Family Outing I've been watching this pair of grebes since the beginning of the year. I caught them doing their courtship back in early January but then the lake froze over and they left for a couple of weeks. I was worried they would find a new place to build their nest but then suddenly they were back and before you knew it they were on a nest with eggs! The first egg hatched the weekend before easter and by good Friday all four eggs were hatched and they were on water. I've been trying to get out to see them when I can, it's always tricky photographing these as they like to float out in the middle of the lake which puts them at quite a distance. For a change the wind has helped as it's meant they've stayed closer to the shelter of the trees/nesting area and therefore closer to where I can see them. Conditions still proving tricky at times; either no light from thick cloud or bright reflections caused from bright sunlight, not to mention wind causing choppy rippling water, but it's all part of the challenges of wildlife photography! With the two latter things playing part on this paricular day I went with a high key exposure to try and rid any glares or ripples and highlight just the family and their beautiful feather colours and patterns. Watching one parent act as a raft for their young whilst the other goes off and comes back with small fish for the young to eat, it simply never gets boring, I could watch them all day. The young are about 11 days old in this photo taken last Thursday, one is now already too big to fit on and soon all the grebettes will be swimming on their own and learning to fish for themselves, they grow up so fast! 🥹 This is the earliest brood there's been on the lake for as long as I can remember but I suppose the seasons and weather changes are affecting that. Kicking the Kids Out This great crested grebe mother had four chicks hatch a couple weeks ago. It was quite a sight as they don't often have four or at least they don't all survive past the first week. For the first few days once off the nest the chicks (humbugs as I call them) will raft on mums back. Every now and then however she will boot them off to get them into the water. As far as I know this is to ensure that the little humbugs get used to the water and learn how to swim before they are too big to sit on mums back anymore. To get them off she will try jiggling her body whilst sat on the water, this sometimes will disrupt the humbugs enough that they freely get off. If however they are comfy and stubborn and don't want to move then she will rise up and flap her wings forcing them to topple off. She does this in a less aggressive way than it sounds, she doesn't go too high, just enough that they can't hang on and are left to plop into the water gently. Just as you can see from this photo. It's quite fun to watch, I mean you do feel a bit bad for the humbugs as they are clearly comfy and warm on their mums back. But at the same time she can't afford for them to get lazy as they need to learn to swim and dive otherwise they won't last long. To watch them topple in the water and then cheep and chirp at mum is quite comical, you can imagine what they are saying! Intitially they don't stay in the water long, iy's a tricky time as they need to learn to swim but equally they are most exposed and at risk from predators when in the water, so they will quickly clamber back onto mum. Shot this image of a Clark's grebe and chicks while on a tour with Brian Caldwell @lakehodgesphototours on Lake Hodges. He is an expert on the grebes, their behavior, location and the lake. He took us to a perfect location to shoot the grebes with their chicks where I could include a colorful reflection in the image. There were a limited number of breeding pairs on the lake last year due to the unfortunate loss of many nests. I am hoping that some time in the future the grebes will be able to breed more successfully on Lake Hodges. ©Paul Shilling.
