My grandmother’s Lily of the Valley is flowering in the garden, wish I had time to paint it again. But I’m pleased that I managed to capture it in my previous sketchbook. Plants and memories are very intertwined for me, most have stories and this one always makes me smile. #happyplant #botanicalsketchbook #watercolour #plantpainter #lillyofthevalley #botanicalart #memories #naturepainter #gardenmemories #paintedgarden #sketching #botanicalart #floweringnow

Scottish Bluebells, Campanula rotundifolia. My first memory of arriving in NE Scotland when I was 24 was this little flower waving at me from the roadside verges as we sped by. I didn’t know at that time that I’d stay for over 20 years! So many beautiful flowers were to be found and painted but this one sticks with me always. I still love to paint small native flowers and the overlapping tangles of stems. I suppose they’re not the headline grabbing big flowers and I prefer to paint them life size, so maybe they go un noticed as paintings but this is just what I like…. Small things……there’s nothing better than spotting a little patch of wild flowers from a distance, then the excited approach! Thats something I never tire of. #scottishbluebells #harebell #scotishwildflowers #botanicalpainter #plantpainter #smallflowers #wildflowers #britishflora #aberdeenshire #naturepainter #watercolourpainter #watercolour #vellum #kelmscott #williamcowleysvellum #scotland #florascotia #flowersofscotland

Another dandelion from my sketchbook, maybe Taraxacum lamprophyllum…. I think someone told me that as I couldn’t work it out. Much more ‘spidery’ dandelion but it was the end of the season and going over, which is not the time for ID but I painted it anyway. From the Hamata section. Dark green slightly blotchy leaves with deeply dissected recurved lobes and terminal lobe is triangular, with a ‘woven’ red / green mid rib in part anyway. The scape is similar length to leaves, reddened, some bracts have a blue green pruinose appearance, red to purple in lower bracts with a white edge. Pollen is present in this deep yellow capitula. Did you know that not all dandelions have pollen? I could do a whole sketchbook on dandelions! #dandelion #taraxacum #dandelionseason #botanicalpainter #plantid #botanicalart #plantpainter #botanicalillustration #botanicalsketchbook #paintingnature #naturejournal

The deconstructed dandelion, from my sketchbook 2021. So many little parts to study in Taraxacum and so many species, so I can’t take parts from more than one plant, unless it’s the same species- but they’re so hard to identify and so similar. I don’t know what the species is here because that was before I discovered the wider dandelion world and I was completely ignorant. Anyway I believe there are 9 sections and I thought maybe this belongs to Hamata….. 🤔 although I’m sure someone will tell me that’s wrong…. Yeah that’s probably wrong 🤣 There’s a brilliant book published by the BSBI written by A J Richards, if you want to delve into the fascinating world of dandelion species….. I’m going to grab my copy now and check. April already! And time to paint Primula veris, commonly known as the cowslip. This is a lovely little plant seems to have made a good recovery from being fairly uncommon at one time. Following on from the sketchbook page in 2022, I’m hoping to complete this painting on vellum (second image). It’s still very early days with it and laying the very pale foundations first on this pale speckled skin, which has been stretched onto a board. It’s important to me to bring the painting up in stages rather than finishing any one part because that way I can manage the light and shade across the whole subject, this is particularly true when painting a subject with several leaves and stems, and for me it brings more cohesion to the piece. The plant I’m painting is considerably larger than the one in the sketchbook, and having observed the growth since completing the sketchbook page it’s clear to see the different size depending on the location and conditions, light, water, nutrients and competition, although some of it is no doubt down to genetics too ….plants like people are variable. There is a lot of variation though with flowers ranging from 9 - 15 cm diameter and height varying from 21 - 30cm - that’s a fair old difference between plants. But as a botanical artist it’s important to go for ‘typical’ and always check for herbarium type specimens and plant descriptions in Stace’s flora. It’s a bit of a long game with paintings, and so I like to work on them over a couple of years so that I can get to know them well, sometimes just looking at them. This is the best thing about being a plant painter and I don’t like to rush #plantpainter #botanicalartist #botanicalsketchbooks #watercolourist #watercolouronvellum #williamcowleysvellum #worksonvellum #paintingplants #naturejournal #skethbookstudies #paintersresearch #primulaveris #cowslip

