May 7, 2024 Emergency surgery for Mandragora officinarum! 🚨🚨🚨 As summer is fast approaching and temps are rising up, my mandrakes are going back to sleep, one by one. We have also been having a pretty wet spring, so root rot is certainly an issue on my mind. I usually unpot dormant mandrakes to check on their health and growth progress. Checking their crowns for signs of rot is my first step to determine which root needs to get a thorough check immediately. As I was going through my newly dormant mandrakes, I noticed one of the officinarum roots had some soft tissue and rotting skin, which was a clear signal for me to unpot it for a thorough check. Lo and behold, there were some minor roots at the crown. But more alarming was one of the smaller roots was actually rotting and broke off from the main body as I unpotted it (Photo 2). There were also sections that felt a bit soft when squeezed (sign of beginning of root rot). I have also noticed some white wort-looking nubs on those soft sections. I ended up having to cut off the rotting parts. I then covered the root in cinnamon powder. Because of its anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties, I have had good success in saving my mandrakes from minor rot using cinnamon powder. I'm going to let the root air out a day or two before deciding whether to replant it or to dry and preserve it. This root is only a little over 2 years old, and it's been growing quite nicely, so I don't feel quite ready to harvest it yet. Black henbane (Hyoscyamus niger) is one of the most famous poison plants in European witchcraft, particularly as an flying ointment ingredient. Black henbane was used as a flavouring in beer historically, but it was eventually replaced by hops during the late Middle Ages. Most of the honey bees are staying put inside their hives, but I found this lady taking refuge from the storm inside a Datura wrightii "Moon Child" blossom... When honey bees out foraging, they will take note of the weather, and will try to rush home before any bad weather hits. But not all of them can make it home in time... If a honey bee gets caught in bad weather, she will try to find a safe spot to land and wait it out, just like this little lady here. And I am absolutely loving the protection this datura is offering. So many people misunderstand the true nature of Datura and her energy. April 10, 2024 Look at the size of these Datura wrightii flowers!!!! This is Datura wrightii "Moon Child", the datura from the Southern Utah desert. She's 3 years old now, has survived crazy freezes in the past 3 years. She dies back each winter, but comes back in the spring. "Moon Child" bloomed her first flowers of the season during Total Solar Eclipse, and these flowers are at least a day old (that's why they look a bit spent). Fun fact: all of the D. innoxia I have currently growing are rogues -- these were seeds that I thought were duds, but it turned out they just took their time to sprout. Datura innoxia "White Rabbit" is the first poison ally that I consciously made connections and developed a relationship with, and she's the one that guided me into the rabbit hole of poisonous plant medicine (hence the name "White Rabbit" I gave her). March 11, 2024 Oh my heart 💜💜💜💜💜 Datura stramonium with purple bloomed during Dark Moon/New Moon! I have been wanting this particular variety of stramonium for quite some time, and thanks to other poison path friends I was able to get some seeds. I started them last summer, but they didn't grow until this year 😳. Now I'm obsessed! Datura stramonium is usually all white, so I need to dig deeper to see what caused this purple mutation. D. stramonium is what I call the "cold weather" datura, found mostly in more temperate/colder locales, such as Europe or northern parts of United States. In most European witchcraft texts or grimoires, when datura is mentioned, D. stramonium is what they are referring to. Their tropane alkaloid ratio is somewhat different than D. innoxia, D. wrightii and D. metel, and I have read that the effects from stramonium are also somewhat different than those other varieties (likely due to different alkaloid ratio). I personally have not used stramonium in my products because I never seem to grow enough of them. And I must admit I didn't feel as strong a connection with her as I feel with innoxia or wrightii. March 15, 2024 Comfrey flowers 🌱💜🌱 I have two plants growing, and while they woke up not about a month or so ago, one of them is already flowering!!! Those little bells are so adorable, they look like fairies in pink/purple ball gowns! Symphytum officinale, common comfrey or true comfrey, is a perennial flowering plant in the family