Beneath the Devil Tree is a fictional recounting of the events that happened in 1921. Though the novel contains references to several real people and incidents, it focuses on its fictional characters to narrate the plot. It is devised as being told by 'The Outcaste', a writer and activist who also happens to be a major participant in the events. The novel begins in January 1921, during a Vettekkaran Pattu performance in Nilambur Kovilakam. We find the Matriarch sensing something catastrophic brewing in the air and remembering the betrayal of a testament made with the deity in the past. We are in for a tumultuous journey, along with a motley bunch of characters with varied motives, temperaments, and mindsets, only to end exactly one year later, in the next Vettakkaran Pattu, with the survivors whose lives have been transformed permanently after a first-hand experience of human violence and cruelty. This novel's biggest assets are its characters. Except for a few who amble on the sidelines, each one of the characters in the novel stands out among others. Each of them possesses individuality and a unique character arc that dovetails with the overall narrative. This is very difficult to achieve in a historical novel because the writer already has a ready-made framework of historical facts that cannot be transcended. The characters, their motives, actions, and the incidents that they lead onto—everything has to be confined within this framework to make the novel work. L'ERRORE CHE HO FATTO GUARDANDO "BABY REINDEER" Come ho scritto ieri sera, la serie Netflix "Baby Reindeer" ha avuto un enorme successo ed è strameritato, tutto grazie allo sceneggiatore e attore protagonista Richard Gadd, a cui rinnovo i complimenti. Una serie del genere crea diverse emozioni e guardandola, mi sono accorto di aver fatto un errore abbastanza grave: victimblaming. Dicesi "victimblaming" la colpevolizzazione della vittima, ma in un caso di stalking e/o violenza sessuale è il carnefice l'unico colpevole, senza alcuna esitazione, senza ombra di dubbio. Tuttavia, non essendo coinvolto in prima persona e potendo ragionare con lucidità, ho pensato:"Perché la insegue a casa, quando gli sta rovinando la vita?", "Come mai prova compassione per lei?", "Potrebbe chiudere definitivamente, ma non lo fa...", "Perché è andato a trovare il suo violentatore?". Victimblaming, per l'appunto. Sono domande che creano disagio, se poste realmente. Prendo l'esempio del poliziotto che chiede:"E perché non ha denunciato prima?". Come se il tempo passato diminuisse la gravità di una violenza.
