My list of #JobsfortheWeekend is growing. And it is growing at a rather alarming rate. The most immediate task is to actually water the pots in the back garden - especially our treasured kiwi plants. We have two plants: the taller, more successful of the two, has produced its first ever fruit. The discovery of this tiny little nugget earlier in the week caused pure joy and excitement in our household, and every evening since, without fail, we are on slug and snail patrol, determined in our mission to protect this little green bud of pride and joy. Now, I am aware that everyone has their methods for controlling snail and slug numbers. Ideally I'd much prefer to have a resident hedgehog and some frogs to deal with the situation for me; but we have neither, so I am currently resorting to the "lift and fling" method. Of course they find their way back, but I don't have the heart to do it any other way. Tending to the kiwis is just one job to do. The other tasks that really must be done, include (but are not limited to): - hardneing off the courgettes, which have started to produce buds while sitting happily inside on the reading room window sill - splitting the herbs into separate pots before they all decide to bolt - planting out (and protecting) the green beans, which are desperate for space and room to grow - and then the roses need some attention, a feed perhaps..? Especially my Sweet Magic patio rose which has dramatically shed the majority of its leaves in a display of apparent unhappiness - the cause of which is as yet to be identified. And so that is my list, and I know it will grow before the weekend is out. I also know that by the time you read this I will be out in the garden, set and determined to do one thing, but so easily getting distracted by another gardening job entirely; one that probably wasn't even on my list to begin with. Some plants and often I find the loveliest, prefer shade. These beautiful Campion fit in well here, with other wild flowers and the more common darker colour. A lot of things here can look weedy to the untrained eye ( see how I got out of that one), not at all like a cutting garden and there are weeds. Things growing on the fringes and in shadows, can often shine the most! Im not sure if I can refer to it as a hobby just yet, but I am exploring - and to an extent, understanding - a little more of what it means to photograph something well. And I can say with total confidence that taking a perfect photograph isn't easy. Having upped my game with my first proper camera, and having spent the last month reading, experimenting, and practicing "photography", I have come to realise that I have a lot to learn. But while it will take time for me to discover what it takes to capture the perfect light, to deliver that perfect composition, I am enjoying the process of learning; I am having fun. Because after all, that's what a hobby is all about. And so yesterday evening I found myself perched unceremoniously next to the bathroom sink, trying to capture the colours of the evening sun and the magenta pink stigma of the single flower that has made an impressive - and somewhat surprising - appearance on my Christmas Cactus. More than fifty photos later and these select few images are my favourite. Second stop on my farewell tour of @haberdasheryhomestead on my way to full time residency at @frankienoodlesxmastreefarm Hardy Kiwi 🥝 Planted in 2017. One male and 2 female plants. Still no fruit but they are amazingly durable and plentiful with their vines which provide perfect shelter for rabbits and my favorite media for wreath making. I took some cuttings to GA but doubt they will do much. I will definitely be ordering new plants if the cuttings don’t make it. The wreaths are GORGEOUS! Second photo is how big the plant was last fall when I was there to put everyone to bed for winter (7th planting season in the ground). My harvest on Monday, I've had so much beans that I decided to make curry beans and bottle them. You will see I like to use fresh curry leaves, you can taste the difference. And then I took a bunch of carrots I still had in the fridge and made a Copper penny salad which I also bottled. Perhaps a tad on the hot side but delicious nevertheless. Cooper Penny is an old fashioned recipe and I've adapted mine for bottling but for me personally if it doesn't have curry then it's not right. Actually I add curry leaves, curry powder, Masala and a chillie or two... Are you growing Golden Berries for the first time? I bought some golden berries from the grocery store when they were on sale and instantly thought I would turn the purchase into garden experiment. It took them some time to germinate, but after 13 days, I see some small fruit plants growing. Which is surprising as these berries were not organic. So why should you grow golden berries? Golden berries, also known as cape gooseberries, are prized for their unique flavor and nutritional benefits. They're rich in vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants, which support overall health. The tart-sweet taste makes me want to make freezer jam with them. They also have a distinctive appearance, with their golden hue and papery husk, which adds visual appeal to culinary creations. Now comes the experiment part. I am not sure if I my zone is good for growing these berries, or if I have a long enough growing time. We shall see.
