The DivorcĆ©es by @rbeaird š¶āš I enjoyed listening to this one! Itās a really interesting novel about a part of history I had absolutely no idea about: Reno divorce ranches. The world building and setting was so fascinating that at first I didnāt even care about the characters or plot. It was quite slow to start, and it was easy to forget you were reading a thriller and be lulled into a false sense of security. For the first half of the book, the tension simmers away slowly with the arrival of a new woman at the ranch - things slowly ramp up until you genuinely have no idea whatās about to happen next. Iād say this is a fantastic beach or summer read if youāre looking for a page turner to keep you company on a plane, at the beach, or by the pool. Hannah Mary MacKinnonās newest release, āOnly One Survivesā, is like a deliciously twisted version of āDaisy Jones and the Sixā, complete with murder and intrigue. Vienna is the protagonist and the story is told in reverse order (for the most part), starting on the day of the accident and working backwards, right up until the very end. There is non-stop action and an endless supply of twists and turns that kept me turning the pages! Vienna and Madison have a toxic and co-dependent relationship that was definitely going to turn ugly fast, as they both struggled with their own ambitions and desires to be famous. But what actually happened on that snowy night? Only Vienna knows and not all parts of her story match up. Somehow, I managed to actually like Vienna and I almost (almost) cheered for her long after I shouldāve stopped doing so. McKinnon wrote a character I grew unexpectedly attached to, and that was just another one of many surprises in this story! āSurvivesā has epic twists but none more epic than the final one- which was completely unexpected. There were so many different routes McKinnon couldāve taken to get to the ending, but Iām glad she went in the direction she did. The Best Way to Bury Your Husband By Alexia Casale š£ļøQuick Thoughts: Hilariously dark! šReview: Based on the tittle I knew this book would be a bit dark and I was ok with that. But anyone wanting to read this one should know going in that if domestic abuse is a trigger for you just put this one down now. The plot revolves around multiple women whoāve escaped their abusive spouses in the most harrowing way possible, murder. Clearly we all know thatās awful, but itās hard to feel bad for the āvictimsā considering the physical, mental, and emotional harm they put their wives and families through. Casale set her book during the beginning of the COVID lockdowns which I found extremely poignant. I donāt think enough attention or resources were put towards those facing lockdown with their abusers during that time. You do have to suspend your disbelief for this book to work as the scenarios of how the women linked up and hid their spouses demise is quite outlandish. However, the relationships between each wife and her abuser as well as their reasons for staying despite their imminent danger was incredibly realistic and well written. The friendships the women formed after realizing how alike their situations are despite being from different walks of life is truly heartwarming. There is a āgotchaā moment at the end that while I had a feeling it was coming about a third of the way through the book still made me laugh out loud! As great as romantic love stories can be, nothing compares to the beauty of the female friendships and loves of my life ā¤ļø Please meet, the wonderful and incredible Cheetahs š When researching for The Discovery Project, Lauren and I attended the brilliant @thera.sea retreat back in 2021. As soon as we met @sueziqueue and @rosina_s2 we just clicked instantly and the conversation was non-stop šŖ After discovering we all loved self-development books one of us uttered - 'have you read Untamed?' this was the moment we knew it was love š(for any of you that have read @glennondoyle's master piece, you'll get the Cheetahs reference!) Ever since then we have met every 3 months, the structure is always the same: - A nice Airbnb, ideally somewhere near the sea - No plans or organised fun or agenda - Only essentials are plenty of tea bags for cuppas and conversation We call them our quarterly reviews, as we have them with work, why not have them with life? Also to avoid the dreaded diary gymnastics - we book the weekends a year in advance to help reduce stress š We all hate how much life ties us to our phones, so the beauty of these meet ups is that it doesn't matter if we don't speak in-between our QR, we know that we'll have the opportunity to discuss and process together at some point āØ Nothing keeps us apart, whether we have babies or bereavements - we protect our weekends fiercely and I can't tell you how important they are to our wellbeing š In a world that wants us to prioritise romantic relationships above all else, why not take this as a reminder to organise some quality time with your other soulmates? This is what kind of woman/friend I hope I am. This the kind of woman my momma was. IāM A BIG FAN OF WOMEN Iām a big fan of women with raucous laughs, women who overshare awkward truths, when the conversation stalls. Iām a lover of singing loudly in the car whenever possible and I love pulling alongside a fellow diva doing the same. Iām a big fan of women who love women, who spot lipstick on teeth and help each other out, when Mother Nature calls. Iām a huge believer in comparison being the thief of joy, that dimming someone elseās light, wonāt ever make yours shine more brightly. I just canāt get enough of those women, who are unashamedly themselves, in technicolour glory. Iām a lover of laughter and those moments, when the tears of joy start to flow, give me life. I think the best therapy is quality time with a friend, who listens without judgement. Iām a big fan of women who break, who share, who rebuild each other and cheer along the way.
