Here’s an interesting comparison… the first picture is of Clary Sage started in Coast of Maine seed starting mix on May 2nd, in a takeout container, in which I drilled holes in the bottom. The second picture is of Clary Sage started in small soil blocks, in a soil blocking mix, on April 20th and bumped up to Coast of Maine potting mix in Winstrips on May 9th. I don’t see an advantage to using small soil blocks here. I’ll be ordering more Vietnamese take out from our fabulous local restaurant and will save my take out trays for future use. Seeding in trays instead of soil blocks works much better for me when it comes to Scabiosa, Cosmos, Marigolds, Feverfew and many more. I will be doing a lot more of this. Wow, my 'Epic hybrid' eggplant seedlings are doing GREAT! They had been growing slowly but steadily, and then all of a sudden, they kicked it into high gear. They are going to grow in my GreenStalk vertical planters this year. I grew 6 of them last year and was so impressed with this variety. And after discovering last year that you can freeze slices of eggplant to use later, that definitely made me want to grow more this year. I know eggplants aren't everyone's cup of tea but boy are they tasty in dishes like eggplant caponata. Mm-mmm! Barring anything going wrong this should be a great garden harvest year for me *Knocks on wood and fingers crossed* Last year I had beautiful cabbages and other plants then I somehow got aphids in the house. None of my houseplants were ever affected so I don’t know where they came from. By the time I noticed them they’d done some real damage to my vegetable plants. Only two cabbages survived. Today was the first day of hardening off my cold hardy plants. Next week is supposed to be in the 60’s with lows in the 40’s at night! If all goes well I plan to plant them out next weekend. I started a lot of companion plants indoors from seed months ago, nasturtium, marigold, calendula, and others. Also some veggie starts and fun flowers like cornflowers, snapdragons, and poppies. I’m up to my ears in petunias for my mom. My lettuces got leggy but that was Oregon’s fault. 🤣 I’m going to make some trellises out of bamboo that was growing in the yard, going to attempt to fire cure them over a fire pit, I have no idea if that is going to work. Might as well try, eh? I saw many different methods. Also have a lot more things to direct sow this week. More vegetables, more flowers. I’m building a pollinator friendly garden bed with mostly natives, but also have some beds for my cut flower garden for wonderful bouquets. Yes, you can direct sow into your Strawbale Garden. 🥬🥕🥒🍉🎃🌿🥬🥕🥒🍉🎃🌿🥬🥕🥒🍉🎃🌿 The larger seeds (pumpkins, gourds, squash, etc) can be inserted directly into the bales to a proper depth. I did half my pumpkins and squash this way last year with about 50% successful germination. Don't fret about your small seeds (herbs, carrots, lettuce, etc) Plinko-ing to the bottom of your Strawbales. If you create a thin soil layer for them to stay close to the surface of the bales, you'll have successful germination. Just remember, it takes a little more time for your plants to get established in the Strawbales. The Rodale Institute has a guide called QUICK AND EASY GUIDE: ON-FARM PRODUCTION OF ARBUSCULAR MYCORRHIZAL FUNGUS INOCULUM. It involves growing Bahia grass in the fall and letting it winter kill and then harvesting the mycorrhizae from the roots. Makes sense for a farm but for a home garden, I find it a lot easier to dig up a grassy patch from an adjoining field in the spring and harvest the mycorrhizae from that. I shake all the soil off the turf (apparently mycorrhizae cling to it) and cut up the fine root hairs and put them into my transplant mix. I pull out any larger root segments that accidentally fall in to avoid regrowth of perennial weeds. Yes, you end up with some weed seeds in the mix but they’re easy to deal with when they first start growing and there are already tons of similar weed seeds that blow into the garden with the wind. I haven’t done a true experiment but I feel my transplants have grown better since I started doing this. I also grow mycorrhizae in place where I am growing tomatoes the next year by planting a cover crop of mache in the previous summer/fall and then leaving the roots in place when I harvest the mache in the spring. Curious if anyone does something similar.

I’m approaching the last frost date in my region, so I’m hardening off my tomatoes. Hardening off is important because it helps reduce the shock that an indoor, seed-started plant goes through when they are move outside because they are not accustomed to temperature fluctations and direct sunlight. To harden off a plant, I place it outdoors when the temperatures are most similar to the indoor temps for a few hours. It might be a little late to be starting some seeds for this year’s garden but my husband wanted me to try starting some flower seeds today. We were gifted a very big stack of pots and trays to start our seeds with from one of my husbands friends so I am grateful for that. -- Did you know that you could grow peanuts in Ontario? This year I’m planting a crop of heirloom Transkutukú peanuts (Arachis hypogaea), also known as Jungle peanuts, or Fastigiata Pin Stripe peanuts. These peanuts are indigenous to Ecuador & Peru and are a staple crop of the indigenous Shuar people. Transkutukú peanuts are striking with strips ranging from pink to deep fuchsia and maturing to a rich purple stripe on an orange-brown testa, or skin, when ripe. These peanuts are quick to germinate, usually within 3 – 5 days, and prefer a well-drained loose soil and long, warm daytime temperatures with about 120 – 125 days to maturity. I’ve got a few planters and raised beds I’ll be planting them this year and look forward to seeing how they grow and will be harvesting from mid September to early October.
