Have you ever made your own elderberry syrup? I find brewing my own medicines to be the most healing when I’m unwell. I can slowly and mindfully collect and craft my herbs with intention and infuse them with whatever plant allies are calling to me in the moment. So under the new moon, I gathered my strength and stepped into the kitchen. Little by little I blended my brew together, with many rest breaks and herbal teas in between. Then strained the fruits and roots and bottled the syrup ready to nurture us through the week ahead. I woke to the aroma of elderberry still filling the house, and the comfort of knowing I have everything I need right here to nurture myself back to wellness. (Thanks to my endless @blissful.herbs collection) Once upon a time, the first sign of sickness meant rushing to the doctor, rushing to get pills, and rushing back to work still feeling dreadful. Plants teach us the magic of going slow, resting, and waiting for the right moment to reemerge. The new moon in Taurus invites us all to slow down, ground ourselves and reconnect with the wisdom and abundance we already possess. One moment we may feel that the waters are calm only to realise soon hereafter that there are many things lurking beneath the surface. Waiting for us to discover and look at. I have been finding some pretty decent stuff at the local dollar tree. Pictured here are some Freesia flower bulbs. Along with a pack of three of those I picked up some caramel syrup and mixed it along with lemon juice into a mug of Violet tea. I plan to grow freesia flowers. Freesias frequently represent friendship, purity, and trust, yet there is something charming about them and their sweet scent. Aquilegia canadensis~ Red Columbine, a gorgeous native plant with traditional medicinal uses. A wetlands indicator species. The plant is 6–35 in tall. The fern-like leaves are lobed and grouped in threes, growing from the base and off the flowering stems. The flowers are 1–2 in long and have yellow petals with a red spur and red sepals. They appear in late spring (usually in May and June), nodding on stems above the leaves. The round end of the spur contains nectar, which is sought by butterflies and hummingbirds. The caterpillars of columbine duskywing (Erynnis lucilius) feed on the leaves. Native American tribes used various parts of red columbine in herbal remedies for ailments such as headache, sore throat, fever, rash caused by poison ivy, stomatitis, kidney and urinary problems, and heart problems. When I work with possession, whether you’re possessed by part of yourself or a foreign entity, I use acupuncture points and essential oils to support your healing and sovereignty. This art form comes from Jade Purity Taoism—the vibrational combination of specific oils with specific meridians shifts the flow of energy within your body. Made some stinging nettle tincture this morning 💚 Nettles are filled with nutrients that our bodies need and very often don’t get from the foods we eat. Some of these include, calcium, fiber, protein, potassium, flavonoids, ascorbic acid, glucosamine, beta-carotene, vitamin K , iron and many more…. The leaves also contain anti-inflammatory, astringent and diuretic properties. Notice my garden glove. You don’t want to harvest nettles with bare hands. The leaves contain needle like hairs that when they brush up against your skin release chemicals that cause a mild, but uncomfortable rash. Once the nettles are dried or cooked, however, the needles are no longer an issue. Nettle is delicious in soups or pesto. You can use it in place of spinach in recipes (just not raw). You can also make tea with the dried leaves. Found a beautiful patch of Plantain growing in the corner of my backyard. 💚 Plantain is found everywhere and considered a “weed” but has a wide array of medicinal properties. One of the most popular ways to work with plantain is for the skin. It is very cooling and soothing to burns, bites, stings and wounds. It has a drawing action that, when applied as a poultice, can draw out venom from a sting or a splinter. It also has anti microbial properties and helps prevent infection as wounds heal. You can also dry the leaves and drink it as an infusion (tea) to soothe the digestive tract and reduce inflammation in the gut. It is also soothing to the lungs and can help relieve dry coughs. Plantain moistens and cools the lungs. So before you pull out those “weeds” in your yard, make sure you know what they are!
