Often, the most profound lies within such incredible simplicity. When sharing functional breathing techniques with clients, friends, family or even strangers (those beautiful & unexpected conversations that can arise), common feedback that is offered around breathing practices is the notable/profound shifts & changes that occur from the simplest practices. In the last post, I spoke on breath awareness & how that can shift our perception & experience of reality. For example, by regularly checking in with breath & coming to the realisation that we can impact our physiology & nurture our nervous system AT ANY TIME can be very liberating & empowering for many. Then, with a simple practice such as this nasal breathing & humming, again we do just that. We check in with Self, cultivate Self relation & Self awareness, we impact our physiology in the most beautiful way & we nurture our nervous system, the state of which is ultimately how we perceive the world around (and within) us. We can do this practice literally anywhere. While driving, while at the grocery store, while cleaning, while mowing the lawn, while on the tools and/or working, while caring for kids or others and so on. It’s one that I implement multiple times daily. My husband & son do so now too. ❤️ All breathing practices hold SO much benefit. When we may come to understand the biochemical, biomechanical & psychophysiological aspects of any breathing practice, those fundamentals are absolutely game changing. The brilliant book, Breath by James Nestor is a fantastic place to start (that’s what kicked off my journey with the power of breath 5 years ago!) 😮‍💨💛🙏🏽⭕️

✨Menopause is associated with hormonal, neurochemical and structural changes in the brain, which can influence mood, cognition and overall brain health. 🧠 But symptoms aren't every woman's destiny, and can be significantly improved naturally🌿 🌼 Menopause is associated with increased systemic inflammation and alterations in immune function. Neuroinflammation in the brain may contribute to neuronal damage, synaptic dysfunction, and cognitive impairment 🌼 Menopause can influence levels of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine, which play roles in mood, cognition, and emotional well-being. Fluctuations can contribute to mood swings, anxiety, depression, and cognitive changes 🌼 Oestrogen receptors exist in various regions of the brain, including those involved in mood regulation, memory and cognition. Declining levels can affect plasticity and neuron survival, potentially contributing to cognitive changes and mood disturbances 🌼 Menopause can impact the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the stress response system. Changes in cortisol levels, a stress hormone, and this axis may influence mood regulation, stress resilience, and cognitive function 🌼 Oestrogen plays a role in neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to adapt and reorganise in response to experience. ⚡️Increased vagal tone is associated with greater resilience because of its role in regulating the body’s stress response and promoting relaxation. ✨The vagus nerve plays a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis in the body. ✨Here’s how increased vagal tone contributes to resilience: 1️⃣ Stress Response Regulation: The vagus nerve helps regulate the stress response inhibiting release of hormones such as cortisol & adrenaline. When vagal tone is high, the body is better able to activate the parasympathetic nervous system (rest/digest/heal) & counter the effects of the sympathetic nervous system (fight/flight). 2️⃣Heart Rate Variability (HRV): Vagal tone influences HRV positively. Increased vagal tone & higher HRV lead to flexible and adaptive response to stressors. 3️⃣Emotional Regulation: The vagus nerve plays a role in emotional regulation. I have just completed a seven day myofascial energetic release training with the very wonderful @nisarga8 The training has deeply reconnected me to my bodywork roots but in a whole new way. It also inevitably enhances awareness of trauma in the body, and how to work with it safely. When you see how much is held, you realise that there is great responsibility in this work. To be in a room surrounded by so many of the students that were trained by @sevendirectionsbreathwork and @integrative_breath (slide 2) was utterly heart warming for me. I genuinely love this bunch of amazing humans and how much they continue to show up for the work. In addition to our graduates there were a whole load of brand-new connections and contacts I made from other areas of professional breathwork, friends and peers in other somatic practices and people that I’ve admired and respected from afar - all of us now in the same room, all of us willing to be courageous, vulnerable and honest! I know that every single one of us will be changed in the depth of our breathwork practice through this wonderful training. Nisarga, thank you for being such a clean and ethical vessel of teaching. Knowledge is power. Learning about potential causes of your symptoms is empowering and can change the course of your healing journey. The vagal brake is the part of your vagus nerve that connects your brain to your heart 💚 The ventral vagal system where we feel safe, calm, and connected, functions as a brake over the sympathetic mobilize, fight/flight response. When the vagal brake is applied, we get more ventral vagal energy. When the vagal brake releases, we get more sympathetic energy. (Pinna & Edwards, 2020, p. 4) Unfortunately, when we have face trauma, overwhelming situations, or chronic pain/illness, our vagal brake does not function properly. So, when we face a challenge, the vagal brake fully releases and we go into a high fight/flight response. We then have difficulty applying the brake and shifting back to a ventral vagal state. By developing higher vagal tone, we increase our ability to apply the vagal brake and shift back to the ventral vagal system with more ease. Adjusting Mum on Mother’s Day! Hope those Mothers out there had a wonderful day! I got to spend the day down the family farm with Mum (& Dad) and one of my brothers today. The sun ☀️ was shining and we shared a meal. Mum’s (Nonna) is Italian 🇮🇹 and what she hinted at earlier this week, l prepared for lunch. (Not sure how thrilled Nonno was with the main dish). I made a delicious meat pie (pastry only on top!) and a home baked sponge with cream and strawberry jam. Not very Italian l know, but it’s what made her smile! In this very interesting study, the impact of hormones on smell preference and modulation of the nervous system was tested in 18 Japanese women. The results indicated that hormonal fluctuations altered preference for essential oils and the essential oils the women preferred had a beneficial effect on the nervous system (better parasympathetic tone) and cerebral blood flow. Women in late luteal phase (3-5 pre-menstruation) appeared to prefer lemongrass and dislike pine sylvestre, whereas those with milder symptoms in the late luteal phase preferred lavender vera and disliked lemongrass. This demonstrates that hormones impact preference and this impacts the nervous system. Abstract Methods: An observational study integrating aromatherapy with slow-paced breathing was conducted. Eighteen women (aged 20–22 years) without olfactory impairments were categorized into two groups: those with strong symptoms perceived in the late luteal phase (n = 10) and those with mild symptoms (n = 8). The study assessed responses during the early follicular and late luteal phases and recorded preferences for the following four essential oils: pine sylvestre (Pinus sylvestris), geranium bourbon (Pelargonium X asperum), lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus), and lavender vera (Lavandula angustifolia). The autonomic nervous activity and cerebral blood flow were assessed in the early follicular and late luteal phases using the essential oils most and least preferred by each participant. Results: ... Changes in ANS activity, marked by an increase in sympathetic function and a decrease in parasympathetic function during the sniffing exercise, persisted regardless of the menstrual cycle stage or essential oil preference. If the answer to these 3 questions is YES, then your nervous system is currently regulated and in ventral state (social engagement). If you’ve answered no to 1 or more of these questions, your nervous system might be dysregulated, and in sympathetic (fight or flight), or dorsal state (shut down). You will spend more time in ventral, as you increase you capacity to move through all 3 nervous system states when dysregulation happens. ✨ 🦶🏼 Check-in with your body: How can I feel safer?