Fritillaria imperialis time again. Here’s one I painted years ago alongside one of the accompanying study pages, the plant came from Chatsworth House and it was pretty stinky. I always make study pages and sketches before any painting because it saves time in the long run and takes away all the uncertainty…..well maybe not all of it but most of the uncertainty. Take a scroll through the images and see the dry palette too - that’s how I paint, lots of thin skins of paint and not so much water. Takes a long time to paint something this size on vellum, and I didn’t even have a desk or easel at the time ….. or even a chair! I’d moved many miles away from my former life and home to start over, and so it was painted sitting on the floor! I’d be crippled these days….. but guess where there’s a will there’s a way 🤣 #painterslife #crownimperial #springflowers #paintaplant #determined #paintingonvellum #fritillariaimperialis #paintinginwatercolour #botanicalart #botanicalstudypages #plantpainter #diannesutherlandart

Three warm yellows, plus one that’s cooler with greens. By now it’s probably pretty obvious which colours I use…… 💛 Plants are: left Celandine, top right, St John’s wort, bottom left Fritillaria imperialis ‘Lutea’ and bottom right Kōwhai. But what colours are used? #yellowflowers #paintyellow #naturepainter #botanicalart #plantpainter #loveyellow #colourpalette #yellowpalette

1/21/2024, 4:09:23 AM

Another yellow flower, this time the Dandelion, Taraxacum. I’ve painted various species and different stages many times, so four snippets here. It’s a warm yellow, but use Winsor lemon, for the cooler yellows on the light side, then Winsor yellow, cadmium yellow, permanent carmine for warmer yellows and perylene maroon mixed for shadows, that pretty much does the lot here with this yellow. Stick to the yellow and red palette and avoid blues and dirty colour mixes. Layer up those yellows! Keep it simple. #dandelion #yellow #springflowers #painting #watercolour #botanicalart #plantpainter #naturepainter #botanicalsketchbook #naturejournal #plants #paintplants #nativebritishplants #diannesutherlandart #botanicalartonline #colourpalettes

Here’s my finished sketchbook page, which began December 23rd and was forgotten about. Looks a bit washed out in the video, so swipe to the second image. Managed to finish it late last night. I deliberately chose four broken twigs, but I figure if they’re all different so the ‘rule of odds’ doesn’t really apply, and I only wanted these four because they were all so different, why include something I don’t want….it’s my sketchbook 😉 I loved the little ‘lollipop’ - like moss at the end of the twig. These were found twigs after the storms - lined up in a very orderly way, which isn’t something I’d normally do but figured the curves were nice it’s my ‘order out of chaos’ idea. There was an accident with this page because I made a huge brown splodge on it - I can’t believe I managed to get it off…. Not many papers will take that punishment, maybe only Saunders Waterford is up to it…. Or the stars were aligned. Wish I’d photographed the splodge, it went right across one of the twigs, maybe 6- 7 cm long and 3cm wide, can you see it? Now it’s onto the real 2024 sketchbook entries, so what next…… 🤔 Our ‘botanicalsketchdates’ project continues with my good friend @debbiecrawfordbotanicalartist and I think it’s into year 4… wow! Which also matches up with my four subjects here, I knew there was a reason….. there’s always a reason to follow your instinct. Starting the yellow theme. What better flower than Primula vulgaris, such a beautiful pale lemon. Here’s a ‘pin eyed’ group with the stigma showing at the mouth of the flower. Funny how I always seem to paint this pin type and seldom the thrum. The different arrangement facilitates cross pollination and it was one of the flowers that first grabbed my attention when I was young. So I’ve painted it many times over the years. It’s known as a bit of a tricky colour to paint and you have to go super easy on the shade colours, I use a dilute mix of cobalt blue and quinacridone magenta, it’s important not to overdo it and not to use too much blue (use the smallest amount) But you paint it too heavily and too uniform across the flowers it will look horrible and dirty and the same all over. So be sure to retain lots of white on the light side. Also I work pretty dry and controlled to create a little form with that shade colour, painting in some fine detail. Then I use lemon yellow nickel titanate , yup it’s opaque! But because the light value is so high - that doesn’t matter, also a little Winsor lemon too for darker yellow areas. It’s a pretty simple mix. I saw some flowering today… really lifts the spirits on a grey day #watercolour #primsose #primulavulgaris #botanicalart #plantpainter #yellowflowers #flowersforhope #wildprimrose #pinandthrumeye #floralmorphology #botanicalsketchbook #lemonflowers #mixingcolour

