The liquidity of #maternity in the watery cradle of life 🤰🏼👼🏻🤱🏼 You can be a #mother in infinite ways: adoptive, #midwife, guarantor, of a dog or a cat, of your own elderly parents, mother in children’s communities, or voluntary associations, or hospital wards, in schools, libraries, nests, thermal cradles There are mothers who are fertile in their life projects, even without children, by choice, often labeled selfish, cold or incomplete, as if having children is the only goal of fulfillment within a #woman’s life There are mothers without ever being daughters, or who have gone through pain, care & suffering, just to make their dream come true Today I got ready to celebrate my first “Mother’s Day”🌸 I & the little girl🎀were urgently hospitalized in the room birth at @policlinicomilano Clinic, more than 2 weeks ago, due to an acute peak of high blood pressure (200 - 110) & #preclampsia At the beginning the situation was very critical & the doctors were preparing for the forced #cesarean at the 28th week Now we are well & out of danger, we walk a lot, in the corridors, so much so that the #midwives laugh:”The baby is born already walking”🤣 The Mangiagalli Clinic is a cradle for #mothers & babies As long as I was out, I didn’t take care of my “sweet wait” Every morning, the team is coordinated on the same fluid vibrations of the heart Because #motherhood is liquid, in a cradle of water, which welcomes the #life, like a warm & natural Spa How did you celebrate #MothersDay? #inspatime @e_spansiva

Very late to this but in honour of International Day of the Midwife (which was last week… oops), I wanted to acknowledge the amazing midwives who helped make Stella’s birth the most empowering and beautiful experience of my life (also the most intense and most painful…! 🤪) A surprising number of people have asked if midwives were even present at our homebirth. But it was definitely not a free birth. It was fully supported by the NHS and the wonderful midwives at the Shrewsbury Midwife Led Unit. And due to me reaching the established stage of labour just before a shift change, we had 6 midwives in our home over the course of the evening and prior to that the support of our named community midwife over the phone. They were all brilliant, and along with Tom, helped me when I had wobbles and thought I couldn’t do it. I felt so safe with them and believe that’s one of the reasons my labour went so smoothly. The care in the weeks that followed was also amazing. I can’t thank them all enough. We were also supported in the lead up (and over the phone on the day) by a former midwife turned birth educator @birthnerduk whose course we attended in January. It is no exaggeration to say that Stella’s birth wouldn’t have gone the way it did without Steph. Prior to getting pregnant I actually told Tom I wanted an elective c-section because I was so anxious about giving birth. By the middle of Steph’s course, I felt the opposite and wanted to try and have a home birth!! What a turnaround. There were other factors - I did a colossal amount of research - but Steph’s course really gave me the confidence to go for it! As Tom told her the day after Stella was born, she is one in a million❤️❤️❤️. (Thanks also to @mrs.c.reah for telling me about Steph!) TBH some aspects of caring for pregnant/birthing/postpartum ND folk are actually just providing what should be the baseline of personalised, person centred care. However, there will also be certain needs which will be specific to the ADHD/Autistic community and then within this community needs specific to each individual mother/parent. It is not easy for women/birthing people and their families to speak to professionals on their ND needs, especially at such a vulnerable, important time in their lives. We can worry that we will be dismissed, patronised, judged, flagged as a concern. That we maybe seen as being unable to cope, asking too much. And these concerns are, sadly, not unfounded. Have you heard of The Golden Hour? The Golden Hour refers to a special period of uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact between a birthing parent and newborn for an hour or two after birth. During this period, interruptions are kept to a minimum, including physical exams and measurements. Research shows that The Golden Hour can have significant short- and long-term health benefits for both parent and baby. If both parent and baby are healthy, South Shore Hospital's Birthing Unit Team encourages participation in The Golden Hour and uses a "menu" to allow each patient to customize their Golden Hour experience. In there are medical reasons preventing immediate skin-to-skin contact after birth, a partner or support person can assume this role, with the birthing parent stepping in when they're able. Even if you can't begin skin-to-skin contact right away, both parent and baby will still experience all the benefits once their Golden Hour begins! The birth trauma inquiry recommendations! Posted @withregram • @rosieduffieldmp_official Following the APPG on Birth Trauma’s lengthy inquiry, we are proud to publish our landmark report this morning. The first parliamentary report of it’s kind, the findings are sombre and contribute towards a theme of women not being listened to as they go through their pregnancy journeys. Women know their own bodies better than anyone else, and it is clear a culture change of acknowledging concerns raised and providing reassurance that potential issues will be investigated there and then. Parents gave the inquiry accounts of stillbirth, premature babies and babies with cerebral palsy caused by oxygen deprivation - in many cases trauma caused by mistakes and failures, often covered up, before and during labour. One of the key recommendations the report pushes is a new maternity commissioner who would report directly to the prime minister, along with ensuring safe levels of staffing. We believe that a laser-like focus is required from a qualified individual on this matter. With this report now published, I will continue to monitor the Government and NHS response to these findings and ensure that this issue is not lost amongst others and that women’s voices are listened to and acted upon. #birthtrauma #maternity #women #healthcare

