Nature is blooming, the days are getting longer, and the weather is warmer. Yes, finally, summer is slowly arriving. We can wear something other than hoodies, sit in the park, and go swimming. But just as we are excited, so were our ancestors. There were and are many celebrations on or around May 1st for different reasons, or are they all the same? 🌷 Beltane is one of the four seasonal Gaelic festivals between the spring equinox on the 21st of March and the summer solstice on the 20th or 21st of June. May 1st is in the middle of those dates and it is supposed to be the day on which the veil between the spirit world and ours is thinnest. 🔥 Beltane is the festival of fire and fertility, therefore there are many traditions around it. “Beltane” means something like a bright fire, which underlines the meaning: the dark winter is over and the bright half of the year is there, so during celebration there is always a bonfire lit. 👹 The Pagan May Celebration “Beltane” was also celebrated in other parts of Europe, such as Germany. It was believed that witches and other evil spirits would meet at the Brocken (a mountain in Harz, Germany) and dance with the devil. This belief became more popular through Faust Part 2, which was written by Goethe and describes this night. Today’s celebrations, from April 30 to May 1, are named Walpurgis Night, which coincidentally stands for the complete opposite of witches. 🐑 There are multiple very different names for spring celebrations in Turkey, Macedonia, and other Balkan and Slavic countries. A few of the names are Ederlezi, Hidirellez, Saint Georg´s Day, Đurđevdan, or ѓурѓовден. Those who use the Julian calendar celebrate the day on May 5–6. After the Georgian calendar, the day falls on the 23rd of April. Both Christians and Muslims celebrate this day, and the festivities are mixed with pagan traditions. Goddess Friday- As part of my Run Down for Beltane I want to turn my attention today to the Goddess. We saw at the start of the week how Beltane is linked with the God Bel, Cernanous, and the Oak King. That Beltane sees the Maiden Goddess have a night of wild abandonment with the God. Now at Beltane we can honour, invoke and invite any Maiden Goddess we are drawn to from any pantheon but for me it is the Goddess Flora who rules now and who I personally celebrate on the Flower Full Moon in May. Flora, unlike the Gods I mentioned who are Celtic in origin, comes to us from Ancient Rome. She is the Goddess of Flowers; Spring, Love, Fertility, Sex and therefore governs the renewal we see in the cycle of life. Flora had her own festival Floralia from 27th April to the 3rd May. With all the merriment and lusty enjoyment, we associate with Beltane. When the Romans invade the Celtic lands how easily she fitted in with this season. Flowers were worn in the hair and now we see the May Queen we are familiar with. How to harness the energy of Flora? Think flowers, they have their own magick based on their type and colour. Those joining me for the Flower Moon will explore this in more detail then, but for now, let yourself be drawn to flowers they could be in your garden, on a walk, in the supermarket. Place them on your altar. How do they make you feel? Look at their shape, feel their energy. I have a small statue of Flora in the garden when I have peonies and seasonal flowers growing. When you are mediating or doing spell weaving for any of the areas Flora governs call on her beautiful energy- you could even wear floral prints, perfume or pop a flower in your hair. Het is fijn om de Beltane energie weer te voelen 💚 De beweging om me heen van de natuur die verder tot bloei komt en van de dieren die druk in de weer zijn, helpt om zelf ook echt weer in beweging te komen. En dat is meer dan welkom met meerdere evenementen in de planning, waaronder @eallum.official , @hxtival en in augustus voor het eerst @castlefest 😁 Voor een tijdje twijfelde ik wel of ik de energie van Beltane ook weer in mezelf zou voelen, maar inmiddels voel ik ruimschoots de motivatie voor meer projecten dan dat ik tijd heb 😅🙈 Al voelt het daardoor ook een beetje dubbel, met de druk om zoveel mogelijk te (moeten) doen, en angst om kostbare tijd te verspillen.. Tegelijkertijd voel ik ook dat niet alles in één keer en nu direct hoeft. Het jaarwiel en daarmee de seizoenen blijven doordraaien en ik weet dat ze niet op mij zullen wachten. Lily of the valley is steeped in legend. It’s the official flower of May, also known as May lily, or May bells. The flower is often referred to as Mary’s Tears, which refers to an old Christian legend where lily of the valley sprouted out of the same ground Virgin Mary’s tears dropped on, as she wept during Jesus’ crucifixion. An alternative legend explains that the lily of the valley flowers grew from the tears of Eve, after she was separated from Adam and cast out of the garden of Eden. The flower is mentioned several times in the Bible. In ancient times it was associated with humility and purity, as well as the goddess Ostara (from whose name we get our modern Easter) This was my Nan’s favourite flower. Here it is pictured underneath the weeping cherry tree in my garden.
