The Maldives Archives 💎 These glassy, crystal waters are home to some friendly mantas and the cutest sharks out there. It was heartbreaking to see the state of some of the shallow reefs in the atolls, but the megafauna restored my faith somewhat in the health of the ecosystem. Not to mention the scenery and tones of these waters was truly breathtaking. The double edged sword of any photographer’s existence is the never ending editing pile! I’m beyond grateful to be able to shoot so much these days, but I do wonder if I’ll ever “complete” my hard drives… Who can relate? A real showstopper in full bloom, fringe tree (Chionanthus virginicus) not only looks incredible, but its light, sweet fragrance is pleasant as well. When flowering, it’s not hard to see why the genus name comes from Greek words meaning snow and flower, as the tree is covered in a flurry of delicate white petals. Grow fringe tree in full or part sun in well-drained soil, where it can reach 12-20 feet tall. Come see this spectacular plant in bloom now at Mt. Cuba!

Bothriechis deriva de las palabras griegas "bothros y echis" que significa "foseta" y "víbora, “referencia a la característica de estos viperidos de poseer fosetas termoreceptoras. Bothriechis se lleva la imagen de "víboras arborícolas" del Neotrópico, presentes desde el sur de México, Centroamérica y el norte de Sudamérica (Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador y Perú). En Costa rica ocurren 5 especies de las cuales "Bothriechis nigroadspersus" anteriormente considerada "Bothriechis schlegelii" y "Bothriechis supraciliaris son muy parecidas, sin embargo se pueden diferenciar por distribución, coloración y patrón de manchas. Ambas especies son muy cercanas, "supraciliaris" fue la primera especie en pertenecer al clado "schlegelii" después de que se redescribiera y validara "supraciliaris" en 1998. Tuve la oportunidad de conocer esta especie gracias a la reubicacion de este hermoso ejemplar por @herping_chirripo, haciendole fotos con @baru_photography.cr y @herpetofauna_de_osa notamos que era muy tranquila, como cualquier Bothriechis, pero esa mirada creaba una tension que desde abajo me sentí intimidado. The Kaikoura Fur Seal Colony experienced a significant mortality event at the beginning of this year. Recent estimates suggest that an adult population of around 2,000 fur seals inhabits the area. That’s about one percent of the species, which probably numbers around 200,000 animals across New Zealand and Australia. This makes the fact that an estimated thousand young seals died in the area a stark reminder of how fragile the species is. Between September and February, starvation seems to have affected breeding animals across the colony. The prevailing belief is that warmer waters caused fish to dive deeper, forcing seals to travel further and deeper to feed. This undoubtedly increased adult mortality at sea, but the real cost was borne by the young animals on the shore. Females who cannot find enough food stop feeding their pups, while pregnant females often experience premature births or stillborn pups. It’s believed that warmer oceans are beginning to cause ecosystem collapse off the coast of Kaikoura as fish stocks are impacted by global warming. It seems likely that the effects will be felt long beyond the summer breeding season. Fur seals that didn’t put on blubber in the summer will likely struggle in winter. Increased mortality among adults from having to travel further to find food will mean fewer animals capable of breeding in future seasons. Even more concerning is that the impacts are not stopping there. Penguins and seabirds also seem to be affected by the loss of fish stocks. The ring necked pheasants aren't usually this cooperative but I was lucky enough to have spent about 30 minutes with this guy as he'd get up on the log and look around, call and then hop down to feed and then repeat the process. La Mariposa 88 (Diaethria marchalii dodone) es también llamada 89 ó 98, es una especie originaria de los bosques húmedos tropicales desde México hasta el norte de Argentina. Su nombre común se debe al diseño en sus alas posteriores que se asemeja al número 89 o 98. Las orugas se alimentan de plantas tropicales pertenecientes a la familia del olmo, de Sapindus y Trema. Los adultos se alimentan de frutas en descomposición. En muchos países, encontrar esta especie es un signo de buena fortuna, ya que el número 8 está asociado en una multitud de culturas a la buena suerte. Visited @cowolfcenter - Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center - and had the pleasure of meeting one of my favourite beings on the planet - the great wolf. These wolves (and a few wolf dogs) are all rescues. Most of them come from the illegal pet trade, rescues from animal cruelty, and fur farms. They are ambassadors for their species 🐺 and help to educate the public about the keystone role of wolves in ecosystems and the protection they so desperately need and deserve! Inherently, wolves are graceful, intelligent, and wonderfully social more-than-human beings. It would be catastrophic to lose these majestic creatures, and to only be able to witness them behind a fence. Conservation-Education-Preservation. Last Friday, while in Southern France with my Elena, we were able to finally see the midwife toad (Alytes obstetricans) doing its most famous thing: the male carrying his eggs for the whole time of development! It was since I was a child that I hoped to see one and until that Friday night I never even saw an adult one! Before, I could find some tadpoles, and I even heard the calls, but no adults, not to mention a male with eggs. Usually, our guide, Tarry Butcher, would turn the vehicle off around wildlife to reduce their fear and to create less vibration for photographers but this time he kept the fan running. As it turns out, rhinos have extremely poor eyesight and this one almost walked right into our vehicle. Anguis fragilis. Not a snake, but a true legless lizard. Ovoviviparus and "intelligent" (within the reptile world), this species has a long lifespan, known to live over 50 years in captivity. Their breeding season occurs between April and June. 