This image would not have been possible with film, or even with digital cameras, until the invention of software that combines several exposures together in order to get front-to-back focus. At 72mm, which was the framing that worked the best, I would not have been able to get the depth-of-field I needed to cover the distance with just one frame. Der Lake Powell ist ein Stausee in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika und liegt rund 350 km nordöstlich von Las Vegas im Grenzgebiet von Utah und Arizona. Er entstand Mitte der 1960er Jahre durch Aufstauung des Colorado an der Ostseite des Grand Canyon und entwickelte sich auf Grund vielfältiger Freizeitangebote um den See und zahlreicher Sehenswürdigkeiten im Umland zu einem beliebten Urlaubsziel. Niederschlagsarme Jahre und eine verstärkte Wasserentnahme lassen den Wasserpegel des Sees seit Jahren stetig sinken. (Quelle: Wikipedia) Das Foto stammt von 2011. Curtain of Power. So much water flows over Yosemite Falls when it's either warmed up too soon (in Jan/Feb) or in springtime with the snow melt that begins. At the height of spring melt, it may be pouring about 2500 gallons per second over those cliffs! It is unfathomable that by August there is only a trickle left, when you stand and watch the volume of water flowing in April/May. Yet the falls is fed by Yosemite Creek, which is fed entirely by snow melt, and it truly does run out of water by late summer (typically). I'm glad I got to witness this raw power on a windy day when the wind blew the falls into a wider ribbon of water. I waited for the 'water bombs' as I call them, in the right side of the frame. The night before the now-famous Aurora showing, we headed down to the shores of Mono Lake to make some compositions that we would then composite with the Milky Way sky once it rose above the horizon. We were not too hopeful for a clear sky, however, as clouds were moving in on us. Yet I rather liked the clouds and how they revealed stars in the gaps. Very little moonlight to light the foreground, just enough. The warm light on the horizon is from tow light reflecting off the clouds, and it added a nice feeling to the image. My goal is to try and express the mood of night in my images. I was 'alone' in my thoughts and feelings, even though Jed and Lewis were nearby, photographing. It's times like this that I feel so small in this universe! These types of images are relatively new for me, and I'm having fun experimenting and learning all the processing techniques! Sony A7RV, Sony 20mm f1.8 lens @ 1.8, 20 seconds, which is a tad too long in hindsight for stars to not be moving. 10-15 seconds worked better. Back in 2023, Jason the Cloud Gardener created the Cloudy Alley which was displayed at the RHS Tatton Park Flower Show. I’ve been digging the Nikon Z50 crop sensor camera I picked up. It’s a great little piece of technology. I wanted something smaller and lighter for hiking. Being familiar with the Nikon buttons and menus I decided to stick with the brand. The mirrorless technology is new to me and is pretty slick. 🦋 Veldparelmoervlinder (Melitaea cinxia). Deze soort is ernstig bedreigd in Nederland. Vorig jaar heb ik ze kunnen fotograferen en daar was ik erg blij mee! De vliegtijd is nu maar dit jaar heb ik helaas geen tijd om ze op te zoeken. Dus volgen er wat beelden van vorig jaar. 🇬🇧 Glanville fritillary (Melitaea cinxia). This species is critically endangered in the Netherlands. Last year I was able to photograph them and I was very happy with that! Bothriechis deriva de las palabras griegas "bothros y echis" que significa "foseta" y "víbora, “referencia a la característica de estos viperidos de poseer fosetas termoreceptoras. Bothriechis se lleva la imagen de "víboras arborícolas" del Neotrópico, presentes desde el sur de México, Centroamérica y el norte de Sudamérica (Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador y Perú). En Costa rica ocurren 5 especies de las cuales "Bothriechis nigroadspersus" anteriormente considerada "Bothriechis schlegelii" y "Bothriechis supraciliaris son muy parecidas, sin embargo se pueden diferenciar por distribución, coloración y patrón de manchas. Ambas especies son muy cercanas, "supraciliaris" fue la primera especie en pertenecer al clado "schlegelii" después de que se redescribiera y validara "supraciliaris" en 1998. Tuve la oportunidad de conocer esta especie gracias a la reubicacion de este hermoso ejemplar por @herping_chirripo, haciendole fotos con @baru_photography.cr y @herpetofauna_de_osa notamos que era muy tranquila, como cualquier Bothriechis, pero esa mirada creaba una tension que desde abajo me sentí intimidado.
