Pinch me!! This moment has been three years in the making. My absolute dream garden here on the mountaintop homestead. Kyle and I have been AT IT for a couple of weeks—starting with clearing out the area and leveling the land, then designing, fetching materials, hauling soil, and getting the plants in the dirt! There’s still more to do aesthetically… stones for the ground, lights, and even a couple more beds and plantings, but holy smokes I feel like I’m in heaven. We welcomed 2 Ameraucana x, 1 Rhode island red x, 1 Silkie & 1 Satin silkie laying chicks 🐥 yesterday! 2 are 1 month old & 3 are 2 months old 💖 … names TBD. This old heritage farm was already set up with everything you could need to start flocks & herds, as it once was a huge cattle operation, hay fields, market gardens (massive greenhouses & garden fields for days), coops & chicken tractors galore, storage & outbuildings, working stations, endless equipment, etc. In all honesty, I’d been on the fence about adding birds with the extra work, when buying farm fresh eggs is sooo easy here in the Cariboo but, seeing as I’m home running the homestead .. felt about time to scoop up a handful of our own to raise & praise. I’m not the biggest poultry 🐓 gal but I’ll learn & be very grateful in months time when the laying 🥚 🍳 begins. 🎃PUMPKIN SOURDOUGH LOAF🎃 1. Prepare dough as you normally would. 2. Cut 4 cotton baking strings/twine about 12 inches long, soak them in water for a few minutes. 3. When time to bake, apply the 4 cotton strings in a cross cross pattern while dough is still in the proofing basket. 4. Place the parchment paper onto of the strings and carefully clip onto surface. 5. Connect all of the strings and tie them in a knot on centered, on top of the loaf. Cut any excess string off. 6. Score the loaf, I like to do 6 shallow cuts on both sides of all of the strings. 7. Bake the loaf as normal. 8. Once loaf is finished and cooled, cut the strings and pull them all off. 9. A busy week on the homestead!!!! This past week we installed a new hardscape feature around the spigot to help manage water runoff and separate the future pollinator garden from the main garden bed! In addition we seeded the greenhouse for rainbow carrots, kohlrabi (it’s good I promise), and golden beets! Should have some sprouting later this week! In the past year, my family and I have come face to face with the challenges in life and left us feeling defeated. Every year for Mother’s Day, all I want is an “easy” day and a picture with my family before church. • This year, we have some sicky kids, so we have to skip church this morning 😔 • And because of the sickness and change of plans, it made for a bit of reluctancy within the family to take this picture. • And though it’s not perfect…some kids grumpy, some not smiling, some sick, most wearing their “day 2” play clothes….all of us needing haircuts and some grooming 🤣…it is to me. 🥰🫶💕 • You’d be amazed how tricky it can be to get us all together for a picture. • It’s often like herding turtles. • And I can’t imagine how it will be in the coming years, since now we have kids graduating and leaving the house too 😭💕 • So I am so grateful we were able to pull it together for Mother’s Day this year. • This special annual gift of mine. • This real-life moment captured in time. 💕💕💕 • This is our life. Not perfect. And a bit messy. • You won’t find perfectly curated images here. We don’t all wear matching linen outfits all the time (though that would be awesome if we could afford to do that! 🤣). We wear thrifted clothes. Drive used cars. Our farmstead is functional…though not super aesthetic. I’m not a professional photographer. And I meant it when I said we aren’t about current trends. • But what we are…is super close. Family inclusive. We love each other BIG and being around each other is our favorite thing to do. We do life together and rely on each other. We have fun together, cry together, and pick each other up when one of us is down. We’re one big unit. Working as a team. All of us sharing roles to keep our farm and business going. So, as I was finishing up construction for chickens and ducks, I noticed something tiny peeking out from under a bush near my backyard. So we got the car and I was a bit surprised, but as I watched, I saw it carefully scampering through the grass. It was a baby fox! Now, don't panic, my animal-loving friends. This little guy isn't in any danger and poses no threat to my feathered friends. In fact, he seems quite cautious and is minding his own business. His small size suggests he might be a kit or vixen - basically, a baby fox. It's always exciting to spot these little creatures in the wild. So remember, if you ever spot one in your backyard or neighborhood, resist the urge to approach or feed them unless you're trained and prepared to do so safely.
