There has been a lot of talk about Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) over the last several years. Exposure to ACEs impact every aspect of a child’s life. They have been linked to higher rates of developmental delays, behavioral challenges, and learning difficulties. Screening for ACEs has been adopted by many primary care offices to identify the needs of children and their families. How do we support these families with this knowledge? By giving them the tools to understand their child and to help them build a positive relationship. That is what will make the biggest difference in that child’s life. Grayson was twenty-two months old when his parents noticed unusual bruising. His mom and dad took him to the #pediatrician, thinking that he might be anemic. His doctor immediately ordered blood work and sent the family to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center, where he received the diagnosis that it was b-cell acute lymphoblastic #leukemia. While the news was hard to process, the care at @northernlighthealth helped Grayson ring the bell to celebrate reaching remission. At two and a half years old, Grayson never complained about any of his procedures, which included bloodwork, transfusions, #chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and lumbar punctures. His parents say that he actually looked forward to going to the clinic. His mom says that “the staff were incredible and like a second family.” The clinic where Grayson received care was funded fully by community support and dollars raised through @cmnhospitals. Elliot was born one day before her due date. A few hours after she was born, her body temperature wasn’t rising, so her pediatrician recommended putting her in the warmer overnight. When her temperature was still low the next morning, lab results revealed that her white blood cell band was off the charts. This meant that a severe infection was happening in her bloodstream, so the doctors started her on IV antibiotics through her belly button, since there was a high chance of Elliot not surviving this infection without them. She was transferred to @northernlighthealth’s level III neonatal intensive care unit, where she received antibiotic treatment for sepsis for five days until her bloodwork confirmed safe levels. During this time, Elliot saw specialists, including an #oncologist to see if her diagnosis was in any way related to her older brother’s leukemia diagnosis. Thankfully, after five scary days, Elliot received a clean bill of health and was discharged to go home and meet her family. Two and a half years later, Elliot’s family celebrates her #resilience and having their strong, healthy, happy girl at home. #Donations to @cmnhospitals funded the opening of a state-of-the-art level III neonatal intensive care unit, where Elliot received life-saving care.
