Spellwork for a friend. He needed some serious protection work done on his behalf. I spent sometime asking the Goddess I work primarily with to form a circle of protection around him, plus a dedicated protection spell jar working with each of my main Goddess as well as a jar asking for all of their help. As this is a good friend who is putting their life in danger to help others I used blood magic and offerings to my Goddess (using my own blood). This is not something I would do for anyone. It laid me low for sometime and I became ill due to the toll on my energies. However, my friend saying that he felt the protection immediately (it was several weeks before he could get the physical jars) made it all worth it. Sharing my small and simple Beltane altar. Last week was a crazy busy week at work to where a larger celebration wasn’t in the cards for me. Instead a simple altar showcasing the elements of the festival/day/holiday was perfect. I. My altar bowl I have a mini Maypole, a mushroom, malachite, rose quartz, and moonstone, plus rice for abundance and stones for Earth. The candle is Cerunnos (or a Satyr depending on your belief/thoughts) and a woman/nymph having a holiday appropriate celebration moment. There is also Freya and Odin idols/candles below for the balance of feminine and masculine energies. I lit the red and green candles as well as a small caldron fire (since I couldn’t have a bonfire) and meditated on the season and my goals/workings for it as well as gave thanks to the creation life forces and the Goddeses/Gods I walk with. The gorgeous Freya idol is hand carved by @pagan_store and the Odin and Cerunnos candles are from @babayagamagick (cannot recommend these two practitioners/vendors enough). The fire in my cauldron is an enchanting Abundance Fire from @talesfromthecoven. How did you celebrate Beltane? Beannachtaí na Bealtaine 🔥 This past weekend I headed out into the woods of Drenthe to celebrate Beltane with friends old & new. We spent the weekend in connection - with each other, the endless cycle of nature and our non-human-kin. Our feet got a little up close & personal with fire, but we were cooled down by abundant rain. We shared stories, tears, laughter, food and coffee. We also shared a beautiful ceremony on Saturday, celebrating the start of the light half of the year and making new commitments to ourselves. I had the greatest honour to do a handfasting ritual for @molanniek & @thomas_in_beeld , our May Queen & King. Their love and joy is heartwarming and inspiring to all ♥️🔥 and I'm so happy and grateful to witness it I'm still catching up on sleep 🤭 but I'm absolutely in awe of this weekend. The amazing people I get to meet and spend time with, the things we create and carry together and all the lessons I'm learning from people, spirits and nature. I love the similarities and contrast between Celtic and Nordic paganism. Usually my blogs are sorted between Nordic Old Ways versus New Age (New Age Norse paganism borrows a lot from other paths). Meet Beltane, the 8th and final doll in my Wheel of the Year series. Beltane is the Gaelic festival marking the beginning of summer and is associated with fertility and sensuality. Many Beltane rituals focused on honoring or appeasing the faerie folk, or the Aos Sì, since the veil between the world of the fae and our own is said to be especially thin this time of year and the fae would be particularly active, causing mischief. Large fires were built and people and cattle would walk between and around them for protection, sometimes leaping over the flames or embers. All the fires in the community would be doused and then re-lit from the flames of the Beltane bonfire. When the fires burned down, people use the ashes to sprinkle it over themselves, their crops and livestock. Feasts were common and some of the food and drink would be left as offerings for the faeries. Houses, buildings and livestock would be decorated with flowers as well as equipment used for milking and making butter, thought to offer protection. The May Bush, a small tree decorated with bright flowers, ribbons, painted shells, candles or rushlights, was a common sight and can still be found in some regions where the tradition persists. Many Beltane customs and traditions can be found in other historic celebrations around this time of year such as May Day. Some modern day Wiccans incorporate the May Day tradition of the maypole into their Beltane rituals, around which dancers often circle with ribbons, which may harken back to the May Bush. Beltaine Blessings from Heron Drums!