Boraginaceae. In folk medicine, Symphytum officinale roots were used in traditional medicine internally (as a herbal tea or tincture) or externally (as ointment, compresses, or alcoholic extract) for treatment of various disorders. However comfrey is mildly toxic. Like most Boraginaceae, it contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids which are toxic compounds readily absorbed via the stomach or skin, and have the potential to increase the risk of fatal liver toxicity. Long-term usage, internally or externally, is not advised. My two plants are rather small and grow close to the ground because of our summer heat, but comfrey can get big and tall (1-5 feet). February 28, 2024 I'm so happy -- and relieved -- to see Datura wrightii "Moon Child" has returned, and I might even have a few rogue babies to help fill out the patch. "Moon Child" is a datura from the Escalante, Utah area. We love hiking in that part of Utah, and that's how I met "Moon Child". We were driving back through this winding valley after a day of hiking, and the corner of my eye caught a bush of datura growing on the side of the road. I literally yelled "STOP!!!!" at my husband so I could jump out of the car, ran back along the highway to the datura bush. I had just learned about the plant for the first time from another witch a few months back, so for me to meet the plant in the wild was the most exciting thing! ✨🤩✨ The following year we went back to Escalante, UT for another hiking vacation. This time I met even more datura -- along the highway, on dried river bed, in the middle of the desert. I saw a huge bush of datura growing along the base of the mountain when there's nothing else was growing around! On our way back to camp, we drove pass the datura I met the year before. I collected a couple of seed pods, hoping they would contain viable seeds (I still didn't really know how to identify viable seeds pods at the time). Ultimately datura had gifted me some viable seeds from those pods, and I was able to grow several plants, and the rest is history. The plants in my datura patch are now 3 years old, and many of my datura products are made with materials from these plants. I have other Datura wrightii growing as well -- I got seeds from other reliable sources like Strictly Medicinal, and they are dear allies on this poison path, but I definitely feel most connected with "Moon Child". February 24, 2024 Happy Full Moon 🌕 in ♍! Spring has certainly returned to Texas while I was gone. I'm happy to see a few new babies showing up in the Poison Garden: 🌱 Rogue datura babies... Not really sure which species they are at this point, they could be innoxia, discolor, metal or stramonium 🤔 Based on the bigger leaf shape, I want to say innoxia... But they could be a mix of several varieties in that clump 😅 🌱 Mandragora turcomanica baby... I got 10 seeds from Strictly Medicinal Seeds a while back while they were on sale. 2 actually sprouted, but only 1 made it so far, and the one made it actually popped up while I was gone and grew this much in about 2 weeks. 🌱 Atropa belladonna baby... I planted a bunch of deadly nightshade seeds, different varieties, back in December. This is the only sprout so far. The seeds might have gotten stunned during the short freeze that we had in January... February 12, 2024 It is always fun to meet new (to me) poisonous plant friends, especially while traveling to faraway places... I have heard enough about Helleborus niger, a.k.a. black hellebore or Christmas Rose, and have seen plenty of photos of it, but today is the first time I actually met one in person... Actually there were several of them, planted in planters as ornamentals, in the small university town of Passau, Germany. They are blooming in this unusually wet and warm early spring. It has always been one of my favorite flowers because of its intense fragrance. In America, Narcissus papyraceus, a.k.a. paperwhites, is the readily available substitute. N. papyraceus has a somewhat different fragrance, but nonetheless intense. This past Christmas I started growing some in the dining room, and I could smell the fragrance filling the room. N. tazetta was the very first poison plant I connected with (without even realizing it), and it's a connection that stayed with me even after 40+ years. February 4, 2024 The few days of freeze we had stunned the growth of most of my mandrakes, and this particular autumnalis has had enough and is ready to go back to sleep... I unpotted him to check on him, making sure there is no root rot or anything... This little one had a deep cut on his main root last time I checked on him, and the cut seems to have healed well. I put him back in newly fertilized