From being called “oversensitive” to “unempathic”, it’s not unusual for Autistic individuals to be told that – whatever we’re feeling – it is the wrong emotion! In this informative guest blog from Autistic consultant and trainer, Loren Snow, they delve into the emotional experiences of Autistic individuals, highlighting how our 🔶 unique processing speeds; 🔶 sensory sensitivities; 🔶 interoception; 🔶 nociception; 🔶 proprioception; and 🔶 increased rates of alexithymia and burnout, can interplay with emotional regulation and behaviour. They offer 6 ways in which non-autistic allies can do their part to bridge the ‘double empathy’ divide and support the emotional expression of their Autistic loved ones. Read it here: https://reframingautism.org.au/autism-and-emotions-how-and-why-do-autistic-people-process-emotions-differently/ #AskingAutistics what would you like allies to know about how you experience emotions and how they can best support you? #ActuallyAutistic #AutisticEmotions #alexithymia #nociception #SensoryProcessing #interoception #SensorySensitivities #DoubleEmpathyProblem #burnout #EmotionalRegulation #LorenSnow [ID: An orange background featuring the Reframing Autism logo at the top and rainbow logo knotwork at the bottom left. EmotionVerse.. Feeling Stuck? How to Express Your Feelings? You might feel your heart racing as you try to figure out what to say. Maybe a part of you wants to open up, but another part just isn't so sure. Maybe you're not even sure how you feel. 🙂Social norms In some families and cultures, it can feel like being your authentic self is risky or even discouraged. lf most people around you put up facades of "having it all together," sharing raw, real, or uncomfortable thoughts and feelings might not feel safe or appropriate. If you find it difficult to open up, consider whether you're grappling with social norms that make it harder to share. 🙂Personality You likely know someone who can talk with absolutely anyone they meet. These highly social people may be more willing to open up about their feelings because they're just naturally more comfortable in situations that require disclosing personal information. On the other hand, if you're naturally more reserved (aka introverted), it might be more difficult to express emotions- even to someone you're close to. Stay Tuned for the solution. #worstfeeling #feeling #feelings #depression #alexithymia #hurt #pain #stuck #depressed #shatoks #expressyourfeelings #express #mentalhealth #mentalhealthtips

Expanding on the last post. This particular bouquet of behaviours is possibly an interesting mix of Autism and Dyspraxia with a pinch of OCD thrown in (or just ASD). Often results into momentary confusion but also haunting to be the subject of rumination later 😅😅. Tips? Be easy on yourself. Use maps and.. it's okay to be this way. If you struggle with driving or playing 🎸, practice (or use public transport if available). It helps to go "oh this is the hand I right with so it's left or right. Sometimes when working out when I do something with my left, the instructors go, 'the other left' instead of right. Common phrases used to provide ‘encouragement’ and ‘reassurance’ to autistic folk - ‘you’re ok’, ‘you’ll be fine’, ‘it’ll get easier’ etc. No it won’t, so please stop with this toxic positivity! No amount of exposure will make doing certain tasks easier for autistic people. Our ability to manage difficult situations fluctuates depending on how much capacity (time and energy) we have, but this doesn’t mean it’s easy or it’s going to get easier with time, regardless of how well we appear to do those things. Rather than using the above statements which can be invalidating and untrue, try asking us how you can help make things easier or lighten our load. Nurturing and maintaining a healthy balance increases our capacity to engage in tasks that we may otherwise find too overwhelming to do. Alexithymia is a term that refers to difficulty identifying and expressing one's own emotions. People with alexithymia may struggle to recognize emotions within themselves and others, as well as to describe them verbally. This can hinder interpersonal relationships and emotional communication. The exact cause of alexithymia is not clear, but it is believed to be related to genetic, neurological, and environmental factors. Treatment typically involves therapy to help the individual identify and understand their emotions. The Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) is one of the most widely used self-report measures for assessing alexithymia. The TAS-20 consists of 20 items that assess three main components of alexithymia: -Difficulty identifying feelings within themselves -Difficulty describing feelings to others -Externally oriented thinking: this component evaluates the tendency of individuals to focus their attention externally rather than internally on their emotions. #alexithymia #mentalhealthawarenessmonth #mentalhealth #emotions #salutementale #salutementaleitalia #psychiatricnurse #nursing