Now Sold. A few close up stages of the development of a leaf painting from one of my leaf tutorials. Underlying colour, layering to build colour, but keeping the light, painting the detail and leaving areas free from too much detail…. Avoiding scrubbing, lifting or hard edges. These are some the things to think about in a leaf like this reddened Rumex leaf. I don’t use any big washes when paining such leaves. Only the first layer, is a smooth blended wash onto a dampened surface - using different colours including the all important yellow and warmer and cooler reds but even that wash has no puddles of water. Much work is done painting into dampened areas and then damp, dry and drawing brush techniques are used in a very controlled way. Thats how I paint leaves, for me it’s all about control and frame of mind when painting…. And of course having the ‘right’ leaf positioned in good lighting is a must….when asked how long it took, don’t forget the time used finding and considering the subject before any painting starts…. It’s just as important to find the right subject. Yes I love painting leaves but if it’s not working…. I try again . This leaf is for now sale in my shop and includes the separate intermediate stages and colour notes at www.diannesutherland.com and the tutorial is available using the link in the bio🍁 🍂 🍃 #leafpainter #learntopaint #leaftuorial #rumexleaf #botanicalartonline #artsale #mastertheleaf #botanicalart #plantpainter #paintingthelight #watercolourtechniques #artlessons #rumexleaf #watercolourpainting

New sketchbook page. Found this Astrantia major, Masterwort flowering this weekend, which is very strange and late. The main patch is long gone, it had died off by early September. It’s not a native but has been here in the UK since the 16th century and is naturalised in some parts of the country. Anyway I absolutely love this plant, it’s not a big bold flower but you have to appreciate such subtle elegance in a plant…. and so made this quick sketch page because I always wanted to paint it. It’s also known as Hattie’s pincusion because it really does look like a little pincusion with all those tiny flowers, but those teeny flowers also make it super tricky to paint. This is the latest page for #botanicalsketchdates which I’ve been doing with my good friend @debbiecrawfordbotanicalartist for a few years now….It’s still the best thing to do! #botanicalart #botanicalaketchbook #flowerpainyer #plantpainter #naturejournal #greatermasterwort #astrantia #astrantiamajor #paintwithfriends #diannesutherlandart #sketchingflowers #keepingasketchbook #watercolourpainter

So, I ran out of canvases for a while and wasn't able to get more. With nothing else to do, I found these frame mounts I had bought a long time ago for doing mini pet portrait commissions. The pet portraits were nice, but I haven't advertised that type of thing in a long time, so the frame mounts have been unused. I thought of this funny idea of painting directly onto the mount, and I think it actually came out really nicely? I was fortunate enough to photograph Endellion Lycett Green in her Wiltshire studio over the weekend. Endellion’s paintings of plants span over three decades of observation. Hogweed and poppy seed-heads, which are both subjects found on my doorstep. This is one of the many interior grisaille illustrations for the lovely #EvergreenTheBook written by @LydiaMillen, and published by Orion. Painting with one colour to achieve a tonal effect is something I always enjoy and often do it before a painting in colour too - because it helps with understanding form without the confusion of colour. There are two things to consider, first the tonal variation between different parts of the subjects and also in relation to the effect of the light falling on the subject. It creates such a beautiful soft effect and that’s why it was perfect for this book 🤍 🖤 . #illustration #hogweed #poppyseedheads #grisaille #paintingtechniques #watercolour #paintingtechniques #botanicalart #plantpainter #bookillustration #newbook #staffordshirelandscape #naturepainter #paintingtheseasons

Frosty The forecast is for the first frost tonight. So ends the 2023 gardening season. This might be my second favorite day of the gardening year. The first is the day I spot the snowdrops blooming, the sure marker of spring pushing through the snowy landscape. Frost is the end of the season, and along with it, I bury all my gardening sins and transgressions. The day after frost begins the new garden season. In this new season, I'm reborn. I'm all possibility and perfection. This is my favorite self. The one who sees years of imperfection as an invitation to grow and learn, to adapt to life's changes with hope. Blessed is the frost reminding us to let go of the ideas of perfectability, the variety of best or brighter or higher self. May we embrace the flowering of self who lives, survives, blossoms, and fruits. May the fruit of this year contain the seed of life that begins the new gardening season of possibility. #painting #paintbrush #roots #botanicalart #plantparts #botanicalillustration #ranunculus #buttercups #plantpainter