This is pregnancy after loss. This is parenting after loss. This is life after loss. I was packing up the newborn and 0-3 month clothes now that Dòmhnall has outgrown them, and I had a thought. I separated out the newborn clothes I had (or I knew someone had for me!) before either Gus or Dòmhnall were born. Photo 1: newborn size. The vests we got free in the Scottish baby box, one 3 pack of vests, one babygrow and bib set, and the lion set I knew my friend had. This is all I had before Gus was born. Photo 2: 1 three pack of babygrows in 0-3 size, and one rainbow vest. Photo 3: newborn size. The only additions were the babygrow set at the front, a few more gifts from the same friend (from when Gus was born) and more baby box clothing. I see people, fellow infertiles, who go wild with what they buy for their babies before they are born. For me? This was it. I was thoroughly unprepared for Gus in terms of clothing. I didn't want to "tempt fate". There are so many Irish phrases and superstitions, and logically I know that buying something isn't going to have a negative impact on a pregnancy, but emotionally I couldn't do it. I couldn't face the idea that I would have an excess of clothing that if anything went wrong I might need to pack away. With Gus, I was in hospital for 5 days, and our family (grandparents) bought a lot of 0-3 clothing. I don't have an updated picture of that, because of the sheer amount of clothes I had/needed. I wish I could have been more prepared. I wouldn't have had to put the baby blue clothes on the babies, because I would have had clothes I liked. (I really dislike the colours assigned to the genders) Packing them away was hard, it brought back all those nervous emotions, brought back my disappointment in myself for almost being forced to ask grandparents for the early sizes, and them being blue, brought back the pain of packing them away the first time, the nerves pulling them out again, and all the pain of "is it going to happen?" questioning if we will use them again, if we will plan to try. One thing is for sure, if I do have a next time, I'm going to buy something that I love for baby while pregnant.

It just can’t be working for us when surgical births happen at six times the rate that they once did. Yes, the system saves mothers’ and babies’ lives. That’s its job when the job is needed. But it complicates far too many normal, healthy births resulting in the system needing to save them from the complications it caused in the first place. This is the harsh reality of childbirth in much of the industrialized world as evidenced by increasing cesarean sections, increased inductions, increased NICU stays for babies, and increased birth trauma for mothers. Birth centers and midwifery practices are closing. Why? Physiologic birth doesn’t pay and it’s not convenient for providers or the system, but 39-week inductions are. Sadly, it’s less about what’s good for you and more about what works best for them. Hear everyone. New moms Tricia and Megan Porter share their experience having their son Chase under our care: "My wife and I chose Cooley Dickinson for the birth of our first child for many reasons. First, was its LGBTQ awareness and inclusivity. Second, was its overall reputation and the positive experiences a number of our close friends. We opted to have our care provided by the midwives in the practice and experienced prenatal, labor, and birthing care that was beyond what we could have hoped for. After struggling for years with infertility, fighting hard and advocating for ourselves constantly, we found that Cooley was the antithesis to our prior experience. We felt seen, understood, validated and safe every step of the way. From our informative and connecting prenatal group, to each of our prenatal appointments, right through labor and birth, and into our postpartum period their staff always treated us with the upmost care, respect, and patience. What struck us most was the midwives and nurses' ability to be patient and present in order to witness what was happening for us, so they could provide appropriate and effective interventions as needed. I was induced 11 days past my due date. My labor journey was long and winding, but the nurses and midwives were incredibly skilled and patient in getting me to my goal of a vaginal birth. I imagine other practices would’ve pushed me into a c-section as it had been over 24 hours that my water had broken. However, my birthing team (our doula, the nurses, the midwives, and my wife) were an AMAZING team. They all worked so seamlessly together, bringing different strengths to the table. I am so incredibly grateful to every one of them and the environment they created in order for me to have such a positive and transformational birthing experience. There are no other people we would have wanted to help us bring our son into the world with. We feel so lucky we chose Cooley Dickinson Hospital. We bow down to them as they do this most important work of shepherding new life out onto the planet with such skill, kindness, and grace."
