May 7, 2024 Emergency surgery for Mandragora officinarum! ๐จ๐จ๐จ As summer is fast approaching and temps are rising up, my mandrakes are going back to sleep, one by one. We have also been having a pretty wet spring, so root rot is certainly an issue on my mind. I usually unpot dormant mandrakes to check on their health and growth progress. Checking their crowns for signs of rot is my first step to determine which root needs to get a thorough check immediately. As I was going through my newly dormant mandrakes, I noticed one of the officinarum roots had some soft tissue and rotting skin, which was a clear signal for me to unpot it for a thorough check. Lo and behold, there were some minor roots at the crown. But more alarming was one of the smaller roots was actually rotting and broke off from the main body as I unpotted it (Photo 2). There were also sections that felt a bit soft when squeezed (sign of beginning of root rot). I have also noticed some white wort-looking nubs on those soft sections. I ended up having to cut off the rotting parts. I then covered the root in cinnamon powder. Because of its anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties, I have had good success in saving my mandrakes from minor rot using cinnamon powder. I'm going to let the root air out a day or two before deciding whether to replant it or to dry and preserve it. This root is only a little over 2 years old, and it's been growing quite nicely, so I don't feel quite ready to harvest it yet. โข happened upon this stunning red trumpet while on a walk, Brugmansia Sanguรญnea, native to the Andes mountains in the North Eastern South Americas. All parts contain tropane alkaloids as you would expect from Brugmansia, and native South Americans have used this plant as an entheogen for centuries. This Angelโs flowers are not as large as the white variety, around 7-10cm diameter at the petals and didnโt seem to have a strong perfume, although that could be because it was daytime. These tiny delicate little flowers belong to a variety of Nightshade, one of my favorite plant partners. I have an entire garden on my property devoted to the native species that grows here in Arizona. But this little guy snuck into my herb garden somehow. A stray seed from a packet of something different I imagine. Nightshade, like other poisonous plants, is an excellent plant spirit to work with energetically. Especially when we need to be better about our boundaries. Working with flower essences and plant meditations allow us to access the wisdom of these plant allies without the toxic exposure. Henbane flowers are so fascinating, with that mix of deep purple and soft yellow. And they actually make decent dried flowers, retaining their soft yellow color and purple accents. Black henbane (Hyoscyamus niger) is one of the most famous poison plants in European witchcraft, particularly as an flying ointment ingredient. Black henbane was used as a flavouring in beer historically, but it was eventually replaced by hops during the late Middle Ages. Atropa belladonna vs. Solanum nigrum. I canโt count how often Iโve heard people in a panic thinking that theyโve had โdeadly nightshadeโ randomly pop up in their garden. The first thing to know is that here in Western Australia, our conditions are not such that belladonna seeds would germinate without very careful & deliberate pre-treatment and care. What is very common, and the more likely possibility is blackberry nightshade, or Solanum nigrum. The two are very easy to tell apart when you know what youโre looking for. As you can see in the picture, the flowers are distinctly different. The single, dark dusty pink bells of belladonna stand in stark contrast to the clusters of white star-shaped blooms of blackberry nightshade. Similarly, the berries of S. nigrum develop in clusters, whilst belladonna sit in solitude. Both plants are nightshades, which is surely where the confusion arises, and whilst this means they both have toxic elements, blackberry nightshade berries are actually edible, so long as they are well ripened. Most of the honey bees are staying put inside their hives, but I found this lady taking refuge from the storm inside a Datura wrightii "Moon Child" blossom... When honey bees out foraging, they will take note of the weather, and will try to rush home before any bad weather hits. But not all of them can make it home in time... If a honey bee gets caught in bad weather, she will try to find a safe spot to land and wait it out, just like this little lady here. And I am absolutely loving the protection this datura is offering. So many people misunderstand the true nature of Datura and her energy. Yes, she is poisonous and she can eff you up good if you don't know how to respect her. But she is also loving and protective, and she sure can heal (evidence can be seen in her role in medicines around the world). Mandragora autumnalis, 3 years old. Had a trip to Broken Bow, OK. For the solar eclipse. Over watered her. Came back and noticed a mushy leaf and a bit of rot at the base on the crown. The most likely culprit is bacterial soft rot? Thereโs quite a few bacteria strains.. which whatever the case. Rot sucks. I canโt risk my other plants getting infected. Better safe than sorry I always say. Removed her immediately, planter and all. Tossed the soil. Luckily Iโve been smart on cleaning tools and hands, but shit can happen fast. And Iโm paranoid. Deep cleaning with bleach, applying fungicide and insecticide to all plants to be safe for now. But soon will most likely go crazy and change the soil of all my plants and make sure to add beneficial mycorrhizal fungi, bone meal, Etc. blah. ๐ things can spread fast. I think my mistake was using some rain water a few weeks ago. Itโs so easy to introduce bacteria. Then trimming old leaves, it got in. If it is soft rot, usually Erwinia carotovora, it invades the vascular system of the plant. Itโs fatal. Iโll have to cull her to be safe. Keep applying bleach, let her dry, then alcohol every few days. Dry her out in salt. I canโt chop her up because risk of infection, not that Iโd have the heart to. While I could use her in malefic workings.. she will just have to be an emblem of my love. Maybe I can find a case for her. Display her. Idk. You live and learn. You grow with these plants. And again, shit happens. Itโs a continuous learning process. And you only grow more with experience, and failures. This is life, this is death.. this is nature. Rot, disease, they play their roll, have their own brand of beauty. As a wicked witch Iโm very familiar with such things, so canโt really be all that upset. April 10, 2024 Look at the size of these Datura wrightii flowers!!!! This is Datura wrightii "Moon Child", the datura from the Southern Utah desert. She's 3 years old now, has survived crazy freezes in the past 3 years. She dies back each winter, but comes back in the spring. "Moon Child" bloomed her first flowers of the season during Total Solar Eclipse, and these flowers are at least a day old (that's why they look a bit spent).
