This is my mother, I know Mother's Day is not until Sunday but can I just say I adore and cherish this woman. She is my best friend and my mentor. When I was about 2 years old, my parents realized that I had one eye that wasn’t working properly. I had to go to a million eye doctor visits, wear an eyepatch and bifocals for years, but I was so young that it was able to be completely corrected by 4th grade. In the early 80s, at least in my memory, the drops that they used to dilate your eyes were very, very painful. I had to have my eyes dilated a LOT. I distinctly remember screaming and crying and the whole doctors’ office having to come in and hold me down so that the doctor could examine my eyes. 40-some years have passed, my eyes are now near-perfect, everything is ok, and I should be over it, right? But, no. That’s just not how trauma works, because all of that is logic, and trauma isn’t logical. Luckily for me, I don’t have to go to many eye exams these days (except for today, for my doc to confirm that, yes, I am getting old and so my cornea is getting less flexible?) But that doesn’t mean my body hasn’t forgotten the trauma of being violated against my will, of my choice being taken away, of pain being inflicted on me by the people I was supposed to be able to trust. If I’m in a situation that in some way triggers these experiences, I feel like a small child who has no choice, no voice, and who cannot trust others. And I therefore respond as a small child in this situation might. Everyone’s trauma is different, and oftentimes no one is at fault. But that doesn’t mean it still isn’t real and doesn’t impact us. Sometimes all we can do is build awareness of and compassion towards our younger, wounded selves. #trauma #traumahealing #traumainformed #childhoodtrauma #medicaltrauma #compassion #regression

I am in Albuquerque today for work. I had some time to spare so I went out to meander, got lost in my audibles and when I looked up found myself in front of the Holocaust and Intolerance Museum of Albuquerque. The curious thing is that this is not the first time. It started 5 years ago when I was in Boise Idaho to speak at another conference. Out on a morning run, I ran into the Idaho Anne Frank Human Rights Museum.
