I told my father-in-law I hope I’ll be in remission someday. “I want to share something with you,” he said. “But you’re only the second person to read this.” I gingerly opened the letter and read. My father-in-law wrote that in his worst moment with cancer, a strange peace came to him. Although he isn’t religious, he felt G-d wanted him to know that one day he’d be in remission. He actually beat cancer not long after this, and he’s been cancer free for almost 17 years! “That’s pretty powerful. I hope I’ll always remember it—to keep my own hope alive.” “Well…” He handed me something he’d planned on giving me for a while. “This is for you to keep so you’ll remember this moment and what happened to me. A group had asked for a violinist to help them with a play. “We’ll tell the story,” the woman said, “of a battered violin an auctioneer tries selling. But no one will want it. And when the auctioneer is about to practically give it away, someone will step from the audience and play the violin to show its true worth.” They picked me to solo on the violin during the play. Following the musical piece, actors would bid on the violin, and it would “mock-sell” for a fortune. I loved every second, especially when I weaved through the crowd and played Jewish melodies that touched upon strings of the heart. The little violin my father-in-law carved felt magical because it reignited the power of a long forgotten memory and made my feel pure joy. I wanted to tell him about the play, but before I could speak, he pointed out a laminated note meant to accompany the violin. My breath caught in my throat. I was stunned!
