Quite often, a child who is shamed for making mistakes becomes an adult who self-induces shame every time they make a mistake.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Do you see your own mistakes as an opportunity to grow and just part of the learning process?⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Or do you feel shame when you learn something new?⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Example of Sydney⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Sydney’s Parent: “What are you doing? Why aren’t you rinsing the dishes? How stupid can you be? If you don’t rinse the dishes everything tastes like soap. It’s common sense.”⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Sydney thinks “how did I not know that? I’m so stupid.”⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Sydney becomes a parent and is faced with many new facts about child development. With each fact Sydney repeats the shame cycle of feeling “stupid” every time they learn something new.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Does your mind respond with “aha!” Or “uh-oh!” To new information?⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ How we perceive learning can greatly impact our emotional responses to learning new things about parenting. We can shift the way we see our learning process and give ourselves more grace.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Learn more about this 👇 ⁣⁣ Finding Your Calm: A Responsive Parents Guide to Self-Regulation and Co-Regulation⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Link in bio @responsive_parenting or on the Website: responsiveparentinginspirations.com⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ #ResponsiveParenting #JMilburn #ParentMentalHealth #MaternalMentalHealth #PostPartum #MensMentalHealth #ParentingLife #HealingJourney #GentleParenting #AttachmentParenting #Attachment #AttachmentTheory #Parenthood #SelfHealing #SelfCompassion #EarlyChildhood #ChildDevelopment #PTSD #CPTSD #ChildhoodMemories #Triggers #HoldingSpace #SelfRegulation #Empathy #UnconditionalLove #Parent #KidLife #AlwaysLearning #PTSDAwareness

People who say these phrases may have an avoidant attachment quality and if they are feeling this way about their own children, their child may also develop avoidant attachment quality. The problem with trying to change this is it can be hard for those with avoidant attachment to recognize what their challenges are (the “I turned out fine mentality” or “at least I’m not beating them, like I was.”). Projection and minimizing are just coping skills that people use to manage uncomfortable feelings. Self-reflection and feelings were not allowed when they were children so it is hard to convince them that these things are important to a child’s development. But they are also necessary to their transformation… how do you enlighten someone gently to their need to heal if they find the suggestion offensive? If it feels like just another way they are failing and not the opportunity for growth, that it is? That’s one of the polar difference between avoidant and anxious attachment; Avoidant people are often unaware of, or in denial of their need to heal while anxious people are often so acutely aware of their need to heal that it consumes them. Somewhere in the middle is what we aim for. Knowing we need healing but being ok with that… as ok as one can be.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ You could always leave my book on the coffee table…. For the one you love, who you think has avoidant attachment 👇⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣Finding Your Calm: A Responsive Parents Guide to Self-Regulation and Co-Regulation⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Link in bio @responsive_parenting or on the Website: responsiveparentinginspirations.com⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ #ResponsiveParenting #JMilburn #ParentMentalHealth #MaternalMentalHealth #PostPartum #MensMentalHealth #ParentingLife #HealingJourney #GentleParenting #AttachmentParenting #Attachment #AttachmentTheory #Parenthood #SelfHealing #SelfCompassion #EarlyChildhood #ChildDevelopment #PTSD #CPTSD #ChildhoodMemories #Triggers #HoldingSpace #SelfRegulation #Empathy #UnconditionalLove #Parent #KidLife #AlwaysLearning #PTSDAwareness

Do this for yourself and your child.... 🧠Remind yourself this “I do NOT have to be perfect for them, my child just needs me to be present for them.” 💡I know you don’t want to BE this perfect parent or fit into other people’s expectations of that. I know you’re on this journey to breaking these old family cycles and stop using your parents’ parenting tools. 🌱Show up as yourself with your kid. You’re going to make mistakes. So let the worries and negativity go. Focus on being PRESENT. CONSCIOUS. MINDFUL in the moment of parenting. If you agree, and are ready to parent differently than your parents did, comment “PRESENT” below. Vas a cometer errores. 💪🏽 - - #crianza #crianzarespetuosa #crianzapositiva #crianzaconsciente #consciousparent #mindfulparenting #mindfulparent #mindfulparents #parentingaffirmations #parentaffirmation #affirmaciondecrianza #humansraisinghumans #raizparenting #desdelaraíz #latinoparents #latinxparents #latineparents #latinamoms #latinomoms #latinamentalhealth #parentmentalhealth

