased lol...idc. Mom did amazing and meet her son after a short pushing session. Welcome to the mommy deuce ✌🏾 club. Thank you for inviting me to your birth team. You did and are amazing. Happy early Mother's Day! Fun Fact: My client's doc was actually the doctor I had for a few months before switiching to midwifery care. He didn't do anything wrong (maybe except having very man sized hands, lol 🥴🙈 iykyk) I just knew in my heart I wanted a different kind of care. I am currently completing my Birth Doula Training through Childbirth International. . https://childbirthinternational.com/about-childbirth-international/accreditation/ . My plan is to be finished with my certification by July 2024. However, since Washington State does not require a Doula to be certified to work and my certification requires that I attend multiple births I am taking on clients. . . Long term goals include a Post Partum Doula Certification, a Lactation Specialist Certification and a CPR/First Aid/AED instructor certification (so I can certify my clients if they wish) . . While often seen as a gentle nudge rather than a full-on intervention, sweeps are a proactive method to encourage labour to start. ⏱️ 🗂️ Membrane sweeps have become routine. So much so that they are often expected as a standard procedure. But they are indeed a form of induction with a different name. Being such a critical intervention, you must be well-informed and take the time to think it through before giving your consent. Actually...Let's think about it for a minute... In the case of a healthy pregnancy with no medical condition justifying speed-up labour and birth: - A sweep might work if your body is almost ready for labour. But if labour was imminent anyway, why have a sweep? - Conversely, if your body isn’t gearing up for labour, a sweep will probably not work. And the whole process will most likely be uncomfortable, if not painful. This is because the cervix may still be firm, positioned at the back of the vagina and closed, without the baby's head pressing down on the cervix to release the hormones needed for birth. I spent a couple hours at the beach this week (came away with a wicked sunburn), and was reminded that there's nothing like the ocean to make you feel that sense of belonging to something bigger than yourself. ⁣ ⁣ I believe in the interconnectedness of everything, but sometimes I get so wrapped up in the nitty-gritty, the day-to-day, that I forget. I need to take a day now and then to be reminded - there's more to daily life than checking off the boxes on my to-do list. ⁣ ⁣ I think that's why a mindfulness practice is so important. It can bring that sense of interconnectedness even when we don't have time to go sit by the sea and get lost in thought. Self care for small business owners 💕👆💕 As BIRTH WORKERS we are often spending our time focusing on the needs of our clients and thinking about how they are feeling. Birth work can be heavy and running your own business comes with it's own worries and stresses. Which is why looking after YOU is soooo important. This I want I have been doing lately to take care of myself: 1. Lighting my fave candle in the evening and relaxing (I really like the Aldi ones 👍) 2. Exercise....I don't like it, but it makes me feel good. I used to go spinning a lot before kids so I have taken it up again recently and it does give me a buzz (as well as making me feel excruciating pain!) 3. I have started to use @glaize.co nails because I love having colourful nails but absolutely hate getting my nails done as it costs too much and takes too long! These stick on bad boys hide my hideously short nails and make me look (a little) presentable! 🤣 4. My previous boss bought me a @remarkable notepad and I LOVE IT. Obviously, a good old fashioned note pad is perfect too but I use this to write down my ideas and lists that circle my mind constantly and stop me from switching off. 5. I have always been shit with skincare routines but since using @skinandmehq I have seen my skin improving and absolutely love taking my make up off at night. I've also started using a roller ball thing. Not sure if it does anything but I like how it rubs the moisturiser into my skin and feels nice so 🤷 What are your self care routines that help you feel refreshed when running your small birth biz? There's no better oxytocin trigger than dancing with your partner in a twinkle-lit room while calm music plays in the background. This move also allows your partner to help you dance, even when you feel like freezing with each surge. By making small tweaks along the way, you can navigate through many different positions. This will keep you stay in the zone while also using movement to help labor progress. 🫶 After dancing slowly like it's a middle school dance 🤭, add a stool to the mix to turn this into a lunge to the right for 20 minutes, then a lunge to the left for another 20 minutes. Congrats! 🎉 🥳 You've just killed 60 minutes! (Most hospital rooms have small stools for the nurses. Find it! It's a great prop for YOU!) 💗 Introduce a rebozo to your dance routine. Wrap it around your partner's shoulders. When the surge comes, use the rebozo to squat, bend, and sway with the cloth. Your partner's support is crucial as they anchor you during these movements, strengthening your bond and providing emotional support. 💞 Grab that rebozo and drop to a full squat. The rebozo (& your partner) will hold you up and in place. Put the stool behind you with a pillow on it. In between the surges, sit back on the stool. This will keep you in the squatted position but allow you to rest. 🦄 Be creative and MOVE! The options are endless. --------------------------------- Hey! A glimpse at what postpartum support may look like: mom’s bedside table has a basket filled with snacks to choose from. She receives meals in bed and plenty of water and electrolyte refills. This keeps her nourished during nursing sessions and while she heals from birth. Easy access to necessities encourages the new parent to stay in bed and rest! It’s important that they have the least to worry about. A cheap basket can be purchased at the dollar store. Sit down with your partner, family member, friend or doula sometime before your due date and create a preferred postpartum snack list. Purchase them in bulk, bearing in mind that the plan is to stay in bed during your healing journey. Your postpartum support team will be responsible for filling this basket post-birth and replenishing when low. ⬆️ If you’re someone supporting a birthing person in any capacity, offer them this knowledge as an activity or recommendation for postpartum planning!

Y’all, please read the last report from the CDC about our rates of maternal mortality. Here are some things of note: * Rates are slightly lower than the rates in 2020 (817 deaths vs 861). Hope springs eternal that we are heading in the right direction * Huge disparities persists - Black women 49.5 deaths per 100,00 births in 2022 compared to a rate of 19 deaths for White women * Majority of deaths (80%) are preventable STILL!!!
