We all talk about slow living. In addition to this we should also talk about slow witchcraft. Being a witch (or occult practitioner of any kind) isn't about constantly performing great rituals. It's an attitude to life starting with the small things. Go for a walk in the forest. Experience the change of seasons. Light a candle for your familiar. Create an incense blend - Burn this incense blend. Plant that seed. Harvest these herbs. Prepare your own tea. Create all these small moments through out the day to strengthen the connection to the Craft. We are living in a busy world with busy days and weeks full of busy jobs. Everything is happening too fast anyway. Slow it down. Your Craft isn't meant to add even more preasure and stress to yourself. It's not about achievement but about constant connection through little acts of devotion and growth over time at your own pace. I literally get an allergic reaction when I see people judging other practitioners based on the pace of their practice - especially in social media context. And there's another point: Many people seem to forget that social media only ever offers a glimpse into someone's life. For many reasons, I personally do not share every single ritual act here and never will and I'm pretty sure that most practitioners are like me. ~ Fearie Offerings On Bealtaine ~ Happy Bealtaine! It's that time of year at last! The sun is gaining strength and glowing more and more each day, the apple is in blossom and the roses are budding. The fertile land is waking up, and so are the many other areas of fertility and creativity 😉 This evening, my youngest daughter and I have completed our annual tradition of leaving a hand collected selection of flowers on the doorstep for the local land spirits and fae. All of the flowers were collected from our own garden. This was a piece of Folklore and Folk Ways passed down to me by my mother, who taught me that to leave 'themselves' (the fae) a gift of flowers on the doorstep would bring about their blessings upon the home and garden. The flowers had to be ideally collected from ones own garden, and if not your own garden, then collected on your way home from your last journey on Bealtaine/May Day (growing up, this was usually on our way home from school). The flowers are then laid on the doorstep at dusk and the door locked for the night- no going out after the locking of the door in case you disturb themselves on their visits and revelry and invoke their curses. However, if your door was kept shut, and the flowers left out, it was believed that the local fae would bless your home and garden. Especially the garden, where it was believed your crops or flowers would grow abundantly once blessed. I've come accross several versions of this lore. Some English, some Irish, and some of Irish descent from the vast diaspora that has spread accross the globe. What are your Bealtaine/May Day traditions? A snapshot from the preparation of a wick for a client, to be burnt as part of a larger working for employment. A long rice paper scroll was adorned with all manner of talismans and written charms to the purpose, alongside the client’s petition, and rolled while carefully laminating each layer with wax from candles offered to the spirits involved in the work. (FYI green onions are like the easiest thing to grow and will make almost any dish taste a little better) I have a vase with some flowers that were a little too petite to go on my altar so I stuck them here and they bring me joy. I highly recommend occasionally buying yourself flowers just because. I’ve got a mystery cactus growing that I’ve managed to keep alive for several years, and a Wendy’s cup with some chicken bones that are degreasing in some water and dawn dish soap, the tooth brush I use to scrub them between water changes. I’m currently drying some recently harvested dandelion and I have a few plans in the works for them already the first being an Alaruan conjuration. I know mandrake root is more typical but I feel dandelion makes more sense as it’s so abundant in my area and the plant spirit is one I am rather fond of. Every part of the dandelion plant is so giving and as an -American Traditional Witch- I think it connects me deeper with our genius loci and the spirit of the land I am on. I may upload a video about it, I may not. I’m posting this because I see a fair share of discourse around creator authenticity and the mixed feelings about “witchy aestheticism”. Coin amulet. I recently learned about an amulet from the Scandinavian trolldom tradition. You take a 1 crown coin (1 kr.) and make a hole in it, and thread it with a black cord. To make it magical, it has to be put in the mouth of a dead, but you must not touch the coin when you put it in the mouth of the dead. Afterwards, the amulet gives you the powers to see and communicate with spirits. The amulet will also protect you against evil spirits, bad luck, and against curses. I have made mine with a 2 crown coin (2 kr.) that I found between two small trees at the local cemetery by the western wall, so it comes directly from the earth where the dead rest. The nice thing with danish 1, 2, and 5 coins are that they already have a hole in the middle, so i dont have to think about making that. I see a lot of symbolic meaning with my version: light and dark, God and Devil, our world and otherworld, the horns of the folkloric devil.. you name it.