🧠 Do you know a recent study has revealed that 1 in 14 children has a parent or caregiver with poor mental health? 📌Why is this important? The mental health of parents and caregivers affects the overall well-being of children. When parents are mentally healthy, they can provide the stability, emotional support, and nurturing environment that children need to thrive. When parents and caregivers are mentally unhealthy it can lead to: ❌ Increased stress and anxiety in children ❌ Difficulty in forming secure attachments ❌ Behavioral issues and academic struggles ❌Long-term impacts on their own mental health Dear parents, remember, taking care of your mental health is not just for you, but for your child’s future too. Let’s break the stigma and support mental wellness for all. 💙 . . . . #thebrainhousecompany #parentmentalhealth #parentproblems #parentsupport #parentingquotes #parentcoach #singleparent #parentsquad #parenting101 #parentingislam #parentingindonesia #parentingquotes #autismparent #parentingproblems #parentingskills #mentalhealth #mentalhealthtips #mentalhealthhelp #mentalhealthrecovery #MentalHealthAwareness #Parenting #ChildDevelopment #FamilyWellness #Brainhouse

Teenagers! 🌟 While facilitating programmes with teen girls, it was very obvious that their self esteem and confidence were low... Some phrases they used were; " didn't feel good enough" "Never met Mam and Dad's expectations " "Feeling judged by friends" " Don't have any talents" Low self esteem and low self confidence is part of anxiety. We cannot deal with an anxious mind without doing work on self esteem and confidence first... it goes hand in hand ! I feel that Irish culture remains backwards in terms of guiding students in esteem, confidence and general well-being. We have progressed but there's a long road ahead for our children. What are your thoughts? Or more importantly, how is your confidence and your teen's confidence ? #teen #parentmentalhealth #confidence #selfesteem #resilient

Posted @withregram • @responsive_parenting If you don’t model how to express anger in ways that don’t hurt others, how will your children know how to? When I ask a question like this, I’m flooded with comments asking “what is a healthy way to express anger?” Well, in general, it’s anything that doesn’t hurt you or someone else. If you’re still confused by that explanation, I would say you are not alone. I think finding the balance here, learning how to model emotional intelligence, is one of the more complex and difficult challenges of parenting responsively. 💆🏻How can a BALM help you feel CALM? 4️⃣ BALM is a tool I created from 4 key evidence-based techniques proven to help you slow down your reactions with your kids. ✨ It helps you to regulate your nervous system so you can take a pause, think more clearly, then respond in a way that you choose, rather than automatically reacting. 🧴You can imagine putting on a soothing skin balm to help you remember the steps at tricky moments - but it’s also helpful to practice it at non-stressful times, so it comes more easily to you under pressure. 🪷 BALM is made up of: B - Breathe A - Allow L - Label M - Mantra 🌬️ Breathe: we learn how & why our breathing is so important in activating the parasympathetic nervous system, & how we can use this in a doable way. 🍃 Allow: we start to develop greater awareness of how we are feeling & the ability to let this be, without being afraid or trying to immediately change it. 🏷️ Label: we practice naming our thought processes, emotions, & body feelings, which is proven to help reduce their power & increase our ability to choose more consciously (“name it to tame it”). 🖌️Mantra: we discover the power of the words we tell ourselves & start to build new neural pathways. 🧩 You can follow the whole process, or you can also use each step separately. You can take your time with it, or you can use it quickly in the moment. 🪷 We cover BALM in depth amongst other tools in the first P Key of The Guilty Parent Club: Perspective. But you can practice it right now, too! #imperfectparenting #selfcompassion #emotionalregulation #parentmentalhealth #parentstress #parentoverwhelm #mindfulparenting #acceptanceandcommitmenttherapy #mumguilt #dadguilt #parentguilt #parentalburnout

Saying “it makes me sad when you don’t listen” is not a great way to teach empathy and emotional intelligence. A common (but outdated) strategy is to tell children when they don’t obey us that they are making us sad. We have since realized how damaging this approach can be, as it creates a fawn response, when the child needs support. The focus is taken from the child’s emotional needs, to the adult’s . It’s a guilt trip 🤷‍♀️ Pretty common in the parenting of the 80’s and 90’s but we’re working to grow from that to using tool that actually do support emotional intelligence and the development of empathy. We can help children to recognize their own emotions and the emotions of others, without shaming them or making them responsible for our emotions. Simple phrases such as this one above, can create the roots of parentification and enmeshment. Instead, acknowledge your feelings without placing blame “I’m feeling kind of frustrated and worried right now because we’re running late. I’m going to take some deep breaths so it’s easier to stay calm.” Learn more about how to encourage the development of your child’s emotional intelligence in my latest book 👇 ⁣⁣ Finding Your Calm: A Responsive Parents Guide to Self-Regulation and Co-Regulation⁣⁣ Link in bio @responsive_parenting or on the Website: responsiveparentinginspirations.com⁣⁣ #ResponsiveParenting #JMilburn #ParentMentalHealth #MaternalMentalHealth #PostPartum #MensMentalHealth #ParentingLife #HealingJourney #GentleParenting #AttachmentParenting #Attachment #AttachmentTheory #Parenthood #SelfHealing #SelfCompassion #EarlyChildhood #ChildDevelopment #PTSD #CPTSD #ChildhoodMemories #Triggers #HoldingSpace #SelfRegulation #Empathy #UnconditionalLove #Parent #KidLife #AlwaysLearning #PTSDAwareness

