I can't explain in words how much the fox fascinates me and why, so I'll show it. I found this skull years ago, it is damaged but perfect. Last year I was lucky enough to get my hands on a fox cadaver. It was also very damaged, most of the animal was already gone, given to nature and its inhabitants, but I was able to obtain a fair amount of leg and paw bones. I removed the rotting flesh. I smelled Death. It is a smell that no one forgets after inhaling it once. The Autumn season is a time I really like to focus on gratitude and connection to Spirit. There is abundance all around and I have been feeling that overwhelming sense of gratitude specifically for my home. This time last year we were under contract to purchase a home. If I’m being honest it was really a home I pictured myself in but was so desperate to get out of the living situation we were in we exhausted all options. That house purchase fell through and the debilitating shroud that covered me put me in a really dark place mentally. I felt stuck. I felt defeated. I look around today at this home and I feel nothing but peace. I no longer feel that immovable force of energy blanketing me in darkness. I can see light. I see my garden, nature and I see space to call my own. We see these things everyday and they become normal. It’s no longer incredible to many knowing we live on a floating ball that’s spinning around a fire ball while a silver ball spins around us. The changing of the seasons is expected. Birth is an everyday occurrence, mostly done in hospitals, and so and so on. The Autumn Equinox is almost here. I can feel the cool temperatures rolling in and the crispness in the air. My garden is retreating for the year with maybe one or two small harvests left before our first frost makes it’s appearance. We are descending into the darker half of the year retreating inward. ‘Tis the season for Apples! 🍎 Apple picking is one of my favorite Autumn activities. There is something so comforting and nostalgic about frolicking the orchards in the crisp air while snacking on a warm apple cider donut. Known as a food of the dead, apples have been recognized as a correspondence of not only the Autumn season, but of the sabbat we know as Samhain, also known as the Feast of Apples or the Witch’s New Year. It is believed on this day the Spirits roam the Earth with us. One tradition on this day was to bury an apple to help guide and nourish the roaming Spirits as they wander. St. John’s Wort🌿 I shared a bit of lore and magic last year when working with this plant ally. I was unable to find much of it anywhere, but this year it has been truly abundant right in my back yard! I feel I got to connect with it so much more this time around and was able to utilize it in my craft both magically and medicinally. I find in my craft when I am drawn to a certain plant it is usually for good reason. I use the app Picture This to identify my local flora and whenever I feel that pull look something up, I often find that the symbolism is in line with something I’m experiencing in my personal life. The time is upon us where the thin veil of Autumn has arrived and the energy is strong. This is a time where we may feel more inclined to celebrate and embrace Spirit. Especially those of our ancestors and loved ones. Communing with them, calling them forth and feeling their closeness. I thought I would share a peek into my personal work with my ancestors and loved ones and how I honor their lives and lineage as we prepare for the arrival of Samhain. Some of the ways I like to honor them is by holding a sacred space for them. I place their photos within the space, write prayers and sing their favorite songs. I always make sure to have fresh water and often share my personal bakes with them. I will practice divination with them in the form of tarot as well so that I may journal and reflect on lessons and reoccurring themes within our lineage that may be present in my own life currently. Mentions of this ritual are found in early Irish texts such as the Táin Bo Cúlaigne, An Fhiannaíocht (The Fenian Cycle 2nd Century CE), Senchus Mór (the oldest surviving written Gaelic law), and the Sanas Cormaic ( Cormac’s Glossary, credited to Cormac mac Cuileannáin, king-bishop of Munster, in 908 CE.) The Sanas Cormaic describes a ritual practice of “eating red flesh“, leading some folks to believe the draoíthe used Amanita muscaria or “Fly Agaric” mushrooms for this process. The literal translation of “red flesh”, however, suggests the flesh was that of a pig, dog, or cat. The text is unclear as to whether the Irish gods were called upon to watch over the draoí seeking visions or if other draoíthe watched over him as he slept. Chanting and singing (tenm laida) were part of the ritual, as was covering the participant’s face with their hands, seeking darkness or privacy in order to receive the visions. It’s important to remember that Druids were very secretive, and guarded their practices vehemently. Theirs was an oral tradition, and therefore we do not have first hand written accounts of their practices and rituals. Though the Sanas Cormaic outlines the ritual of Imbas Forosnaí, we are not certain if it was written by Cormac mac Cuileannáin or if it is composed of others writings and compiled by him. Therefore, we must take the description of this ritual with a grain of salt. For me personally, in my own practice, I use this information as inspiration for my personal rituals involving divination and clairvoyance, but I would not go so far as to claim I’m engaging in an Irish Druidic practice. However, I feel comfortable using the phrase “Imbas Forosnaí” when speaking with ancestral spirits, to indicate the enlightenment that I seek.

One of my biggest pieces of advice to my clients is to learn a method of divination. There are more options for getting clarity around a situation than you can throw a boot at. Coin or dice divination, card divination such as tarot or playing cards, geomancy, rune casting, scrying (By candle, water, flame, smoke), a pendulum, I Ching divination, mediumship, augury, etc. Build confidence with it. Pull a card each day, Answer even basic questions, Get comfortable working with them. You will be glad you did especially in times when you simply can't think clearly or see the next step necessary, or when you are summoning a spirit that you wish to ensure is the correct spirit. The Autumn season is a time I really like to focus on gratitude and connection to Spirit. There is abundance all around and I have been feeling that overwhelming sense of gratitude specifically for my home. This time last year we were under contract to purchase a home. If I’m being honest it was really a home I pictured myself in but was so desperate to get out of the living situation we were in we exhausted all options. That house purchase fell through and the debilitating shroud that covered me put me in a really dark place mentally. I felt stuck. I felt defeated. I look around today at this home and I feel nothing but peace. I no longer feel that immovable force of energy blanketing me in darkness. I can see light. I see my garden, nature and I see space to call my own. I'd wanted to make an account here just for the spiritual side of my life, as it's a part I don't share with everyone, and finally got around to it. So, hi. I'm Erica. Something woke up inside me that has manifested itself in creative writing during this spring season. Writing has always been a sacred ritual for me. A way to alchemize emotions into something beautiful and moving. Words hold power, and I had an amazing tarot reading that only validated how this practice empowers me. As a folk practitioner, I often refer to the astrological signs and the moon. My Appalachian ancestors believed in tuning into these rhythms to plan their gardening and farming. The success of their seeds and result of astrological timing. I adopt this approach into my magical practice for certain workings — to plant seeds, to water them, to harvest them and bear the fruits of my labor. By combining the power of written and spoken words during a Dark Moon under the stability of an earth sign, they take root deep in the soil for future manifestations. I wanted to share an incantation that I’ve used for such intentions that is open to being altered to fit your own practice.