New sketchbook page, the last of the little wild strawberries for this year. Looking a little worse for wear but even in decline and with many nibbles they are still beautiful. The light is fading earlier now we’re moving towards autumn. I’ve been videoing this for way too long, it’s now a big editIng job! You probably can’t see because it’s too dark, but I’m throwing down some blues and purples in the dark parts to make that orange red stand out…. Love the colour combinations in these aging dock leaves, they’re just so rich. Challenging too with just about everything thrown into the pot…..Bumpy bits, what feels like thousands of veins, several colour transitions and shiny bits. All good fun though….. I think! Always reminds me of the time as kids when we used to rub dock leaves on nettle stings, one time I fell into a huge nettle patch and covered myself in these leaves, of course there’s absolutely no evidence that they help but we all did it all the same and it seemed to cool the itching momentarily! 😂 #leafpainter #watercolourleaves #botanicalpainter #botanicalart #paintaleaf #newtutorial #botanicalartonline #dockleaf #nettlesting #rumex #lovelyleaf #plantpainter #diannesutherlandart

Lathyrus chloranthus, the page is growing! 💚 💛These study pages are like the big grown up version of the sketchbook pages, being 50 x 36 cm in size but the approach is much the same and it’s one of my favourite parts of making a painting….. my research. After growing the plant, which doesn’t always go to plan, I get to break the plant down into the sum if its parts on paper, making notes adding colour studies, and dissections… then larger sections of plant, I get get to know the growth habit and understand how it all fits together. Love the subtle understated colours in this plant. This Scots thistle, Onopordum acanthium, sadly it blew over in the wind and rain last week. So yesterday I had to find a small window of time to capture just a small part of it before it went completely past. I love this plant! it’s enormous, over 2.5m tall in fact. Its been sitting in a bucket at the back of the house and asking to be painted all week, but alas there is no more time. The desk is completely littered with plant debris and I’m very happy to have made this rather rushed entry into my #botanicalsketchdates2023 book. No shortage of plant material this year and the runners are rampant! #strawberrytime #botanicalart #plantpainter #paintedgarden #illustratingfruit #fruitpainter #strawberrytime #fruitpainter #summerfruits #redfruit #tastofsummer #inthegarden #botanicalartist #englishgarden #britishsummertime

I started this Rosa spinosissima sketchbook page when I was in Edinburgh at RBGE. Unfortunately I left the plant cutting on the paper when the fire alarm went off! So this page is covered in stains…. Oops! Does it matter, well no, it’s best not to be overly precious about a sketchbook. This is a such a lovely ‘Scots Rose’, it’s very low growing and only flowers once, so sadly I think it’s less popular with gardeners but it’s one of my absolute favourites and also I have it in the garden at home, so I finished it off upon my return home. This is the latest page in #botanicalsketchdates2023, a project with my good friend @debbiecrawfordbotanicalartist #sketchbook #rosaspinosissima #scotsrose #watercolourpainter #naturejournal #wildroses #scottishplants #paintedgarden #rbge #botanicalart #plantpainter #botanicalillustration #paintingnature #botanicalsketchdates

Rosebay Willowherb and Knappweed frame the paths everywhere at the moment….. we’re definitely moving on with the year as the shift in plants occurs. These two were painted in my first sketchbook, completed as part of the #botanicalsetchdates project with my good friend @debbiecrawfordbotanicalartist. It’s good to look back and to compare the timing of flowering each year, I wish I’d always added notes on the weather and temperature to compare each year too but I only did that on occasion. That way I think a sketchbook can become an important record of changes over the longer time. Our English summer feels more like autumn today….heavy rain batters the windows and the wind is howling. #wildfloweryear #paintingnature #rosebaywillowherb #sketchbook #knappweed #botanicalartist #plantpainter #paintingflowers #englishcountyside #summerrain #britishsummer #wildflowers #englishsummer #britishflora

