Childhood trauma is one of those things that can be hard to let go of especially when it bleeds into your adulthood. It is easy to blame our parents/guardians or families for their shortcomings and the suffering and consequences it caused us. However, one thing is clear in healing and that is harboring the pain and anger only hurts us in the long run. Growing up as an introverted empath, I always felt like something was wrong or broken with me like I needed to be a social butterfly 🦋 with lots of friends to fit in but as I got older and prayed 🙏🏻 more I realized 💭that no personality or temperament is better than the other! As I got older I realized that my temperament and personality were preparing me for my role to be a therapist and help others in pain! This empathy HE gave me which was HIS gifts 🎁 were used to help those hurting and in pain. The introvert nature allowed me to observe and be intuitive on the needs of those I serve as a therapist. It allowed me to pick up on body language, facial expressions, and nonverbal communication which allowed me to understand not only what was said but what was not said! Did you know 80% of communication is nonverbal communication. 😊 The reason I posted this is because God places in certain roles, places and interactions for various reasons. Maybe 🤔 we were put to heal, encourage, support, guide, or mentor someone. Maybe in being authentically who you are- you inspire someone timid to embrace who they are! Maybe through your humor and silliness you wash 🧽 away someone's pain and help them see the lighter side of things and embrace the light heartedness. Life has been life(ing) and I've been MIA from this page but if I'm being honest I was considering to just close this account and focus on my business page but God has other plans! I was praying 🙏🏻 about this matter and I got a message from someone inquiring 🤨 why I disappeared and if everything was okay! I always hated that growing up it felt like I was passed down more generational trauma than generational wealth until I heard someone say that our weaknesses and wounds are someone else's healing ❤️🩹 and bandaid. "As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today." Genesis 50:20 This Bible verse comes to my mind when I think 💭 about all my pain, hard times and wounds. Yes, there was some bitter and challenging seasons but those times pushed me to depend on God's strength and not my own. If there's anything I've learned in my humble life is that if you give God your pain; HE will give you HIS strength. This post will probably ruffle some feathers 🪶 in the Coptic Community but I'll go to battle for this one because I'm seeing it grow like wildfire 🔥in our churches ⛪️. I see a growing number of young daters/engaged/ married people and many are being encouraged or praised for this in our community and churches. Yes, I know at this point you want to stone 🪨me or burn 🔥 me at the stake but I have good intentions because I see how this plays out in the future. Sadly, it leads to unhappy 🙁 marriages, separation, and possibly even divorce. There are many issues that come with dating and marrying young and the biggest component is maturity! Biologically, your prefrontal cortex isn't fully matured and becomes fully developed by the age of 25. This is the part of the brain 🧠 responsible for regulating our actions, thoughts and emotions through extensive connections with other brain regions. The hardest part of human relationships and interactions is trying to understand what relationships deplete you and which ones are worth cultivating and investing in. Sometimes we invest in unhealthy or dysfunctional relationships or friendships for varying reasons and struggle with setting up boundaries or cutting them off. Sometimes we keep investing in friendships or relationships because we are projecting our core beliefs, "I'm not good enough and that's why people leave or abandon me." In order to validate my worth I'll keep investing in them so they can see my worth. Learn when to walk away, stay or work on any relationship in your life. I once had a conversation with my mom and recall her telling me, "Nancy, your perception about people is almost always right! You have an amazing evaluation of people and are always 95% accurate." Sadly, my mom was right and I say sadly because my toxic trait is I can be cynical 🤨 about people. If there's anything pain has taught you is that you learn what people are about by their behavior and actions. I'm a huge believer of "actions speak 🗣️ louder than words". I see so many people who say a lot without any value or actions behind those words. I remember when someone came up to me and said, "I miss you so much and miss talking to you!" I quipped back with, " I'm not sure 🤔 how much you miss me but my number hasn't changed in years and I haven't heard from you 🤷🏻♀️(I can be a bit candor. Ask anyone who knows me I tell it like it is. I don't do a beautiful lie 🤥 to spare