About this weekend... I had the honor and privilege to sit with an indigenous medicine man who arrived from Mexico a few days ago. The medicine he brought with him was from my fathers homeland, Jalisco The alignment was completely parallel This experience merged dimensions and left me with a deep clarity and introspective awareness of the interconnectedness of the limitless parallels and dimensional planes our Soul exists on. I was able to connect deeply to my ancestral roots on my fathers side as well as to my native ancestors on my mothers side. I was able to explore the embodiment and initiation of this particular plant medicine and walk beside this seasoned and devoted medicine man as he taught me their ways and I witnessed the mystical, magical moments where the unseen can be seen and the unseen, is felt. It's really hard to put into words. I was so honored to witness men in their heart opening journey To hold space and assist along side such power, divinity and sacred connection to the people, not just of the past but the torch carriers and way showers that are the answered prayers of the people, of the Cosmic Grandmother and Grandfather I sat beside my own Mother in a journey of healing and self discovery as we prayed, sun down to sun up for the healing of our family, our lineage, our parent/child relationship. It is said that the very first Bobolian (shaman healers) had learned from the Kogiu or Orang-Utan. Recently, we read an article on Popsci.com about a wild orangutan named Rakus using a plant to treat its own open wound. This behavior was apparently never before observed in the animal world. Well, according to traditional lore, it has. It reminds us of an interesting story from Kiau documented by Ivor Evans in his book Among Primitive Peoples in Borneo. In it, he retells Yompo's story of two hunters encountering an orangutan in the jungle, who sings about his travels from one river to another until he becomes too old to climb trees. "Then the men who had been listening said to one another: 'This Kagyu is clever at verses, let us shoot him with our blow-pipes.' One man was about to shoot when the Kagyu saw him and said: 'Do not shoot me, but make me a hut and let me live here till I die. When you have made my hut, bring your sisters here and I will teach them magic, for I am skilled in it.' So the men made him a hut and they brought their sisters to him, and the Kagyu instructed them how each sickness has its own magical ceremony. He taught them the spells for snake-bite and fever, and for the bite of the centipede." The women taught by the orangutan then became healers in their village, successfully treating sickness and wounds using the magic they learned. The species today is critically endangered due to poaching, habitat destruction, palm oil and the illegal pet trade. June 23: Composting Grief Taking time to myself to reflect on the past year ( ), and working through the remnants of tightness in my body and soul due to C-PTSD, and a winter where I didn’t move much. I’m finding so much comfort in the presence of native plants, capturing them as they too, shed former pieces of what they once were. There’s something so calming about witnessing and photographing these beings as they metamorphose into the next phases of their perpetual cycle.
