🌱 In Kenya, Local Seed Banks Combat Food Insecurity 🌾 In the heart of Kenya, community seed banks are emerging as beacons of hope and resilience, particularly for smallholder farmers. Amidst legal constraints that limit seed sales to certified companies, these banks offer a vital alternative for locals to exchange and preserve seeds, thereby enhancing food security. Happy Earth Day! In honor of Unci Maka, I wanted to share these unique takes on seed bombs. My Kinážiŋ project has two parts, one that is a much larger biophilic public sculpture and the other that are individualized mini sculptures that contain the seeds of local Indigenous plants. These little turtles contain a mix of wild flower seeds for pollinators. The Kinážiŋ project is a land back activation of returning Indigenous plants to urban areas of Colorado through a clay sculpture containing seeds that is quite literally meant to return to the land. Kinážiŋ(Key-Na-Zi) means to return to where you were moved from in Lakota. This is a super fun activity to do in classrooms. Preserving Indigenous Seeds to Restore Forest Lands!🌱🌳 In efforts to restore forested areas and bolster green coverage, forest dwellers are diligently collecting and storing native forest seeds. These seeds will be sown as seed balls once the monsoon season arrives in India. This initiative not only aims to rejuvenate community forest areas but also involves the preservation of diverse indigenous seeds tailored to individual forest lands. PRADAN recently facilitated Indigenous Seed Festivals in Mandipadar, Jodi, and Kumbhia villages, situated in the Rayagada district of Odisha. These festivals were organized to highlight the significance of traditional seed preservation practices within the community. The primary objective was to encourage the continuation of these practices to safeguard rare and valuable seeds from extinction. The events saw enthusiastic participation from community members, farmers, representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), members of Forest Rights Committees, and staff from Forest Rights Cells. Discussions centered around the importance of indigenous seeds and the imperative need for their preservation. Waaay too early to start annuals, but many perennials have been started, including a whole bunch of tradish Secwepémc foods and medicines (last photo). I’ve since heard Alice has passed away. This was the only of 3 Tobacco varieties that grew and seeded for me last year. Powerful medicine. Here are ‘Canada Victor’ (72% germ), and ‘Large Red’ (100% germ) being germ tested after storage. I’m quite happy with the results after only 8 days, but will likely run a second test on Canada Victor a bit later to see if we can get better results after 10 days. They may just need more time.
