I said I would never do this... but it's too important not to. If you've been following me for a while, you know how much I love speaking and facilitating. I enjoy helping leaders and teams become stronger, more productive, and communicate better. But I've always said I NEVER wanted to host an event. However... several weeks ago, inspiration struck. I was on a call with Duane Tinker of Dental Compliance Specialists, LLC and he was talking about his time as a detective. We discussed what's happened in dentistry lately - disgruntled patients coming into practices, becoming aggressive, and ending with disastrous, sometimes fatal results. I suggested to Duane that he could use his background and training to present a course on workplace violence prevention. He could call it the "safer and stronger" course and help teams better protect themselves from aggressive patients, employees, or even domestic situations. He loved the idea, then asked, "Well... what will you teach?" I instantly knew the answer. I've been facilitating workshops for leaders on topics like productive conflict, building vulnerability-based trust, and transforming your team from dysfunction to cohesion for a while now. Those are all skills that fit perfectly with the idea of making your team safer and stronger. When you have a team that communicates respectfully with each other, knows how to adapt to different communication styles, and can rely on other members of the team, you automatically have a team that's going to be stronger. From there, the idea of Safer & Stronger Learning Lab was born! The more Duane and I talked about it, the better it became. Dysregulated nervous systems can significantly impact our ability to respond effectively to stressors. When our nervous system is dysregulated, we may experience heightened states of arousal or intense emotional reactions, leading to inappropriate responses to stress. Healing the central nervous system (CNS) involves a multifaceted approach that addresses both physiological and psychological factors. The list in the post above is just a start. Other techniques such as mindfulness practices, regulated breathing exercises, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, and seeking support from mental health professionals can all contribute to regulating the CNS and promoting healthier responses to stressors over time.