Posted @withregram • @responsive_parenting It’s not your child’s job to make you feel valued and appreciated. ⁣ ⁣ The sooner we realize this and accept it, the easier it is to start meeting our own emotional needs.⁣ ⁣ So often we feel this way because someone else made us feel like we need to act appreciative, as a child. It is a complex topic but it feeds into the “conditional love” that we are trying hard to avoid. It’s wonderful to feel appreciated and it’s great if they do express genuine appreciation. It’s the expectation of it and the reliance on it to feel valued, that can create an insecure bond.⁣ ⁣ Learn more about this in my latest book 👇⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Finding Your Calm: A Responsive Parents Guide to Self-Regulation and Co-Regulation⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Link in bio @responsive_parenting or on the Website: responsiveparentinginspirations.com⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ #ResponsiveParenting #JMilburn #ParentMentalHealth #MaternalMentalHealth #PostPartum #MensMentalHealth #ParentingLife #HealingJourney #GentleParenting #AttachmentParenting #Attachment #AttachmentTheory #Parenthood #SelfHealing #SelfCompassion #EarlyChildhood #ChildDevelopment #PTSD #CPTSD #ChildhoodMemories #Triggers #HoldingSpace #SelfRegulation #Empathy #UnconditionalLove #Parent #KidLife #AlwaysLearning #PTSDAwareness

Ever heard the saying, “You can’t pour from an empty cup”? 🍶 It’s true for parents too! 👉🏽 Here’s a radical idea: your healing journey might be the most important thing you can do for your kids. ✨ Think about it: when you’re stressed, overwhelmed, or carrying past hurts, it impacts your patience, communication, and overall well-being. A “clingy” baby is one who is secure in their own ability to receive love from their attachment figure. They need you, it’s a matter of survival. They do not have much of a developed frontal lobe yet, so they’re all instinct. The results of week 3/6 of EC Transform. My client came to me after trying countless diets and restrictions that never seemed to stick. She was ready to create a healthier life for herself, once and for all. We’re only 3 weeks in and she’s already wearing trousers a size smaller than she was, feeling slimmer, healthier and making healthier food choices which feels effortless! If you’ve been struggling to see lasting results and want to transform your body and mind, it’s time to join EC Transform. Djeca ne trebaju ni 4 izvanškolske aktivnosti, ne trebaju hrpu novih igračaka, ne trebaju ispunjen raspored, ali djeca trebaju nas, takve kakvi jesmo, stvari i nesavršeni. Why do so many people still believe that punishment is the best way to teach a child something?⁣ ⁣ Even people who want to be responsive have an arbitrary limit where if their child was to cross that line, they would feel like punishment was the only way to help them to learn. If we see punishment as still an option we’re constantly at war with ourselves about how to teach our child a lesson. This battle within ourselves can leave us feeling conflicted and unsure of our approach. Fully surrendering to the idea of removing punishment from your life, not just your parenting, can feel terrifying but actually doing it is freeing.⁣ ⁣ You can replace correction with connection. ⁣ ⁣ Learn more about this in my latest book 👇⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Finding Your Calm: A Responsive Parents Guide to Self-Regulation and Co-Regulation⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Link in bio @responsive_parenting or on the Website: responsiveparentinginspirations.com⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ #ResponsiveParenting #JMilburn #ParentMentalHealth #MaternalMentalHealth #PostPartum #MensMentalHealth #ParentingLife #HealingJourney #GentleParenting #AttachmentParenting #Attachment #AttachmentTheory #Parenthood #SelfHealing #SelfCompassion #EarlyChildhood #ChildDevelopment #PTSD #CPTSD #ChildhoodMemories #Triggers #HoldingSpace #SelfRegulation #Empathy #UnconditionalLove #Parent #KidLife #AlwaysLearning #PTSDAwareness

Our tone is one way our nervous system signals dysregulation. So being rude is typically a sign of being dysregulated. “Is this true for teens too?” Yes, it’s also developmentally appropriate for children age 9 and up to have a of an “attitude” or be “rude” at times and yes it’s usually a sign that something is bothering them. Think of yourself, are you rude on purpose or are you rude when you feel dysregulated? It’s not your child’s job to make you feel valued and appreciated.

