Blessings from our beloved zephirine drouhin heirloom climbing roses It’s been an amazing season so far in southern NY for spring flowers…daffodils, dandelions, lilac, cherry blossoms and azaleas…anticipating the beautiful fragrance of these roses to bless the air soon! Many summers passed where we would be intoxicated(I think all plants have the ability to alter your state of mind) by the scent of these beauties and would say we have to bottle this scent. Plants adapt to spaces and find homes in places that we don't often expect, but sometimes we have given them names to reflect this, like Pellitory of the Wall. #parietariadiffusa a member of the #urticaceae family which the red admiral #butterfly loves. The pink flowering plant isn't it, that's a form of Valerian, but not the one used as medicine. Pellitory, loves hanging out on walls such as ruins + doesn't mind if they are stone or brick. It's often ignored, as even when in flower it's not brash or showy but just quietly getting on with life enjoying the view. It's wonderful #herbalmedicine as it not only moves things, but breaks into them, helping eradicate obstacles. This is very helpful with kidney stones, + calculus, as it will dissolve and move out of the body. It helps when the prostate is large and inflamed too and if there is oedema, as this demulcent #herb cools, soothes and eases the passage of urine. Lilac Simple Syrup 🌸1 cup water 🌸1 cup sugar 🌸1 cup lilac flowers, stems and green parts removed 🌸 5-8 blueberries, for color I don’t know about you, but every May, when I catch a whiff of that sweet, floral, whimsical scent of lilac, spring has truly begun. I remember as a child, our lilacs would bloom around Mother’s Day, and we would always bring my mother and grandma big bunches of lilacs, picked by grubby hands; from plants that may or may not have been ours. My grandpa would have us all over for the first barbeque of the season- usually chicken or hand formed hamburgers, accented by the smell of the lilacs growing next to his grill. For dessert, my grandmother loved strawberry shortcake, and I can still see it on her doilied table, adorned with big sprigs of lilac. As an adult, every time I pass a lilac shrub, I almost feel called to fade into its fragrant branches, and return to another time. Quite appropriately, lilac symbolizes first love and reminiscence. It’s curious how plants draw us in, like a loved memory, or an old friend… Of course lilacs invite us to reminisce about our first love this time of year, our mothers! This Lilac Syrup is a beautiful way to preserve the memory of spring, and would make a lovely gift for a special mother or grandmother. Combine the water and sugar over medium heat on the stove. Heat until dissolved. Add the lilac flowers and simmer for 10 minutes. If you want a brighter hued syrup, add a few blueberries.
