Well, it’s day 5 since Byron was abruptly and permanently excluded from school and nothing has been put in place for him to have an education. His school got rid of him before getting his EHCP in place and rather than admit they could no longer cope or cater for his needs they decided to make him out to be naughty and dangerous. A nine year old boy with complex needs who has not changed in the 5 years at the school other than getting taller. He has been treated worse than an animal in recent weeks because they clearly decided they wanted him out. 16 years I have taken my children to the school and all I got was a phone call to tell me he was excluded. No compassion, no respect and no kindness. Even in 2024 there is a huge lack of understanding over autism and the complexities that come with it. His school had years to get him the right support and yet they delayed and failed him in every way. The treatment he has received lately is nothing short of abuse due to their lack of training and lack of care. He has bled and been traumatised by their negligence. MORE NEEDS TO BE DONE. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) prevalence has increased to impact 1:36 people (2.78%) with high rates of co-occurring behavioral health challenges, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, or depression (77.7%; 1, 2). Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (EDS/HSD) are genetic disorders that affect connective tissue matrix proteins and often co-occur with ASD and ADHD (3). Connective tissue disorders affect collagen and elastin and contribute to many physical and behavioral health symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, gastrointestinal problems, sleep challenges, fatigue, vertigo, tinnitus, or pain (3). Understanding the overlapping symptoms of autism, ADHD, and co-occurring symptoms of EDS/HSD, how to evaluate, give conservative care, and utilize medications or supplements as appropriate may help increase the quality of life and achievement of life goals with pediatric patients and their families.' Do you want to put your kids in the best position to be successful with the things you ask of them? Oftentimes that means considering and addressing the setting events that may be in play. ✨Setting events are factors or circumstances that could have happened some time ago that could be currently affecting and influencing your child's behavior. 🧠 The reality of having Borderline Personality Disorder is I have multiple symptoms which change hourly. I can become very overstimulated and want to hide away from the world in an instant, even if I’ve made plans. I’m struggling at the moment and it’s the most difficult thing to explain to others as you’d love company from others but then want them to go home, go somewhere but want to go home immediately. I’m finding it hard to come to terms with how my brain is coping with things and I’m pretty tired. It’s mental health awareness month so I’ve tried to share some awareness of this condition with the hope friends and family can understand things better. It can be super difficult to know if your child is regulated! “Why are they moving so much??” “Why won’t they sit still??” “Why are they making these sounds??” 🤷🏽♀️ We have these preconceived ideas of what ‘calm’ looks like. 😌 This may be UNCOMFORTABLE for an autistic child. Calm is not the goal- self regulation is. This may look like your child 👉knowing their sensory preferences and aversions, 👉knowing which sensory input they need to be in ‘control’ of their sensory cup, 👉knowing coping strategies to implement after they have had a meltdown, 👉knowing the best way they are able to focus and concentrate, 👉knowing how to come down from those intense emotions etc. If you think about people screaming at a sports match, you don’t think they are dysregulated right? Because the energy matches the environment. 💥 Next time you wonder if your child is regulated ask your self these questions: 💓 do they feel safe? 💓 can they focus? 💓 can they communicate their needs functionally? 💓 can they participate in activities they find beneficial? 💓 can they attend and concentrate? 💓 are their sensory needs being met? If these answers are yes then your child most likely is regulated! Can we talk about the recent loooong #Bridgerton threads I'm seeing on FB about Francesca & her crush (can't remember his name) being autistic? Let me preface this by saying, I myself watched and thought they could be if the author had intended that, and in my head this was a nice way to view their interactions because I felt like I could relate / feel included. Their comfortable silence, hyper focused interests, blunt words and dislike of noise and crowds all resonated with me. BUT. I also think talking about these thoughts on public pages where loads of viewers won't have a clue about autism and its sometimes complex presentations, isn't a good idea and can harm the public perspectives on autism. That's something the community has worked so hard to address, and unfortunately, simplifying autism to the few short scenes between Francesca and her man, honestly it's like 10 mins of screen time tops, is very invalidating for the community as a whole. My worry is it will make it easier to bandy about the A word for simply shy and reserved individuals who may not have any other issues at all, and that would very much not be positive for the public to understand the very real struggles of real autistic people and their carers and families. Of course many shy people are autistic too but assuming these characters are, based on what we see of them, is a MASSIVE oversimplification and we don't want the media to latch on to bashing SEND families even more, saying they don't need that much support cos it's not so hard.... So, two things can be true at the same time. I relate and like these 2 characters, and like to imagine they're autistic... It quickly became stage 4 metastatic and spread throughout my ribs, hips, spine, and skull. I was scared, angry, overwhelmed, exhausted, and in constant pain. I was doing all I could for my family until l had nothing left to give. I did not know how to do self-care at all. I had to learn how to care for myself to be able to care for my family! I learned to do small but consistent self-care that recharges me to keep going as a parent. A graduate of Queen Mary University of London, with a year studying practical filmmaking at the University of Texas at Austin, she has directed several short films and co-directed THE STIMMING POOL, a hybrid documentary feature that captures the world through an autistic lens. Beyond filmmaking, Georgia is an occasional writer and a co-host of the Autism Through Cinema Podcast.