Did you know…. “Trying to be a “perfect” parent is actually linked to anxious insecure attachment quality…. So “Good Enough” is actually better than “Perfect” from an attachment perspective .” J. Milburn What does that mean? It means that balance and grace aren’t just bonuses you try to give yourself, they are mandatory and necessary with Responsive Parenting. Really, it’s about being responsive to yourself, as well as your children. It really is necessary. If you are feeling overwhelmed with your role as a parent, most minutes of most days, you may be trying too hard. Sitting down and reflecting on what aspects you can give yourself more grace in, can actually help you to meet the needs you do think are most important, more effectively. Every parent who I mentor is trying 10 x harder than I ever do at this parenting thing. Many of you are trying to follow every recommendation you find, and so many contradict each other. A parent who is constantly doubting themselves may not be providing that secure base a child needs. Consistency can look very different for every home. As an example, we don’t believe in fighting about bed time so our children mostly go to bed when they want to. People contact me wanting me to tell them how to get their child to WANT to go to bed by 7:30. It’s hard to have it both ways. Often you have to choose one or the other. We choose no battle and late bedtime… maybe you choose battle and earlier bedtime… see it can look very different from home to home. Things we do with kids that we expect them to be grateful for (and therefore BEHAVE) 1. Outings (zoo, skating, theme park) 2. Toy store 3. Getting a treat (ice cream, etc.) 4. Going on a trip 5. Birthday parties BUT did you know that all these events actually cause some level of stress, even if it’s from excitement. So I expect these events/days to be more stressful for EVERYONE! I expect my children and myself to struggle more on these days. This is not about a lack of gratitude, it’s our nervous system reacting to novelty. That dopamine hit from the excitement gets our adrenaline going. Adults become more hyper aware and tense. Children become more impulsive and their behaviour is often more boisterous and playful. This excitement might trigger you more so you try to correct them. Everyone is already elevated with excitement, so the correction is hard for them to do and also, they are more likely to react instead of respond to your request. This doesn’t mean we avoid these things because the memories are worth it, we just adjust our expectations. Don’t have an expectation for gratitude and try to plan events that won’t, undoubtedly, send members of the family outside the window of tolerance. It’s healthy to know your limits and plan within them. Let’s say you really want to have a beach day but transportation means you have to take 3 buses with 3 kids to the beach. You would be alone and that’s just a lot to handle. So instead, plan a “beach day” at home with a little blow up pool or even in the bath tub. Children will remember that just as much as the actual beach. Because it’s the time spent together. Not the location. Question that always comes up with this post ….⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ “How do I model processing emotions in a healthy way when I don’t know how?”⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ It can take years to build these skills so you let your child see you healing journey (within a developmentally appropriate way). It can be a messy journey to deconstruct all the negative thought patterns, avoidance strategies and emotional triggers that have built up inside of us over the years. Often these become just a part of us, but then our children arrive and shine a big light on all these things we’ve just been coping with for years. I wrote a book about how much more emotional capacity we need to be a parent and how to find that capacity through healing and caring for yourself the way you care for your children.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ “Your child does not need a “happy mom.” They need a REAL parent. One with a range of emotions. One that feels comfortable to express those emotions and then models how to process those emotions, without guilt or shame. Grant yourself the same grace and forgiveness you give your child.” J. Today I recorded a podcast with Dajana and Shinead from Time to Exhale Podcast @ www.exhaletherapy.ca. We talked about my experience supporting children through grief while grieving. My children, now adults, were 9 and 6 years old when my husband died suddenly. I learned a lot about what was helpful or not from the experience and have continued to learn about how to support children through loss and grief while nurturing resilience and well-being. Now I hope my story and knowledge can help others feel less alone when supporting children through loss and grief. Stay tuned! I will let you know when the podcast will air and will soon announce a free workshop; The Elephant in the Room, Supporting Children Through Loss and Grief. Self-regulation is taught through co-regulation. Those who do not receive enough co-regulation, as a young child, may not develop many self-regulation skills. Instead, they may suppress or react to emotions that make them uncomfortable. The pathways in our brains that tell our bodies and minds what to do with certain emotions, are set in early childhood. The pathways that develop into self-regulation are created through co-regulation. Without enough co-regulation, different pathways are made and self-regulation becomes harder because our brains want to do what we’ve always done… what works. It takes so much intentional effort to stop yourself from taking that well-worn pathway and trying something else. What’s your go-to? Suppression, reaction or regulation?