Another Lathyrus study page underway. This one is Lathyrus aphaca, the yellow flowered pea. It’s interesting because the leaves are reduced to a simple long tendril and what looks like leaves are actually very large stipules. Apparently it’s another plant that can cause Lathyrism (paralysis) if too many of the peas are consumed. A big thank you to RBGE, who very kindly helped, last week. Now I need to get these plants recorded quickly……not forgetting the 18 different species that I’ve grown in the garden this year too…it’s going to be a busy summer. #lathyrus #botanicalart #botanicalpainting #peaplants #legumes #plantpainter #yellowfloweredpea #Royalbotanicgardenedinburgh #paintingproject #paintaplant #naturepainter #botanicalillustration #Lathyrusproject #diannesutherlandart #RBGE #lathyrus #lathyrusaphaca #paintagenus

Morning sunshine on the sketchbook. Iris pseudacorus from the pond on the lane. I was a bit late getting round to it and very few flowers left that I could get anywhere near to without falling in! It made a nice change to paint a larger flower - seems my subjects are often very small, so this was pretty quick to finish. I’m also sure I’ve painted more yellow flowers than any other colour….. will check that 🤔 The year is moving fast and we’re at the summer solstice already….. so better get painting! Oh I used some BlockX yellows here, I found them a little more saturated than Winsor and Newton so they need to be diluted more. Here’s one of my study pages for the Ludisia discolor, Jewel Orchid. It’s a native of SE Asia and very pretty. Although I ended up completing the final piece in graphite - I think I’ll also complete a colour version with the flower details that I so wanted to include but didn’t have time for. It has tiny flowers with a twisted column and labellum - it definitely deserves to be seen up close. #jewelorchid #ludisiadiscolor #studypages #botanicalart #botanicalillustration #watercoloursketches #orchidsofasia #paintaplant #plantpainter #botanicalpainter #singaporeorchids #exhibitions

Absolutely in love with this crazy combo. The Cardoon intertwined with the Redbud ‘Forest Pansy’ . I knew the cardoon would get enormous in this spot and it did exactly what I wanted it to do. I can’t wait until it blooms. 💚🌱 #redbud #cersiscanadensis #cardoon #colorcombo #plantpainter #colortheory

A bit of work on the blackthorn this morning, Prunus spinosa in the #whiteflowersketchbook. Determined to finish off these abandoned pages as the plants come into flower this year. It’s such a pretty tree and the flowers look like little twinkling stars. ✨ 🤍 Trying out the Art Graf white - using it on top of the white gouache layer, it’s pretty nice to paint with. #stillmanandbirnnova #whiteonblack #backtoblack #whiteflowers #prunusspinosa #blackthorn #sloe #diannesutherlandart #mysketchbook #sketchingflowers #botanicalart #botanicalpainter #paintaplant #plantpainter #naturepainter #naturejournal

Another unfinished from the #whiteflowersketchbook. Anemone ‘white swan’ such a graceful plant. This is on the grey #stillmanandbirn’ nova, it’s my favourite colour to paint on. More unfinished sketchpages, from the #whiteflowersketchbook, dated April 4th 2021. The thing I love about sketchbooks is how you can just drop back in year after year and add to those unfinished pages. Flowering again now in my garden Pulsatilla vulgaris Alba, the Pasqueflower or Easter flower. I planted a few of these when I moved in 4 years ago, they don’t all come back but they’re still hanging in. Every page in a sketchbook is a memory, every time I add to a page I note the date of the revision, it’s something to look back on. This is #stillmanandbirn nova Trio sketchbook, watercolour, white gouache and graphite…. Maybe there’s just 15 minutes to spare somewhere in the day to add a little more #sketching #watercolour #pulsatilla #pasqueflower #easterflower #paintaplant #learntopaint #stillmanandbirnsketchbooks #lovesketchbooks #naturejournal #plantpainter #bitanicalart #botanicalpainter #sketchbookmemories

I forgot about this painting! Another one to finish, the bindweed, Calystegia sepium. Here’s one from a few years ago, it’s a little painting from my travels to South Africa with my daughter Polly. It’s the ‘Devil’s Paintbrush’ Haemanthus coccineus, from Kirstenbosch Botanic Garden, and at the roadside too! So many amazing plants in South Africa, absolutely one of my favourite places….I need to return, maybe later this year, to paint more of the amazing plants 🎨 #capetown #haemanthuscoccineus #devilspaintbrush #southafricanflora #travellingpainter #botanicalartist #planthunter #plantsofthewot #livetopaint #travelpainter #plantpainter

