We have 4 eggs incubating. 2 eggs are from a Vermont farm and are labeled 19 and 20. 1 egg is from New Jersey and is the lightest shade and the smallest of them all. 1 egg is from Texas and is the biggest egg of them all and is marked wirh a "J". The Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) is the 2nd largest bird species in the world after the Ostrich and is native to the scrublands and arid grasslands of the Australian mainland. A cultural avian icon of Australia, these fast omnivores have soft brown feathers and can run at around 48 km/h. They eat acacias, grasses, insects, spiders and other small invertebrates and swallow small stones to aid within digestion. These diurnal animals spend their days preening, foraging, dust bathing and resting during nighttime. They pant as a form of cooling off in the Aussie heat and during the summer months form breeding pairs between December and January. Heading back to where I was staying late in the day, after climbing Toolbrunup Peak, I was glad to be driving slowly as I came around a bend in the road to be greeted with a flock of about 10 adult Emus. They left the road as I approached, but stood and posed while I got to take this photo 👍 Emus (Dromaius novaehollandiae) are a widespread large flightless bird, found across most of mainland Australia. Originario de Australia, esta majestuosa ave es el segundo más alto del mundo, solo superado por el avestruz. Aunque no puede volar, su imponente presencia y su capacidad para recorrer grandes distancias la convierten en un verdadero tesoro de la naturaleza. Características clave: - Altura: Alcanza hasta 2 metros de altura. - Peso: Puede pesar alrededor de 45 kilogramos, lo que lo convierte en una de las aves más pesadas. - Comportamiento: Estas aves son nómadas, capaces de recorrer grandes distancias al trote e incluso correr a velocidades de hasta 50 kilómetros por hora durante varios kilómetros. The first six P's are imperative in your quest to reach a level that you're happy with in your art, but 7th P helps occasionally too. 😄 As with so many others, my artistic journey started when the Covid lock down was enforced and I was at home full time caring for my kids and managing their schooling. I spent countless hours finding artists that I admired on platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, and watched countless videos on their techniques. From each artist I gained an insight into new techniques and ideas, which helped me to build upon the style I was aiming for. The style I employ is a scientific style, which makes use of my scientific training i.e. the emphasis is on the organism as hand, it includes all relevant morphological features, and there is no background to confuse things. This is a style that has been used for centuries in scientific publications. This style also allows me to easily overlay the organism into graphic design projects, like some of the things I've designed for the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater and Friends of Leadbeater's Possum (swipe to view). I'm at a level that I'm relatively happy with now, but having said that I am still learning and there is still a lot of room for growth. I don't think anyone ever stops learning. I'm aiming to bring out some online art workshops soon. Emus are endemic to Australia and are our largest bird; often mistaken for Ostriches, which are not Australian and are slightly larger. As such Emus are the second largest bird in the world, travelling at sprinting speeds of up to 50 kph. The males are smaller than the females. They are flightless and can be found throughout most of mainland Australia. Subspecies existed in Tasmania, and on King and Kangaroo Islands, but these were wiped out after settlement in 1788. They are not currently a threatened species. Dr Melanie Birtchnell inspired me to illustrate this species to compliment her up coming industry courses titled 'Biodiversity Planning in Victoria'. Baby dinosaurs coming soon!!! 🦖🥚 These beautiful eggs are the beginning of my next adventure in animal keeping… raising emus! 😍🥳😁 The emu is the 2nd tallest bird species in the world, and amongst the top 5 heaviest, standing around 5.7 feet tall on average, and weighing in at over a hundred pounds. Emus lay large blue-ish green eggs that weigh between one to two pounds on average, and are equivalent to around one dozen chicken eggs!! This batch of eggs carries the potential for a variety of colors, beyond the normal wild type variation. There’s eggs for guaranteed blondes, and eggs with the possibility of hatching out white, blonde, and/or standard chicks. I can’t wait to see what hatches.
