People pleasing is a quiet agreement to put others' needs above our own… 👉We become agreeable and masters of compromise. 👉We effortlessly blend in to what is expected of us, and bend over backwards to accommodate others. We may do it to gain approval, be liked, and avoid conflict, or we may be terrified of rejection or abandonment if we assert our own needs. 👉We feel guilty if we tend to our needs, so we rarely do. People-pleasers’ self-esteem is often tightly tied to how happy they make others: It is externally driven instead of coming from within. Over time, people-pleasers often don’t know who they are or what they like because they’ve focused on meeting others’ wants, needs, and desires for so long. To build our self-esteem from within requires working through blocks to feeling it’s okay to have our needs met too. In Emotion-Focused Therapy, as we work through these blocks, we want to get people-pleasers angry. 😮Yes, you read that right: We want to help you connect to a healthy degree of anger in response to the part of you that’s stopping you from getting your needs met…that inner voice that warns you of all the bad things that will happen if you try or do. You are only as liberated as you are integrated. Do you agree? I wouldn't be able to do the work I'm doing today if the practice of integration wasn't central to my journey. We are in resistance when we are fragmented. We self sabotage when we are fragmented. Our shadow runs the show when we are fragmented. We feel unable to heal when we are fragmented. We run from love when we are fragmented. We keep the heart closed when we are fragmented. I think you get the point. At the core of most of our suffering there is fragmentation. The antidote to fragmentation is integration. And your own love is what brings all the parts together. Life itself is the ultimate balancing mechanism. It will keep highlighting through external circumstances the parts of you that you run from until you are able to love them. And when you do that it frees you. My personal rule of thumb is that for every intersection of your life where you feel stuck, there are a collection of parts that you get to integrate in order to move forward. And so far it hasn't failed me yet. Is it always easy? No. Is it liberating? Absolutely. Several years ago, I launched the first cohort of a group experience: INTEGRATE. And when is it time to tell them to f*ck off?⁠ ⁠ Your inner critic is that part of you that tries to protect you from making mistakes, but it can become overbearing. It's crucial to acknowledge and engage with it in a healthy way...⁠ ⁠ 😶 It's not about silencing or banishing it, it's about finding a balance.⁠ ⁠ Naming your inner critic can be empowering. It gives you a sense of control over these negative voices. ⁠ ⁠ Our Bond 7 Coach @yekemiotaru told us about her inner critic, "Janice." By personifying it, you can recognise it as a separate entity rather than an integral part of yourself.⁠ ⁠ Janice has good intentions, but sometimes she's a bit too overprotective. You can gently remind her that you're safe, that there are no tigers lurking, and that you don't need constant vigilance. This acknowledgment is your way of taking control. You let Janice know that she has a role, but it's not to dominate your thoughts. She needs to stay quiet when it's not necessary.⁠ ⁠ You can even use a template like this in your journal to have conversations with your inner critic:⁠ ⁠ [Read the template aloud] "Janice, I know you're trying to protect me from making a huge mistake because in my last job, I made a small mistake and was shamed for that. Sickness can really rock your business schedule. And if you have a youngling like me, you know that sickness happens a lot. Let's not even mention SNOW DAYS! Ugh!⁠ ⁠ So what do you do when your little is stuck at home without any concrete time to work?⁠ What do you do when YOU are the one who is sick?⁠ ⁠ ONE | You rely on your automations.⁠ ⁠ Seriously, this is the #1 reason that you really need automations. So that you don't need to stress out about if someone wants to sign up for a discovery call or is signing a proposal while you are out of the office.⁠ ⁠ TWO | You send out an email to your clients.⁠ ⁠ Get ahead of deadlines falling behind by letting your clients know that you are out of the office due to sickness. If you can give an estimate of when you plan to be back in, then do that. But if you really don't know, don't make promises that you aren't at least 90% sure that you can keep.⁠ ⁠ THREE | Don't stress yourself out.⁠ ⁠ This one I know is insanely hard. Your mind wants to be in work mode on your usual schedule. Trying to adjust off of that can be really hard. Especially when you are worrying about falling behind and all of this isn't planned. ⁠ ⁠ FOUR | Take moments for yourself when you can. ⁠ ⁠ Whether I take a bath when I'm the one sick, or get the younling to have some quiet time on the couch so I can catch a few winks. It's important to find those mini moments of "me time."

Usually, when we are overly demanding of ourselves, we develop a voice we can call the inner critic. This voice is one of our harshest tyrants, always ready to criticize and hurt us. However, if we delve deeper, we can see that the root of this inner critic is fear. Fear of not being loved and accepted. That’s why it’s a good idea to start making peace with ourselves and increasing our own security. Some ways to do this may include developing self-compassion skills (you can find some meditation videos on my channel) or establishing useful self-care routines (e.g., taking a bath or enjoying a hot chocolate). But above all, it’s essential to notice in which situations or activities your inner critic’s voice activates (you can develop this skill by practicing mindfulness, and you can find some videos on my channel for that too). It is that negative, self-doubting, criticizing and punitive voice that says: 😔You can't do it. 😔You're not smart enough. 😔There's no chance you're going to make it. 😔You're not good enough. 😔You are not ready yet. If you start now, you will screw it up. 😔You always fail. What makes you think it's going to be any different this time? And if we give in, if we listen to it: we start believing it. Maybe we think our inner critic is keeping us safe. Hey, how are you doing this sunny Friday morning? It’s been a couple of months since I posted on social media. Self-abandonment is a pattern of behavior where we neglect our own needs and feelings in order to save a relationship or meet another individual’s expectations and desires. Seeking support can immensely help in identifying and working against these self-abandoning patterns. One common concern I see my clients talk about is 'how to build self-trust while healing', as their previous patterns have always been self-abandoning, and they have reached a place where they find it difficult to trust themselves to do the right thing for themselves. This 'in-between' space, between healing and succumbing to the natural pull of these ingrained patterns, can seem very challenging. But persistence and patience are key.
