Keeping a pulse. After 23 straight days working my Wildfire job, my ‘rest’ days are now filled with observing the land. Last year we had poor pollination, this year we have had temperatures well above ‘normal’, resulting in berry bushes either not setting fruit or drying them right on the branches. Another year of zero harvests for the humans, and hoping there will be enough for the wild critters. With the mindset of stewardship over ego, I’ll be propagating more of these native species by both seed and cuttings. We are here as guests, it’s the very least we can do. . . . #landsteward #landstewardship #indigenouslandstewardship #nativespecies #secwepemc #wildfire #wildfireseason #womeninwildfire #berryseason #4thsisterfarm

And we are forever grateful they kept going... I will be back Home again soon. “This is the way it started, three friends, all young men from Adams Lake were supposed to be going hunting for long periods of time. from Adams Lake they took an old trail along Seymour Arm, went across the Columbia River and made camp at Downie Creek. There they stayed and made a dugout canoe. From Downie Creek camp they sailed up the Columbia River. They came to a big lake, Kinbasket Lake. Although it was not named Kinbasket Lake at this time. They were away from their people for a long time and the weather was cold. It was time to go home. When they went home they told the people about their travels. A year or so later the same men were joined by two or three other young men from Chu Chua. One of these men was named Yelheelna Kinbasket, my great Grandfather. They went right over the mountains near Adams Lake and followed the lake where they made a dugout canoe and went right across the lake. They were really curious and were wondering what was up the river and on the other side of the Columbia Mountains so they kept going.” Excerpt from Great Grandma Elder Shelagh Palmer Kinbasket Dehart’s book ‘The Kinbasket Migration and Other Indian Stories’ . . . #secwepemc #secwepemculecw #indigenousmigration #kinbasket #kinbasketlake #kootenays #columbiariver #ancestralland #indigenousstories #indigenousstorytelling #adamslake #homesick #4thsisterfarm

Doe Pho! (Funny and punny, since it doesn’t actually rhyme 🤣) I’m battling pretty severe depression, anxiety and jet lag after coming home from the shit show that was COP26 in Glasgow, so haven’t been really interested in cooking. Finally feeling a bit more like myself today, I figured it was time to level up and care for my poor weary body and soul. Broth: Fish stock (homemade from Secwepemcúl’ecw-harvested trout bones), onion, garden garlic, sriracha, fish sauce, fresh ginger Fixins: Shredded raw cabbage, garden carrots and garlic, cilantro, fresh lime juice, rice noods, thinly-sliced boreal whitetail doe (easiest to do when still slightly frozen) I brought the stock to a slight rolling boil, cooked rice noods in it, then poured piping hot over the fixins. Seriously nourishing and filling. This is my jam, throwing together beautiful ingredients that have been cared for all year, and put up when my energy was higher. . . . #pho #hunter #deerhunting #deer #garden #zone2gardening #nourishment #secwepemc #secwepemculecw #boreal #cop26 #cop26glasgow