📸African Savanna Elephants: Jabali and Tsavo 🐘African elephants will use their tusks for a number of different tasks. Pushing over entire trees, stripping the barn off of trees, self defense, sparring, and digging are a couple of the most common. Their tusks are technically teeth but grow outwards so significantly due to evolutionary needs in their environments. 🐘Elephant are the # 1 preferred source of ivory because they’re the most dense; the pulp (blood supply, etc.) within an elephant tusk is minimal, therefore the vast majority of the tusk is pure ivory. This means more product can be made with less harvesting necessary; a “little” goes a long way. Hippos are a close second according to most sources as their tusks are also very dense but also much more difficult for poachers to target. 🐘An elephant’s tusks are dense and strong so THEY can use them, not so poachers can mutilate them and make trophies out of their teeth. Los machos de Pachyramphus aglaiae presentan un vistoso color rojo en el cuello, además de una cabeza notable, del cual surge su nombre común, cabezón degollado. Estas hermosas aves tienen una distribución bastante amplia en México, encontrándose prácticamente en todas las costas (salvo las de Baja California) y distribuyéndose hacia el centro de México. Construyen pequeños nidos de formas algo redondas. Suelen verse en pareja o incluso algunos machos y una hembra. The most rewarding turkey images I captured this season were not taken hunting turkey. This image, featured in the current issue of the NWTF Turkey Call Magazine was taken near Kanopolis Lake, Kansas as the research team at Kansas State University & Kansas Department Of Wildlife released tagged birds back into the wild. This is a moment I will never forget. The survival of wild Turkey means the world to me, and to have this opportunity to capture this moment was truly a blessing. Tufted ducks (Aythya fuligula) are medium sized diving ducks found throughout the UK, and a large part of the world. They are fairly common, found on many lakes, reservoirs and ponds. Tufted ducks are social birds - they tend to form large flocks in the winter. As they feed on aquatic invertebrates, they are important for control of invertebrate species. They are not a species of concern, with stable populations in the UK and elsewhere. The cheerful, showy yellow flowers of celandine poppy (Stylophorum diphyllum) turn into the fuzzy, oblong fruits featured in yesterday’s What’s That Wednesday photo. Each pod contains numerous small seeds, which are dispersed by ants. Native to woodlands, hence its other common name of wood poppy, this plant adds a pop of color in early spring to shade gardens with rich, moist soil.

One year ago today, grizzly bear 399 made her first appearance of the year, and more excitingly, with a new cub. When she finally came out I had been in the park for about a week, and I began to wonder if I would miss seeing her before needing to return home. I also began to feel that there was some tension building among her fans as to whether she would come out at all as she would be 27 years old last spring, which is above the average age of a grizzly bear. Well, she once again defied the odds as she wowed the crowd that evening with her new cub of the year, or COY, who has now been named Spirit by the local community. It was also a well-timed experience for me as it was my last night in Grand Teton National Park as I had to head home the next day. It was a great experience for sure to see them both, and as I’m here in Grand Teton National Park this week, I had the opportunity to see both of them briefly last night. I’m hoping to get another chance over the next few days to see them again and I will certainly share any photos I get. Eastern black swallowtail caterpillar, first instar, on fennel plant in my backyard habitat oasis in Virginia. Black swallowtail caterpillars have 5 instar stages before they pupate. At each instar stage, the caterpillar feeds on the host plant. As the caterpillars grows in each instar stage they shed their skin to allow growth to change in the instar stage. The black swallowtail caterpillar looks different in each instar stage as the transform to the final fifth instar which is the full grown caterpillar. This lens (the @sonyalpha 50mm f1.8) is the cheapest lens I own. It cost me CDN$200, used (but in really great condition). It has quickly become my favourite lens. So small, so light, and (to me at least) seems to produce incredibly sharp and beautiful images, with lovely bokeh. It’s now getting a run for its money. I’m the proud owner of the 90mm f2.8 macro lens from Sony, and I’m having so much fun using it. I’m a while away from posting those images, but standby for them. The latter lens, however, is so much heavier than the nifty fifty. And I think it’s how truly handheld I can be with the 50mm that draws me back to that lens. 📸Western Lowland Gorilla: Lily 🦍Typically, females will leave their natal troop when they are around 8 years old to seek breeding opportunities elsewhere. Lily’s the outlier as she is nearly twice that age and Gino’s oldest daughter of the 3 still at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. 🦍Perhaps because of her extended time with Gino, or maybe because of her individual personality and also Gino being her father, Lily takes after Gino and emulated many of his behaviors. Probably because she does not view Azizi and Kashata as competitors as other females within a troop would view one another. Instead, Lily has very much mastered the assertive walk and look that her father uses to watch over his troop. 🦍Did you know? “Gorilla” means “hairy human” in ancient Greek. Bisher habe ich nur 2x ein Hermelin sehen können. Zum fotografieren, hat es nie gereicht. Nun hat meine Kamerafalle eines erwischt… Wahrscheinlich ist es durch das Geräusch des Auslösers aufmerksam geworden. Hermeline haben im Winter ein weißes Fell…um sich im Schnee zu tarnen. Problem ist, wenn kein Schnee liegt, ist das weiße Fell eher kontraproduktiv…Leider ist der Klimawandel schneller als die Anpassung der Hermeline.