soil after giving him a nice shower. I also had to harvest many of the foliage after they were damaged by the freeze... Poisonous and full of sharp spines, the Brazilian native is a member of the Nightshade family. January 14, 2024 To keep the greenhouse interior stay above freezing, I found a few 7-day candles do a good job. I used to use heat lamps to warm the greenhouse. Last year we lost power for 3 days during a hard freeze, so I had to try something different. The 7-day candles turned out to be a cheap way to keep the greenhouse from freezing. Plus it looks super pretty at night 😄. I found these House Blessing candles at our local grocery store that are cheaper than the plain white ones, so why not? November 25, 2023 Ilex vomitoria, otherwise known as yaupon or yaupon holly, is a species of holly that is native to southeastern North America. The word yaupon was derived from the Catawban yą́pą, from yą- tree + pą leaf. Another common name, cassina, was borrowed from Timucua (despite this, it usually refers to Ilex cassine). The Latin name comes from an observation by early Europeans that the ingestion of the plant was followed by vomiting in certain ceremonies. Yes, this is what is used, along with other herbs and plants, in making the (in)famous "Black Drink". It is only one of two known plants endemic to North America that produce caffeine. The other (containing 80% less) is Ilex cassine, commonly known as dahoon holly. The plant was traditionally used by Native Americans to make an infusion containing caffeine. Yaupon leaves can be used to make a delicious tea. Most of the time, though, yaupon is being used in landscaping in Texas and other areas within its native range. You often find them in big box home improvement stores, in the garden section. It is a rather hardy plant -- it is hot-, cold-, and drought tolerant once established, and they can grow vigorously from seeds in all light conditions. That means it can spread very easily. And it is hard to get rid of once established -- even after getting cut back all the way to base, it will sprout new growths when spring time comes around. November 20, 2023 It's been a little more than 5 weeks since I replanted Elaine the Mandragora autumnalis, after trying to dry her out for 6+ months. She's definitely waking up! 😱. If you'd recall, I "harvested" her when I noticed she was suffering from minor root rot at the crown. I set her out of soil to dry. When I checked on her in October, I noticed a tiny white spot at the crown, which turned out to be the beginning of a new sprout. So I soaked her in water overnight and replanted her, hoping for the best... This beautiful being grew from a rogue seed that fell outside of my "datura patch"... I reused some of the castor starter soil to fill the pot when I replanted M. autumnalis "Elaine"... Well apparently the castor bean that I thought was a dud is NOT a dud after all...🙄 I pulled the castor seedling out and replanted it somewhere else... It might or might not survive. But I didn't want anything crowding "Elaine" since she seems to need her space and time to awake (she is waking up very slowly...) October 26, 2023 My brugmansia, a regional cultivar bought at a farmer's market at 50% off a couple years ago, is finally producing flowers again. She has had a rough year 😮💨, having to endure some extreme weather. After surviving a late winter freeze (and sadly my other brug didn't), she struggled all through our scorching summer. Finally when the weather started to cool a little in September, she really started to flourish. Here's another thought: brugmansia enjoys the company of other plant allies. She is grown in a giant planter so she can be moved in case of freezing temps. She (and my other brug) were situated in a shaded spot away from the rest of the poison/witch's garden. After her companion died, she was all alone in that isolated spot. Last month I moved her into the poison/witch's garden so she could be water by the sprinklers with the rest of plant allies. She seems to enjoy the new spot because not only did she grow bigger while I was in Hong Kong, she is now producing flowers. By the way, this brugmansia is similar to the one I encountered in Hong Kong (see my post a few weeks back). They are probably not the same species, but fairly closely related. October 13, 2023 This is Elaine, Mandragora autumnalis I adopted as a tiny seed root 2 years ago. She had minor root rot back in April, so I unpotted her with the intention to dry her and make an alraun fetish. I covered her in cinnamon powder and set her by my plant altar to dry, checking on her periodically. Well, yesterday when I checked, I noticed a tiny white spot on the supposedly dried-out crown. Upon closer inspection, I realized that's the start of a new sprout!!!! 