〰The way we perceive and interpret the world is different following trauma. Our nervous system adapts to the ongoing perception of threat, to gain a felt sense of control. When we detect a threat in our internal or external environment, it triggers physical responses preprogrammed to ensure our survival, originating from the oldest parts of our brain. This prepares our body to fight, flee, run, hide, freeze, or undertake other actions to ensure our survival. When this occurs, it partially suppresses our thinking brain, our higher consciousness. If the fight, flight, freeze response is successful in maintaining our safety and move away from the threat, we can then return to a state of balance and equilibrium, where our survival response has than been able to reach a sense of completion. If, for some reason, our survival response has been thwarted or blocked, we continue to release stress hormones, and our brain adapts to the ongoing perception of threat. During sleep, our bodies undergo various restorative processes that are crucial for emotional regulation, cognitive function, and overall well-being. Lack of sleep can exacerbate symptoms of anxiety, depression or other mental health issues commonly associated with trauma. When we prioritize sleep, we give our brain the chance to process and integrate traumatic memories in healthier ways. Sleep helps in consolidating memories, which is essential for emotional processing and learning. Good sleep hygiene can significantly improve mood stability, increase energy levels, and enhance resilience against daily stressors. To improve your sleep, consider establishing a calming bedtime routine that may include activities such as reading,  light stretching or listening to soothing music. Members of the armed forces are over-represented when it comes to suicide and self-harm. The latest government inquiry into Defence and Veteran Suicide has revealed damning statistics on the mental health of our modern soldiers. The full findings of this inquiry will be published in the book Breaking The Silence: Stories of Trauma & Tragedy, Hope & Healing, due for publication in June this year. The book draws on almost 3000 lived-experience submissions and hopes to illustrate the scale of the changes that need to be made in leadership, culture, governance and accountability. Here she is y'all!!! This is the Dakota Tote, pattern by Sotak Patterns. It needs a good pressing which I will do tomorrow. Nylon webbing for handles and the shoulder strap is adjustable. This is the perfect size too! Measures 10 inches wide on bottom, 9 inches tall and 4 inches deep. It has two zipper pockets on the inside as well. The shoulder strap can be removed or left on and can be worn as a cross body. Such a versatile tote bag for sure! here are five signs that you may be sabotaging your own healing process: Avoiding Emotions: Avoiding or suppressing emotions rather than acknowledging and processing them. This can lead to stagnation in the healing process and the buildup of emotional tension. Negative Self-Talk: Consistently engaging in negative thoughts about yourself, your abilities, and your prospects for recovery. This can lead to a downward spiral of self-doubt and discouragement. Repeating Destructive Patterns: Repeating destructive behavioral patterns or relationships from the past, such as choosing partners who exhibit similar behavior to past abusers. Self-Isolation: Withdrawing from social interactions and support, leading to isolation and making it harder to seek help or receive support on your healing journey. Undermining Progress: Engaging in behaviors that undermine your progress, such as skipping therapy appointments, not following recommended exercises, or neglecting self-care practices. Identifying these signs can help individuals become aware of self-sabotaging patterns and take steps to break free from them to support their healing journey. 💥When you meet your symptoms with calm and remind yourself of your limbic system’s involvement, you gradually turn off that alarm bell. 💥After perinatal trauma, you may feel unsafe inside your body. 💥All that happened in the past feels alive in the form of gnawing interior discomfort. Many have said, ‘I just don’t feel like myself anymore.’ Your body is constantly bombarded by visceral warning signs, and in an attempt to control these processes, your nervous system may lead you into avoidance or shutdown. Ignoring your gut feelings and numbing out as you learn to hide from yourself. Earlier this week, a few members of our crew participated in the third annual SJJ Law Foundation Giveback Golf Tournament!⛳️ The tournament raised $25,000 for Pawsitivity Service Dogs (@pawsitivityservicedogs), a nonprofit that exists to train service dogs for local veterans suffering from PTSD. Shame is often overlooked and underestimated by mental health practitioners for a number of reasons (many of which I’ve written about in the YTIH Journal, link in bio). Shame is like the root of a weed though; if we don’t dig deep enough to remove the shame, the symptoms will just keep coming back in different forms, or they won’t shift at all. If you’ve been in therapy before but don’t feel any differently or continue to repeat the same patterns, it’s worth exploring whether shame may be lurking under the surface. A good way to tell if shame is present is to ask yourself if there’s any part of yourself, any memory, any preference, or any past experience that you can’t bring yourself to talk about. More telling is if your body contracts when thinking about this topic. Do you feel yourself getting smaller? Wanting to hide and disappear? Or do you freeze altogether? Self-regulation is taught through co-regulation. Those who do not receive enough co-regulation, as a young child, may not develop many self-regulation skills. Instead, they may suppress or react to emotions that make them uncomfortable. The pathways in our brains that tell our bodies and minds what to do with certain emotions, are set in early childhood. The pathways that develop into self-regulation are created through co-regulation. Without enough co-regulation, different pathways are made and self-regulation becomes harder because our brains want to do what we’ve always done… what works.
