Anger, fear, anxiety, sadness, grief.... Not easy experiences in the body when we are not used to feeling and integrating them with our mind and felt sense experience. It’s not really possible to move through emotions that are stuck without actually learning to increase your capacity for feeling them. To move forward and live a life where getting angry doesn’t send us into a freeze response or feeling a way of grief doesn’t shut us down or feeling fear doesn’t create an overwhelming flight response... We need to create space and time to learn to connect to our bodies-where feelings live! Processing, moving, and expressing them helps the energy not get stuck inside our body. In the language of our nervous system - you can increase capacity for emotion to feel them again. So that anger, fear and grief don’t keep you stuck, instead they expand your being. Once we reconnect to our feelings, we will be able to regulate the discomfort in our bodies and, heal. There is no way to completely avoid patriarchal bias at work. I’ve watched women quiet their voices in an attempt to not bother others with their needs and opinions. I’ve watched women adopt the ultra-cold management style modeled to them. I’ve watched women be incredibly assertive. None of these women are exempt from the bias that pervades our culture — there will always be some criticism for you that isn’t levied at your male counterpart for the same behavior. This is even worse for Black, Indigenous, and Hispanic women. For a long time, the prevailing theory was that women don’t speak up for themselves at work. But then, as more women started to negotiate and advocate for themselves, we saw something else — they still were not taken as seriously as the men doing the same thing. In fact, women are likely to be viewed negatively when they are confident in negotiations. It’s exhausting, and there are no perfect answers for how to act to get ahead. What is certain, though, is that corporate culture cannot continue like this. Women (and particularly WOC) are burning out at extreme rates in part because of this feeling that we have to work harder, be more articulate, call more attention to our wins, and be incredibly careful of our communication styles, just to receive less respect and less pay. Lucy Borthwick Counselling -Counselling Practice based in Hagley- Impostor syndrome refers to an internal experience of believing that you are not as competent as others perceive you to be. Imposter feelings represent a conflict between your own self-perception and the way others perceive you. It can affect anyone no matter their social status, work background, skill level, or degree of expertise. While for some people, impostor syndrome can fuel feelings of motivation to achieve, this usually comes at a cost in the form of constant anxiety. You might over-prepare or work much harder than necessary to “make sure” that nobody finds out you are a fraud.This sets up a vicious cycle of thought patterns and behaviours. The problem with impostor syndrome is that the experience of doing well at something does nothing to change your beliefs. Across the board, imposter syndrome is more common when trying something new and feeling pressure to achieve. There are a range of reasons for people experiencing imposter syndrome such as family expectations and the value of success and perfection in childhood. Perfectionism can also lead to imposter syndrome as well as comparison with others which can lead to feeling down or inadequate if you are not achieving the same accomplishments at the same rate as others. Talking to a counsellor can be helpful if you often find yourself feeling like you are a fraud or an imposter. The negative thinking, self-doubt, and self-sabotage that often characterise imposter syndrome can have an effect on many areas of your life. Perfectionism has impacted many areas of my life for as long as I can remember. Training, nutrition, study, work. It has shown up as procrastination, eating disorders, and an ‘all or nothing’ mentality - because if you can’t do it perfectly, why do it at all, right?! 🙄 While I’ve improved in training and work, it still affects my relationship with food. It’s also something I regularly see in clients. I like to remind myself & my clients that “done is better than perfect.” Some days, you just need to show up & tick that box! ✅ ✨ Tips for dealing with perfectionism: • Start small & set realistic goals; • Embrace imperfection & realise mistakes are part of the process; • Celebrate small wins & any progress made; • Seek feedback to avoid your unrelenting standards; • Set time limits to prevent overworking/over-editing; • Finish first, then perfect later! I had a history of minimizing what I needed and what I desired to make things “easy”. As a child I didn’t want to feel like a burden to anyone. When in an environment where the adults around you seem stressed, some kids try to help by being “easy”. I was that kid. That looks like not expressing your needs, stressing yourself out trying to be perfect, suppressing your desires and staying “out the way”. In adulthood that became proclaiming “being just a simple girl”, playing small to avoid being seen as “too much,” not asking for what I wanted, lying to myself about my desires and putting others before me in so many ways. All this… when inside I was bursting at the seams! I actually always wanted a lot!! I have always had big dreams! My needs physical, emotional and financial have always been as vast as everyone else’s. I actually am ‘“Too Much”… I have plenty of personality… I’m extremely expressive…. and I love all of that about me.