you but I also am not rude or curt). If you really want to know how people feel about you or towards you- Watch how they ACT. Stop 🛑 just listening to their words. No one is ever too busy to send a text or check in on you! I run a group practice business and still manage to text people in my life who matter in a timely fashion (no, it's not 5-7 business days bc I'm not shipping you a package 📦) You're a human being worthy of respect, honor and courtesy. Stop 🛑 letting people get into your life without them showing effort or care. A few months ago my youngest came up to me and said that being a therapist is easy because all I do is talk to people and that's it. Internally, I was stung and hurt but I can't blame an 11 year old kid to comprehend the work I do. Honestly, I feel like it's more than a "job" to me and I guess that's why I loved it so much that I birthed it into a business, @vanguardtherapy ! Being a therapist is such a honor and blessing because people allow you on their life journey and allow you to see them at their worst, best, and all the in between. You may be the only person in their life that hears and holds space for their pain and suffering if that isn't special I don't know 🤷🏻♀️ what is! It's okay to go to therapy and some of the religious trauma or narrative that you pray it away or have poor faith is erroneous and harmful! You can be a Christian and have a therapist or be on medication 💊 for your mental health. It doesn't mean you failed or have weak faith. It means you are human dealing with a medical condition. Going to therapy can help with many things like symptom management of a mental health condition, improve relationships, heal trauma and uncover the root cause for your behaviors and thoughts. One of the hardest lessons life teaches you is to have no expectations of people. It's an even harder pill 💊 when you truly care about them and have a loving heart ♥️. I never understood when people did me dirty because I would have never thought 💭 to do that to you. It hurts when even the bare minimum is not reciprocated. Me and my receptionist were talking last night about female friendships and she asked me "why are they so complicated?" She was telling me that she doesn't have any female friendships because they always end up with drama or toxic. I told her I don't know 🤷🏻♀️ because even at my age they are filled with drama, two faced people, cattiness and passive aggressive behavior towards each other. She went on to tell me that even among her mom's group of friends there was drama and nonsense and that her mom cut off all these women because they were toxic and she was shocked 😳 bc these are women in their 50s! "Do you like what you do?" A patient asked me. "Yes, I absolutely love it." - me They continued to ask me how I knew that I loved this and I told them how I felt like it was more of a calling for me than a job. Ironically, I almost 😅 decided that I wanted to be a lawyer but after working for an attorney for a couple of years; I realized that maybe this wasn't my career path. An unfortunate situation happened with my mom in college and she was diagnosed with cancer and it led me to be her caregiver and take her to all her appointments @memorialsloankettering hospital and I remember having a meeting with a hospital social worker and she talked to me about the mind-body connection and that piqued my interest in social work and mental health. What led me to decide to specialize in Mens Mental Health was my friend's suicide. Ironically, a lot of pain and suffering has led me to find my passion! I've been practicing since 2006 and I can't believe I've been in the field for 17 years! 🙈 It's been an honor that over the years many people have allowed me on their life journey and work together towards healing. When I look back there isn't anything that I would do differently about my career choices because I've been blessed to find my purpose and passion. This passion led me to open up my small business @vanguardtherapy in 2012. I remember back in 2010 when I was a new mom sometimes I'd sit in Corner Bakery Cafe in Fair Oaks Mall @fairoaksmall and scribble on scrap paper business ideas and what I envisioned for Vanguard Therapy @vanguardtherapy . Tomorrow is the Memorial of Fr. Mina Abood who was martyred by terrorists for his Christian faith. On my Lock Screen is a picture of Fr. Mina Abood and many people have asked me if he's my brother, husband, boyfriend or who he is and it allows me to share our Coptic Faith and talk about a Modern Day Martyr in our church. I honestly felt very strongly after reading his story @aspringinsinai "A Spring in Sinai" because it was the first time I read someone's biography and cried 🥹😭like a baby. It broke my heart that this Holy man willingly sacrificed his life for Christ as a young father and priest. I think 🤔 a lot as a girl mom (another thing we have in common is we both have 2 girls 👧🏻). This priest, Fr. Mina Abood lived solely