Purple sunbird male The breeding male is a metallic blue and purple overall with maroon feathers on the breast. The female is olive above and yellow below. The nonbreeding male of this species is primarily olive-brown with blackish upperparts and yellow underparts with blue-black band running down the throat and chest. Females can be distinguished from female Purple-rumped Sunbirds by its yellow (not grayish) throat. Seen in pairs, feeding chiefly on nectar, but they also take insects. Breeding males display by fluttering their wings in front of females while singing. They are found in gardens, cultivated areas, and forests. The Western Quoll (Chuditch) used to be one of the most widespread predators in Australia. They occupied about 70% of the Australian landscape.⁠ ⁠ Unfortunately, the Western Quoll is now extinct across 95% of its former range.⁠ ⁠ In 2023, Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) began their reintroduction of quolls into their Mt Gibson Sanctuary in WA. And there is now hope on the horizon!⁠ ⁠ Recently they discovered traps that had been sprung closed, but with no intruder inside the trap. This was puzzling to the AWC team at Mt Gibson Wildlife Sanctuary so they investigated further.⁠ ⁠ And four cheeky young quolls – born last year – were discovered climbing around a trap, after a camera was set up to find out what was going on. ⁠ ⁠ The young quolls had been climbing up and around the trap. And they were setting the trap off - but had not been going into the trap take the bait.⁠ ⁠ The great news is that there has been an addition to the Quoll numbers in the Sancturary. This exciting discovery holds hope for growing numbers in the years to come.⁠

The Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) is the 2nd largest bird species in the world after the Ostrich and is native tot the scrublands and arid grasslands of the Australian mainland. A cultural avian icon of Australia, these fast omnivores have soft brown feathers and can run at around 48 km/h. They eat acacias, grasses, insects, spiders and other small invertebrates and swallow small stones to aid within digestion. These diurnal animals spend their days preening, foraging, dust bathing and resting during nighttime. They pant as a form of cooling off in the Aussie heat and during the summer months form breeding pairs between December and January. Happy Wrensday everyone 🐦 This is a pair of blue splendid fairy wrens I woke up to just outside my window in the little log cabin I was staying in down south last year. Australian wildlife… 🌿🐨 --- Coming to Australia was never a part of my plan. When I left Canada, I was leaving for less than a year of travel with my beautiful friend Alyson [name twin!] and we were going to travel through Southeast Asia and then head to New Zealand. Fast forward 14 years and here we are! I can honestly tell you I was not expecting to catch an Eastern Brown today. It’s was lightly raining when this phone call came through about a dog and a snake having a stand off in Diddillibah. The dog was taken to the vet for a check up and thankfully wasn’t bitten. I checked over the snake and it didn’t have a mark on it either. That’s a huge win. This snake is just about to shed its skin so its vision isn’t the best. It could sense the vibrations of me lightly walking towards it, so I had to basically jump to get this snake before it disappeared into thick bush. It was fast, but I was faster. Striated Pardalote Finally I got a highly detailed shot of this tiny species after having a close encounter. Unfortunately, over instagram you won't see all the details. As seen in the 2nd shot, the bird landed on the perch to check out a tree hollow. Since the perch was above the hollow, the bird needed to flip upside down to get a good view 😊 The perch was so thin I thought it was bark until I reviewed the photos. 🐾 We are very lucky in Australia to have such unique and special wildlife. . Unfortunately, we removed this beautiful big boy from the road and it appeared that he had been recently hit by a car. . A few ways you can help our wildlife: - drive slowly and stay alert when driving in high wildlife areas, like National Parks and at dawn or dusk - don't leave rubbish around your campsite or feed wildlife (this encourages animals to rely on humans for food, potentially attack people whilst seeking food and some human foods aren't healthy or safe for animals) - if you notice injured or sick wildlife, call the local wildlife authority so that it can be rescued and treated appropriately - if it is safe to capture a sick or injured animal, take it to a wildlife carer or veterinarian immediately (waiting will only increase suffering and complications without treatment) - if you notice a deceased marsupial by the road, stop if it is safe to do so and check for pouch young (common marsupials include wombats, kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, bandicoots and possums) - leave out a bowl of water for wildlife, away from cats or dogs, during hot weather and heat waves . . . . . #wildlife #australianwildlife #wildlifeveterinarian #wombat #australia #vettips #vetadvice #wildlifecare #WIRES #wildlifevictoria #travelaustralia #roadtripaustralia #nationalpark #campingaustralia #vetinavan

A relatively small king brown / mulga snake from Western Australia, foraging by the roadside. An Eastern Spinebill from earlier in the year at the beautiful Wilsons Prom. Spotted this guy from afar while I was supposed to be capturing some behind-the-scenes footage for an upcoming podcast about climate change resilience in our national parks.
