Remarkably, they were the youngest team within the competition, surrounded by sixth form and college students. Review @deamatronaband @exchangebristol 8/5/24 It’s been quite the month so far for Irish duo Orláith Forsythe & Mollie McGinn, AKA Dea Matrona (which translates to “divine mother goddess” in Celtic mythology). Not only are they blazing a trail across the UK & Ireland on tour, but they’ve also dropped their debut album “For Your Sins”, from which the tour takes its name. To describe DM, imagine a Venn Diagram consisting of Fleetwood Mac, First Aid Kit, and Larkin Poe. Not a bad space to exist in, I’m sure you’ll agree. The Belfast-based dyad stepped onto the stage at a busy Exchange to a very warm welcome. This is the third time the band has graced a Bristol stage, and it’s clear that many in the crowd are here having been suitably blown away by DM’s previous appearances. The stage presence is playful, full of Irish charm, and Orláith & Mollie have a girl-next-door way about them that’s impossible not to connect with. As you can imagine, the brand new 12-track album features heavily in the setlist, making up 9 of the set’s 16 songs. If you think tracks such as “So Damn Dangerous” & “Wilderness” sound great on record, we can testify they sound phenomenal live. Renditions of “Stamp On It” and “Black Rain” showcase the depth of the album, while “Glory, Glory (I am free)” is still giving us goosebumps more than 24 hours later. It would have been easy for the band to simply play the album in its entirety and call it a night, but that previously mentioned playfulness was evident again as the crowd were treated to exquisite and fun covers of “Kiss” by Prince & Sophie Ellis Bextor’s “Murder On The Dance-floor”. We close out with the heavyweight of the album, “Red Button”, which is already pushing half a million streams. And of course, for those who’ve been with the band from the beginning, 2020’s viral hit “Make You My Star”. “For Your Sins” is such a strong album, to hear it so early and fresh after its release was an auditory kiss sealed by a duo that has no glass ceiling. 📸📝 @bristolnomad_gigphotography

At 8 on the dot the intro to Just Like Nothing On Earth comes on & away we go, the sound & lighting are both excellent, the band are on fine form after having around five weeks off since the tour finished, there are no signs of stage rustiness. All 4 band members are looking very smart in their Black attire, bass player & sole original member JJ Burnel looks & moves like a man half his age(72) Baz Warne vocalist & guitarist is on fine form & there is plenty of in house banter, just before The Raven JJ says a few words & dedicates this epic track to the sadly departed Jet Black & Dave Greenfield, it’s one of the many highlights of the night for me. Tonight is Keyboard player Toby’s 100th gig, both him & Jim Macaulay the drummer have effortly slipped into the very big shoes of both Dave & Jet and play their part in continuing the band, Toby does a fine job singing Genetix another of my favourite tracks. When you see a band on their 50th anniversary tour you wonder how many more times you will get to see them, this tour was only in total 13 dates, a deliberate decision to cut back on touring so to prolong the longevity of the band, on this showing there is plenty of life left in the band. The 2nd half of the set kicked off, suit jackets are now off & the band look more familiar, for a long term fan like me it’s classic after classic, for a band who have been going for 50 years the choice of songs for a set have been discussed to death on forums for a long, long time. Before we know it the band go off & then back on for the encore of Go Buddy Go & the obligatory No More Heroes, by now the majority of people are out of the seats & are standing, many have tried to get to the front of the stage but have been stopped by for me over zealous security, it’s just people wanting to enjoy themselves, even JJ tried to calm the security & explain what happens at a Stranglers gig. So to sum up another excellent Stranglers gigs, highlights for me were Down In The Sewer, Genetix, The Raven, 5 Minutes, Relentless, Threatened to name but a few. 📝 Simon Kent 📸 @dkent.photo

So what will the workshop involve? This workshop will be a nice afternoon blend of: ☕️Foraged teas (& nice refreshments) to nourish our soul & bellies 🌷Guided nature based explorations to help us attune to whatever is unfurling around and within us 🧸 Restorative yoga to help us digest the ripe ol energies of the season 🪞Seasonal reflections to allow us to appreciate where we’ve got to in our year so far, and gather what we may want to bring forward with us as we move into summer And of course in its most simplest form, a chance to be outside together, with each other (and ourselves), marking the season The idea is that this will be a chance to reground, reorient and re-energise before we spring roll into summer!