for Christ that he willingly sacrificed his life instead of staying behind to be with his family; He was willing to be martyred and face religious persecution for our Lord & Savior. This picture was a gift 🎁 given to me because the person knew how much I felt attached to his life and story and connected to him. There is something special, serene and peaceful about Abouna Mina Abood's countenance. He always has this peaceful and powerful smile 😊 on his face in all pictures. His face exudes Christ's peace. May your memory live eternally my beloved Father Mina Abood. Don't let the people inside the church ⛪️ make you build your perception about your Heavenly Father. Over the years, I've counseled many people who struggle with religious trauma and many people I knew who left the church ⛪️ because of the people in the church. Honestly, I've considered many times myself of leaving the church. So many of us have witnessed hypocrisy, cliques, judgements & criticism by church people but the reality is all the people are NOT indicative of your perfect Heavenly Father who loves you unconditionally. Don't stop 🛑 going to church because of the actions of the people in the church for they are flawed sinners and don't let your expectations of Christians impede on having communion with your Heavenly Father in HIS House. (Matthew 18:12) This Bible verse is so beautiful and personal to me and all of us. Many times I question my own worth and value even times I tell myself negative things like "I'm worthless" or "No one cares about me" and than I'm reminded by this Bible verse in Matthew 18:12, that the Shepherd (Christ our God) left his 99 sheep 🐑 to find ME (the lost one)!!! How amazing, caring, thoughtful, loving and concerned our Great Father is that He would leave everything behind to find little old me? In our society, it makes No sense that someone would leave 99% of his belongings for that 1% that has gone astray or left. MOST people wouldn't care or statistically speaking would NOT bother to seek out the 1%. However, our God CARES about EVERYONE and wants us to be with HIM so badly that HE will leave everything to seek out the lost, the hurt, the forgotten, the lonely. God knows us soo intimately that HE knows the numbers of hairs on your head. God talks to us daily but the devil 😈 is soo good at what he does that he makes us soo deaf, blind, mute, and unaware of God seeking us out personally! Yes 🙌🏻 to all of this! I’m the first person in my family to go to therapy and will always be in therapy as it’s helped me with so many things in my life. When I started therapy I kept it a secret 🤫 and told no one 🤐because of fear of how people will view me and bc I grew up in an Egyptian community that saw therapy and mental health as something for “crazy people” or people who are damaged or broken. I remember the first person I told was my little brother and I honestly expected him to give me smack about as most brothers do but I was shocked when he told me he was proud of me and loved me. (Shoutout to my bro for always being my support system and pep talk king 🤴🏻). It’s taken me a few years to be open about saying this because of my fear of being judged in my Egyptian Coptic Community but I decided to be open and transparent because I want to normalize going to therapy like we do going to a doctor or the gym. . . . Over the years, I’ve had so many Middle Eastern people from my community and church secretly tell me they were in therapy or wanted to start therapy. I always found it sad 😢 among our community that we had to hide a tool that’s helpful for healing ❤️🩹 and growing. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH GOING TO THERAPY! I strongly recommend that everyone at least go once in their life. . . . I’ll say it loud and proud, “I GO TO Therapy!” I think 💭 everyone should go to therapy and not bc I’m a therapist but because we all need mental health check ins! . . . To all my lovely people in the Middle Eastern community or any minority that fears going- I highly recommend it as it’s very beneficial. Let’s stop 🛑 stigmatizing mental health and break the generational cycle that our previous generations taught us! Therapy isn’t a dirty word and there’s NOTHING WRONG with you for going to therapy. The hardest part of Christianity ✝️ for me has always been the concept of evangelism. If you know me; you know I’m an introvert loner and not a big preacher type but I’m trying to learn to be bold in my faith and it’s why I created this page. It’s my own form of evangelism of God. I hope 🤞🏻 that through this page many learn about the beauty of the Coptic Christian Orthodox Faith. My prayers are that people will come to God not because of my words but because of my actions. St. Francis of Assisi said, “Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words.” That concept has Always stuck strong in my mind because I’m not one for eloquent words but a big believer of people’s actions and behaviors.
