It’s been a few years since I first made Rose beads and I’m itching to try it again now that I know what I’m doing. For Beltane season, I thought I’d share the process with you so you can make your own! Use at least a dozen Roses. Remove the petals and add them to a nonstick pan OR a cast iron skillet if you’d like a blacker bead. Pour just enough distilled water over to cover them. Simmer on medium heat, keeping it just under a boil, for about ten minutes. Add the mixture to a blender and blend thoroughly. You can’t do this too long. It’ll make the paste smooth and the beads stronger. Add the paste back to the pan and simmer the mixture on low, stirring often, for 30 minutes, twice a day, for at least 3 days. In between the simmerings, set the pan aside to cool and dry out some. We’re slowly cooking off the moisture. You’re going for a modeling clay type texture. Once you have the right texture, roll a pinch of Rose paste in your hand into a ball. The beads could shrink up to 40% when dry, so consider that. Skewer the bead onto a pin and stick into into a piece of styrofoam. I use T-Pins because they’re thicker. Smaller pins made the beads nearly unstring-able. Give the beads a little twist and move up and down the pin once a day until the beads are thoroughly dry. This keeps them from drying onto the pin and breaking. They’ll dry faster in the sun as well. Next, string them as you wish! You can sand them a bit or even add a little Rose oil. You don’t want to let the beads get very wet. A sprinkling is fine, but they will come apart in water. Unforeseen circumstances meant a lone ceremony in the garden instead of a trek into the woods. Depending on how you interpret it, Beltane may have been on the 1st, today, or it might be on the 7th. All I know is that despite being a Beltane baby who loves this time of year, I've never known such a low-energy Beltane season. I'm so very tired. Working toward deadlines and struggling with stress and mental health, I've not had much time to go and enjoy the cherry blossoms (that ended early this year) or the bluebells. I realised last night that I never even got round to unpacking my altar pieces from my bag after the Ostara ceremony 😱 I cleaned and cleansed it last night, and burned some white sage incense to try and raise some spiritual vibrations. It may have been low key, but I got something from it. I thought long and hard on the seeds I sowed the last 2 Beltanes, how those blooms were slow to emerge, but blossom they have done. I thought on how my deities tasked me on embarking on a new journey, and how so much happier I am for finally undergoing this. I admired the tenacity of my bloom in last year's storms, and asked for guidance in enduring the current and future storms to come. I burned hawthorn, cherry and bluebell incense, then when it was billowing fragrant smoke, I placed it on the ground in place of the teneigen and leapt over it. As a Priestess of the Goddess, last night, I followed the rhythms of the earth and the Aquarian Moon above as I honored the essence of the ancient Beltane celebration. I embodied life’s sacred dance by inviting the Divine Feminine and Masculine to my space. I cast a Circle and ignited the flames of transformation by kindling a sacred fire in my cauldron, allowing it’s spark connect with me with my heart’s fire. Beltane Blessings. A few years ago I set the intention that I would attend the Beltane Fire Festival in Edinburgh Scotland. 2024 seemed doable. Enough time to block it out and not book any weddings. Plenty of time to plan and come up with and make payments on a fabulous itinerary. Well God (aka: The Universe) certainly had other plans. Beltane, the celebration of the midpoint between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice, will be more unceremoniously observed from my backyard here in Coosaw Preserve. Perhaps we will have a bonfire and set some shit aflame. Maybe I will drink wine and if I drink enough, dance and wrap ribbons around a Maypole. Maybe, there’s still time. The night is young, but probably not. Your girl is exhausted. Instead of ruminating in fear of what’s yet to come, I have to believe there is purpose in caring for Justo. That there is meaning and a bigger contribution to the world within the small daily actions that seem so monotonous and insignificant. I have to find the joy in simple pleasures and steal away beautiful moments of time for myself. Spring is a glorious time! I know I am still lucky and #blessed. I know there is still greatness to come and though I don’t know when, I know I will be traveling the world again. I also still hold out for some cosmic justice that his home and land are no longer his. So Beltane Blessings everyone.
