Last month I shared a beautiful bird nest that a momma bird had crafted right outside my front door. You can look at posts a few down to see it with the three tiny eggs there. New Life! The heat has been staggering, birds taking shade early and resting. A happy surprise was the neighborhood Red Shouldered Hawks just down the street and their two cute young! Tucked high up in our old oak trees, you could peer through the canopy and see them looking down at you. Nature said, don’t give up there’s still beauty to be seen! 🪶These hawks breed in late winter through spring (January-May), building nests in trees near suitable foraging habitat such as pastures, roadsides and lawns. 🪶Nests are not very large and are usually constructed in the fork of trees where tree limbs meet under the leaf canopy. If a breeding pair successfully raises young at the nest site, they will return to that same site year after year. 🪶Breeding behavior includes the male soaring and calling while he dives towards the female before landing on her to mate. 🪶Once she lays 2 to 5 eggs, both parents incubate them. Eggs hatch in about a month. 🪶Both parents feed the hatchlings, with each parent leaving the nest to hunt short distances and returning with food. 🪶Chicks mature quickly, within about a month and a half, before making their final flight off the nest to establish their own territories as fledglings.

Robin's Nest I let a robin built it's nest in a wreath on my front porch a few weeks ago. I have been photographing the nest since it was just 4 small blue eggs in the bottom. They hatched about a week ago and they are growing incredibly fast. With no macro 3D rig, I tried several cha-cha's today an this one came out best. I have a front surface mirror and I guess I could try that too. Maybe I'd get a better DOF by using the mirror and standing back a bit. At any rate, I feel like a have a stake in the game now, so I'm making sure to monitor them. Well, some sad news. It appears Momma Quail ditched her babies. There were 13 this morning and it appears 6 somehow jumped out of the planter after mom split. The dessert is cruel. They’re probably goners. However, we saved the 7 remaining ones after rushing to the tractor supply store and picking up everything we need to raise them. Now, mortality rate for chicks in the wild is about 85%. Under human care, it’s possible we might lose them all even if we do everything right. We’re committed at this point. It’s Western Bluebird season. This nest box is affixed to the end of my barn and despite (or maybe because of?) the large crack down one side, it has been my most popular box year after year. There usually are three or more broods hatched, with lots of help from aunties, uncles and cousins, and everyone carries on despite some rude intrusions from the barn owner. I couldn’t quite see if there are three or four babies in this photo, plus an egg. Found these little gems in my yard today. I’ve suspected a mama mockingbird was either making a nest or possibly feeding some babies & I was correct. They are precious & so neat. It was fun showing Nova but when I was telling Seth about them the symbolism wasn’t lost on me. Four baby birds. Four little angels. This week is always really painful. A reminder of not only being without my mom (she’s not dead just not a part of my life) but also without my children. I needed a reminder, a sign, that they are always with me. Wondering what the feet of a Clapper Rail fledgling look like? Take a look! Clapper Rails are extremely reclusive and usually identified only by their distinctive clattering cackle, so this fledgling surprised photographer Michael Riccio when it emerged from the marsh grass by a New Jersey tidal creek. 🐥 Males build elevated nests—with ramps to allow easy entry—in clumps of vegetation to avoid tidal flooding, but even eggs submerged during extremely high tides can still hatch. Clapper Rails brood their young and carry them on their backs when crossing deeper water. Once the chicks reach one week old, the adult male and female separate, each taking responsibility for half of the nestlings. Clapper Rails fledge after 6 weeks but can’t fly until 10 weeks, when they look nearly indistinguishable from adults. Michael submitted this endearing photo to last year's Audubon Photography Awards.