💕 The turning point for me starting to express my needs and stop being easy was getting Lupus… but the foot on the gas pedal for this “being easy” part of my transition was actually getting a horrible 😩 gift 🎁 that I am even too embarrassed to tell you about right now! 😂 😂When I got that gift I IMMEDIATELY said to myself, “WTH am I teaching people about me? 🤦🏾‍♀️ Don’t even get mad Tasha, you teach people how to treat you and this is what you’ve taught them.” Well, I lied to them!!! 😂 Since then I became more honest with myself and honest with the world because honey that was not going to happen to me ever again! 😂 It was bad ya’ll! And don’t worry, I have already had this discussion with the person who gave me the gift… so relax it wasn’t you in case you were wondering. "what's eating you" My latest design to mark Mental Health Awareness Week. This time the theme is eating disorders. I've struggled with an ED since childhood. I've never liked my body nor the gender I was born into, but what triggered it was what happened to me in grade seven. Between the abuse and the bullying, I ended up hiding behind a thin facade of perfectionism. So many terrible things were happening to me, and I wanted some level of control in my life, no matter how small. I thought that I could at least control my body; I was mistaken. All these years later and four years of outpatient treatment, and yet it's still a struggle for me. I inserted a little humor in such a serious design by including Akiko, aka The Fox. Women, people of color, queer folks, disabled and neurodivergent folks — this message is for you. Imposter syndrome has NOTHING to do with your skill level or how valuable your voice and perspective is. It has everything to do with who built the system, and how it was meant to exclude you. You’ve had to fight bias and prove yourself over and over again to get the same respect as your peer John — and that resistance can very easily get internalized to make you feel like you’re not good enough. “You’ve messed up again and you’ll never get it right.” “You can’t go back to church, and God doesn’t care about you anymore after what you’ve done.” “You deserved that abuse and mistreatment.” “You’re too far gone in this darkness, just tap out.” “You’re too stupid and such a loser.” “No one will ever love you after what you’ve done." These are just some examples of the type of lies the enemy may have a stronghold over us to keep us away from God - to live a life of peace and fulfillment with the people we love. And we usually play these lies on repeat in our minds. What are the lies that you play on repeat? Let’s think about this. I have most of these statements of lies that I am in process of releasing to God with the help of my small trusted circle of people. As I do my best to unlearn these untruths and purge them out of my soul, I cling to the Cross of forgiveness and replace those condemning self-destructive ideas with the truth that I am unconditionally loved by God no matter what I have done, and that there are people whom will love and accept me for who I am. I am not alone! This process of shedding shame and falling into the fold of God’s care takes vulnerability and work to reach the state of freedom from bondage with spiritual wellbeing as we get closer to the presence of God. Since there's no such thing as perfect, do your best with the situation and with the resources you have to get as close to perfect as possible. It's about giving it what you can consistently, even when you don't feel like it. Perfectionism is 'all-or-nothing' thinking, also called 'black-or-white' thinking. This is distorted thinking that only leads to negativity and usually self-degradation. There is always something in between. When we treat it as such, as something to be constantly avoided, denied, or fought, particularly when death is inevitable in the relative short term, we can miss out on so much. Comfort. Time for meaningful goodbyes. Getting our affairs in order. Time to enjoy the people, things and places we love. Death isn’t a failure. It’s part of the experience of living. The medical system will encourage death denial. We have to be discerning to ensure those we love, and ourselves, can have the death we want, when we’re lucky enough to have choices. Also, can’t say this enough: do you have an advanced directive, medical power of attorney and will? Including specifying who will run your estate? Doing so is such an act of love and peace towards yourself and those you love. If you aren’t sure where to start or have questions, drop ‘em in the comments. Don’t fear it, sign it! And, as always, it’s death. There’s nothing wrong with it. Or you. Or your loved one. It can be sad and painful af, and it happens. It’s no one’s fault or failure. No need to add pressure to something that is already so big and hard. Our culture is so steeped in perfectionism they’ll have us all out here believing to die is to fail.