Aug 14 Photo Dump Things are happening in the gardens! I’m to be on ‘days of rest’ from my Wildfire work, but it’s tough to turn off the radio (and my brain), with everything that’s happening around us. Reflecting on the last week, and realizing what a whirlwind it’s been for my ‘rest’ days post-Wildfire contract. I’ve been taking in many panels and webinars for seed and food/social justice and sovereignty, and am truly feeling the ‘zoom fatigue’ setting in. So what a nice little treat to see the article I was interviewed for in modfarm alongside some fierce and beautiful humans: ladyjnunu liz.charlebois and even my Dear Mentor rowenwhite. I made sure to throw in a shoutout to the amazing work being done by our friends at sovereignseedsnetwork. It still feels a bit surreal to have my voice shared with these people I look up to and consider as leaders in this work we do. But this is a shared movement we are working towards, in helping our respective communities and ensuring seed diversity for future generations. I spent time this weekend also breaking down squash and harvesting our red wattle pigs on-farm, readying them for the gov-inspected butcher. We typically have to load them live, but it’s extremely stressful on everyone, so it was decided that this was the most humane way since they’re for personal use. So I sit with feelings of grief, but with also a heart full of thanks and gratitude for the food sovereignty that continues to guide my way. I’ve been longing to grow and taste more of my traditional Secwepémc foods and medicines, so decided this winter to embark on the adventure. Jan 14: The Pull Towards the Light As the days slowly get longer, my draw to the seeds gets stronger. Waaay too early to start annuals, but many perennials have been started, including a whole bunch of tradish Secwepémc foods and medicines (last photo). I’ve been longing to grow and taste more of my traditional Secwepémc foods and medicines, so decided this winter to embark on the adventure. These are the epitome of ‘slow foods’, seeds that require periods of cold/moist, the warm/moist stratification, and a lot of patience and care. I’m (naturally) drawn to the root foods. Not much to say except I’m feeling so grateful, humbled, and privileged enough to live amongst this beauty. We do our best to ensure their safety while they breed and rear young, and tend their forest with gentle hearts and hands. And they in turn come back each year and help feed and nourish our family. To see the same animals and their families year after year is my dream come true. . . . #northernlife #reciprocity #ungulates #ethicalharvest #secwepemc #landsteward #landstewardship #4thsisterfarm

June 23: Composting Grief Taking time to myself to reflect on the past year ( ), and working through the remnants of tightness in my body and soul due to C-PTSD, and a winter where I didn’t move much. I’m finding so much comfort in the presence of native plants, capturing them as they too, shed former pieces of what they once were. There’s something so calming about witnessing and photographing these beings as they metamorphose into the next phases of their perpetual cycle. This also greatly helps me recognize them in their changing states, and makes for some satisfying teaching material creation for upcoming native seed stewardship schools. 🌱 . . . #plants #nativeplants #botany #nativeseedcollection #indigenousresearch #secwepemc #indigenousmedicine #seedsteward #honeysuckle #asters #twinberry #willow #indigenousseedsteward #cptsd #cptsdawareness #trauma #traumarecovery #4thsisterfarm

In love with how this day turned out! Speqpeq7úw’i (Saskatoons) are ripe for the picking, I made a new friend in Round-Leaved Bog Orchid (Platanthera orbiculata), and 2 special packages arrived from 2 very special badass Indigenous artists: My very first ribbon skirt (with matching mask and scrunchie!!) by 4generationscreations, and a signed copy of ‘Calling My Spirit Back’ by elaine_alec_writer_speaker! I feel so grateful to be able to support my fellow Secwépemc artists. ❤️🧡💛 . . . #ribbonskirts #indigenousartists #secwepemcart #secwepemc #indigenouswriters #indigenousfoodsovereignty #secwepemcstin #laguagelearner

BC wants to recriminilize drugs in public spaces. “We all want and deserve communities where all people, whether they use drugs or not, can access safety and well-being. By imposing these restrictions on the decriminalization pilot without offering real solutions like expanding overdose prevention services and access to housing, the province has declared some lives unworthy of saving.” -Corey Ranger, Harm Reduction Nurses Association Tired of old privileged white men telling us who’s worthy of life and death? Tired of seeing people drop like flies to preventable deaths and drug policies designed to kill? Look no further, it’s as easy as copying and pasting my template and sending it off to the old decrepit farts, and you’ve done more than 80% of the population: use your voice. Swipe for harm reduction myths and realities-> Email your representatives! Tell them you support decriminalization and harm reduction, including safe supply and safe consumption sites! Prohibition of substances has never and will never be the answer. Decriminalization can’t work as intended if leaders refuse to fund the programs that go alongside it properly, and instead of doing that, BC NDPs want to scrap it altogether, taking a huge step back in our fight against the opioid crisis. This is an active failure on the BC NDP’s part, as well as all the people supporting and pushing for these decisions, including MLA Lorne Doerkson (and voters, none of us are innocent, even I myself have spread misinformation and stigma around drug use in the past, but when we know better we do better) Link in comments for template to email Lorne Doerkson, as well as to find out who your local representatives are if you’re not sure. Use your voice. These dinosaurs paychecks are paid by our tax dollars, don’t let them play god.
