In the face of climate change, adapting seed for extreme conditions is crucial to ensure sustainable harvests for farmers and a more secure food future for all. When seeds bred for stable environments meet climate change conditions in farmers’ fields, crop failures follow. No one knows this better than Chris Wooding of @ironwoodorganics (ON) who suffered an 8% wheat yield (80lb/acre) due to flooding in 2017. The grain that survived (hard red spring wheat and Winter Rose Red Fife) now forms the basis of Chris’ Flood Fife which he has selected on only his wettest fields. Thankful for the time spent with a great teacher - Sue! -and our guests Jen, Rosalyn, Clea, Maisie, Duncan and Caelynn for helping today to rake, weed, plant and transplant the Teaching Garden’s new Seed Saving Garden! We removed some Italian Parsley so that it wouldn’t cross pollinate with the curly parsley. Planted stored leeks, carrot and parsnip roots. Transplanted overwintered green onions and celery - all of these biennial plants which will produce seeds this year. We’re on our way to creating more food security by establishing seed security. We learned a lot and got work done - 2 things we love to have happen in this space. Kids built a fort and kept as busy as the adults. A good day! They were also asked to unpackage the generous donation by @watson_gloves to have in the shed for new gardeners who need a pair! Thank you Watson Gloves! Sharing from @shropshiregoodfood Seed Week is a celebration of seed launched by @thegaiafoundation ’s Seed Sovereignty Programme, so we’re joining in to showcase the Bishop’s Castle Community Seed Bank and what they are doing to promote local level food security. The BC Seed Bank is a small volunteer-run initiative that was started in 2020, when supply chain disruptions left shelves empty and people scrambling to buy seeds to grow their own at home. It runs monthly at the Bishop’s Castle Farmer’s Market with friendly faces offering growing and seed saving advice. This little seed bank is one of the ways that Bishop’s Castle is delivering on its Community Food Resilience Strategy through @food_forwardbc, which is itself a branch of the town’s Climate Action Plan @bcclimateaction. It has delivered seed saving training locally with the support of @northernseedsov and @thegaiafoundation. You can find seed saving info from the BC Seed Bank on the Resources page of the SGFP website. The aims of the Seed Bank are: -to build a community around sharing knowledge of seed saving, growing and seed sovereignty -to foster food security through inclusive access to open-pollinated seed -to support the species genetic diversity of seed stock outside of corporate ownership -to nurture our mutual connections by saving and sharing seed as an act of care for others to build local resilience in the face of climate change, crisis, and food system shocks How the Seed Bank works: -Borrow Seed -Grow it (eat some and let some continue to grow on to seed) -Save that seed, then -Share it back to the Seed Bank The Seed Bank is free if you are local and can share back some of what you have grown and saved - The sustainability of the project relies on this cycle. Swipe to learn about this promising rutabaga breeding project, a collaboration between Caroline Poirier of @ferme_croque_saisons and Marie-Claude Comeau of La Radicule, supported by SeedChange’s Canadian program, The Bauta Family Initiative on Canadian Seed Security. – Peut-on rendre le rutabaga plus attrayant pour les consommateurs.rices, tout en le cultivant pour les semences? Peut-on créer un légume plus facile à vendre et mieux adapté aux conditions de culture locales et biologiques? C’est le défi que se sont lancé Caroline Poirier, agricultrice à la ferme Croque-Saisons, et Marie-Claude Comeau, productrice de semences à La Radicule en 2021. Bien que certains amateurs de rutabaga adorent ce légume rustique, les racines sont rarement uniformes, ce qui rend difficile la mise en marché pour les agriculteurs. Caroline voulait créer un rutabaga « Joan » plus uniforme et plus attrayant pour ses clients. Dans le cadre d’un projet spécial de sélection, notre équipe de Sème l’avenir Québec l’a mise en contact avec Marie-Claude afin qu’elles puissent travailler ensemble à sélectionner les plus belles racines de rutabaga pour la récolte, tout en les cultivant localement pour en faire des semences. Caroline est ravie des résultats obtenus jusqu’à présent : « Sur nos quelques 4000 plants, Marie-Claude a sélectionné et taillé 50 individus, que nous avons entreposés dans notre chambre froide jusqu’au printemps pour qu’elle puisse les replanter. Nous utilisons les semences qu’elle a récoltées depuis deux ans et nous en sommes très satisfaits. Elles germent bien et nous donnent des rutabagas délicieux, de bonne taille et uniformes. Nous sommes ravis et quelque peu surpris de constater qu’une amélioration a été apportée en un seul cycle de sélection.”

Today is Canada’s Agriculture Day. On this day - and every other day - we celebrate everyone involved in the organic agricultural sector across the country. We especially want to thank the small-scale farmers, organic growers and seed savers who play a vital role in growing food, saving seeds, stewarding the land and nourishing communities. Here are 5 ways you can show your support today: 1. Make a meal using locally grown produce. Beets, carrots, cauliflower, kale and potatoes are all in-season now across the country. Look for the “locally grown” section in your grocery store, and prioritize organic produce when possible. 2. Buy seeds from a local company for the upcoming gardening season. Growing your own food from seed is a powerful way to vote for a better food system. Look for organic, open-pollinated varieties that are adapted to your local conditions - they will grow best in your climate without the need for fertilizers. To find seeds near you, explore the resources on our website. Search for “Seedchange local seeds” to find our list of Canadian seed companies. 3. Send a note to a farmer in your community to thank them. Words and small gestures can be overlooked, but they often have the greatest impact. Send an email (or better yet, a hand-written note) to your local farmer to say how much you appreciate them and value their contribution to your community. 4. Donate. If you are in a position to do so, consider making a small donation to an organization that supports small-scale farmers, such as SeedChange and the amazing partners we work with across the country (we tagged some of them in this post). A small contribution of a few dollars might not seem like much, but trust us when we say it’s making every bit of difference. If you can, consider making a monthly donation to make an even more lasting impact. 5. Spread the word. Share this post or a farmer’s story.