Something juicy on the easel. A little work in progress of new plant abstractions I’ll be working on. Something fun while I plan what is next after finishing work for my solo that opens on the 1st 🎉 Who else sits and watches sunlight pass over, into and through their houseplants? 🌿The strong colors and translucence is mesmerizing ❤️ #houseplants #plantpainter #sunlightandshadows

Dandelion season is underway! After making various sketches of different species over the last two years, it’s time to turn sketches into paintings….. well maybe one or two dandelion painting this year. There are 240 recognised species in Britain and Ireland! so I’d need to paint a lot faster than that to paint them all! Very grateful for the wonderful work by John Richards in his Field Handbook to British and Irish Dandelions, published by the BSBI, no 23 (2021) #taraxacum #dandelions #dandelionseason #britishflora #bsbi #fieldhandbooktobritishandirishdandelions #wildflowers #painingnature #plantpainter #lovedandelions #botanicalartost #botanicalillustration

The leaf is a door and the lichen is an island emerging out of the luminous green ocean. The realities of studio life is a big old unpresentable mess. Squeezing in to this small room with my favourites @sethprints and @dankstock in ASC Brixton. So excited be working on some larger works inspired by my time in Brazil. Interesting how environments can travel through the body and be re interpreted into something new through the medium of paint…. #artiststudio #brixtonartiststudio #creativeden #oilpainting #plantpainter

#Repost @.diannesutherlandartist with @get_repost If you like it...please Follow me to see more Latest sketchbook pages, Selfheal, Prunella vulgaris. A common and very variable herb, this example is from the field margin at the bottom of my garden and it’s pretty tall. It’s an interesting plant, long used in treatment of various ailments, to reduce inflammation and infections but also with some trials including the impact of reducing diabetes complications by potentially lowering blood glucose levels. Research into breast cancer in reducing the side effects of treatment also into liver cancer as well as possibly reducing cholesterol! The plant contains flavonoids, tannins, ursolic, rosmarinic, caffeic acid and oleanolic acids, which may have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Trials to date have mostly been limited to animals or test tubes but with some human trials in breast cancer treatment and in reducing its progression (Zhao, et al. 2018). Who knows what the future holds with this plant. P. vulgaris is also known as ‘Heal All’ - maybe that’s a bit of a stretch but there is certainly hope with this plant. It’s an edible plant and fresh young leaves can be eaten in salad or can be cooked or dried to make a herbal tea. Common plants are cool too! 💜 This is the continuing botanicalsketchdates project with my dear friend debbiecrawfordbotanicalartist #selfheal #healall #prunellavulgaris #medicinalplants #diabetesresearch #breastcancerresearch #healingplants #botanicalsketchdates #botanicalsketchdates2022 Botanicalart #plantpainter #nativeplants #naturefournal #paintingnature #wildflowers #loveplants #lovepainting

Such strange stems - almost reptilian. Finally started the orchid study page this evening, which is just as well because the flowers are only just hanging in there, so I did all the flower studies and dissections first and now the stem. This deconstructed approach I find is the best way of understanding the plant parts and how they fit together, although I’ve yet to tackle the leaves…. 🤔 Working it out is the fun part, followed by the composition, which is sometimes the troublesome part …..let’s see if how it goes #botanicalillustration #paintaplant #plantpainter #botanicalartist #ludisiadiscolor #orchids #watercolourpainter #jewelorchid #painting #naturepainter #lovetopaint #latenightpainter

Back to my sketchbook! Started this Cyclamen coum on Jan 31 and abandoned it because of other work commitments. Can’t believe I missed a whole month! Fortunately it’s still flowering, so sat up til 3am last night. I love Cyclamen coum, not a native of course but it’s been here in England since the 1600’s, recorded by thr first keeper of Oxford Botanic Garden, Jacob Bobart in 1648. It’s naturalises under trees. I think this plant was purchased at Chelsea Physic garden around 2017 and it’s doing well in the garden. I painted it on vellum too.