🌱😱🌱. After sleeping for 6 months outside of soil, Elaine might be waking up!!!! And her body is still not completely dried out! So I quickly bathed her in silvered moon water charged by Harvest Moon over night, and potted her up in fresh soil again. October 10, 2023 Ladies and gentlemen, meet Brugmansia in Hong Kong!!! (I can't tell you which exact species this is, as brugmansia is not a native plant of Hong Kong) 🤷🏻♀️ I met this beauty while hiking the highest peak in Hong Kong, and she is literally at the very top of the mountain! Hidden away off the main trail, she basically called out to make me look her way. I can't even describe my excitement when I spotted her some 20 yards away - I literally ran over to meet her! It is always lovely to meet familiar plants in the wild, but when you meet a plant ally in your home town 8000+ miles, half a continent and an ocean away, it is beyond amazing! 🥹. You can kind of see the city in the background if you really zoom in the first photo. Fun tidbit: This particular brugmansia looks very similar to what I'm growing at home. There is a Chinese military base of sorts nearby and someone is probably keeping chickens, because I heard rooster crowing. And we met a handful of cows roaming near the mountain top. Being surrounded by trees (instead of millions of people), with rooster crowing in the background and in the presence of cows and brugmansia, it felt like I was back in Texas for a moment... August 23, 2023 Datura never ceases to amaze me. Just when you know how she behaves, she does something surprising... These seed pods sat on the stem with their seeds mostly stuck together neatly, even after all the "flesh" of the fruits has dried up and fell off. This is so not what you normally see when a datura fruit ripens and pops open - no pile of seeds scattered as the fruit "explodes". July 30, 2023 More harvest photos 😁 1 - Datura wrightii bundle that needed to be washed and dried 2 - D. wrightii fruits at various stages of development 3,4,5 - D. wrightii fruits opening up. The seeds don't always stay packed tightly as pictured (3 & 4), especially if the fruit is still on the plant. June 8, 2023 New batch of Elixir de Datura is in the works!!!! What is Elixir de Datura? It's raw honey from our honey bees infused with datura grown in our poison garden. Sweet and warm with a little kick courtesy of high proof vodka (to help pull the alkaloids out of the datura leaves and flowers). It's calming and soothing, great with a nice cup of warm tea before bedtime. Taking a tiny spoonful is also an amazing way to connect with datura and feel her nurturing side -- someone once described it like a nice loving hug. This batch will be ready sometime in mid to late July. And as I harvest more datura and honey throughout summer, I'll likely make a few more batches. p.s. June 1, 2023 I had the most amazing belladonna berry -- it was HUGE, dark and shiny, like a beautiful black pearl. It was the very last berry on a dying plant that I somehow missed when I harvested the berries. I didn't get around to harvesting it when I noticed it a couple of days ago. And last night, some MF ate the berry!!!!! 🤬🤬🤬🤬. My guess is the freeloading trash panda Skuttle Butt 🦝 because it's known for suck dick move 🤬🤬🤬🤬 Ugh, and of course I'm mad at myself for not harvesting it as soon as I noticed it... May 29, 2023 Harvest time! Yes, with Texas stepping firmly into summer, datura is ready for harvests. This year is the first time I feel comfortable to start harvesting datura this early. In the past I had always wanted her to grow as big and full as possible and harvest only when she was completely out of control. I felt that was the best way for me to build my relationship with her - let the wild and feral beauty go wild and feral like she does in the Utah deserts... And datura has rewarded me with an abundance of plant materials for making medicine and seeds to ensure I will never run out of plants. And thanks to y'all 's support, I actually ran out of the materials I collected last year, so there is actually a need to start harvesting now. I am learning that it is so much more manageable to collect and process in smaller batches more frequently, and I will likely end up with a larger reserve of materials because I have the rest of the summer to harvest. And the added bonus is the plant materials used in making products will be as fresh as they can be, which means more potent medicines. By the way, we just pulled honey from our hives for the first time this year, and I'll be making more datura infused honey onces the datura leaves are ready.