Guys I keep letting you down, I am sorry. #adhd strikes again. I am posting this again as there was a typo in the Alexithymia box - I meant to say inability but accidently said ability. Thank you to the lovely soul that pointed it out to me. ❤️ I have deleted the old post, apologies if you commented on it. --- If you'd like to know more about Alexithymia and Interoception I have a new blog on my website. The link is in my bio. 💫 Image reads: Interoception - ability to sense and interpret internal body signals Alexithymia - ability to recognise, identify and describe feelings Feeling and noticing internal sensations inside our body can provide valuable clues to an emotional experience. Autistic and ADHD folk may experience challenges with interoception and alexithymia. This can impact eating behaviours, relationship with food and body. Both interoception and alexithymia need to be taken into consideration when supporting Autistic and ADHD folk in the Nutrition and Dietetics space, and treatment should be adapted in neurodiversity-affirming ways. 💜🧡 Your ND affirming Clinical Nutritionist and ND advocate. #interoception #alexithymia #melbournenutritionist #autism #eatingdisorderawareness

Feelings that are hard to describe - the shaky, sick feeling that comes when you're repeatedly on the receiving end of judgements with a bitter undercurrent of scorn and resentment 🌿 . . While we've had so many generous offers and actions of help as we move house after twelve years, there's definitely been a few uncomfortable pockets. Thankfully they've been few and far between. And I've managed to respond to those thinly veiled barbs by pausing and saying 'thanks for sharing your feedback and observations'. It's pretty hard to keep arguing with someone who consistently refuses to argue back . . Sending love and solidarity to anyone out there dealing with people you find difficult. If you're like Wood, there's probably always going to be Metal types trying to chop you down. I guess the answer lies in the etymology of the word 'radical' - meaning 'from the roots'. Others may try and chop you down or cut you up, but remember your roots. Nurture their depth and strength and patient growth and perseverance. Stay radical. And pick your battles . . N+131 . . #Bookreview: This was a fast read and a simple read. Following the life of the narrator-protagonist who suffers from a medical condition which limits his feelings, including feeling of fear, the narrator traverses through some tough situations in a society that is not always kind. But the presence of even a bare few can make it better and survivable and ever more than just that. Its written in a simple manner and manages to convey, like the narrator is himself, in simple words the whole story which spans some 250 odd pages. I recommend it to parents and to also young adults. We understand what you go through in this journey of growing up and its difficult for all, as it was for us. .   . . #newbook #almond #almondanovel #wonpyungsohn #translated #korea #goodread #alexithymia #friendship #struggle #simplelives #friends #violence #triggers #braincondition

As this year's Autism awareness and acceptance month comes to an end, I wanted to list some less-common (and lesser mentioned) traits that I've read about here and there. These have affected me all my life. I do understand them better now and experience some of them differently now than I did as a child. I'm yet to accept them completely as an intrinsic part of me and what I am but it is what it is. It goes without saying that not every autistic person will have these and might even have the opposite traits. I hope to write about these in more detail in my next posts. . . . . . . . . . . . . #autismawarenessmonth #alexithymia #dyspraxia . #autismawareness #autismacceptance #autismacceptancemonth #adultingaspie #actuallyautistic . #latediagnosedautistic #invisibledisability #autisticindian #aspergers #aspergersawareness #aspiewoman #actuallyautisticadult #neurodivergent #neurodiversity #autismspectrumdisorder #letstalkaboutmentalhealth #autisticwoman #mentalhealthawareness #autisticpride #girlshaveautismtoo #aspergerslife #autisticselfadvocacy #aspergerssyndrome #livingwithautism #marginalised #motorcoordination

There are multiple issues I experience stemming from emotional dysregulation, which is why I seem to be talking about it quite a lot in recent posts. One way this has manifested for me is through what I call the ‘autopilot effect’. This is about not being present or living in the moment. It’s experienced as a mechanical or robotic experience, void of connection or feeling. Existing but not really living. Can anyone else relate to this? If so, how can we try and remain present as autists after being in autopilot most of our lives? #southasianautismawareness #southasianwoman #autism #autismawareness #autismacceptance #autismspectrum #endableism #autisticmom #neurodivergent #neurodiversity #neurodiversityacceptance #neurodiversityaffirming #neurodiversityawareness #neurodiverse #neurodiversewomen #destigmatizeautism #educate #empathy #community #destigmatize #autisticburnout #selfawareness #monotropism #selfcare #masking #unmasking #alexithymia #impostersyndrome

Let’s talk hands and arms. It’s not usually an issue, but the moment you put me in a social situation, I suddenly lose all sense of what to do with them. It’s like watching a fish out of water! Do they go by my side, on my lap, clasped together or doing something else? And should the fingers be open or clenched? Probably the most natural thing in the world seems like the most difficult thing to navigate at that point. It’s as if I’ve only just discovered I have hands and arms attached to my body!
