Judging by how many people were literally in line to make a flower selection at Trader Joe’s, I’d say a lot of moms are getting the $10 a dozen roses for Mother’s Day 😂 I’m just picking up the rest of my herbs so I can finish my outdoor plantings. This is the hack I use every year. The large pot of organic basil is always $3.99 at Trader Joe’s which is a much better deal than anywhere else. It goes bonkers outside in the garden every year. I have never been able to eat oregano but they had a smaller organic oregano plant for $2.49 so I’m planting that this year as well and will try to do a food exposure with it. If I can’t handle it then I can give it away. We're starting to wrap up a glorious week of herbs here at @ccmgatx but we would be amiss without some tips and tricks to go along with all this herb info!! Feel free to comment your own tips below! HARVESTING TIPS: -Keep tools (scissors, clippers, or knives) CLEAN and SHARPENED! Avoid tearing or pulling the plant and causing unnecessary damage! -Begin harvesting when the plant's growth is robust. You'll initially want to snip stems just a few inches down, right above the more established leaves. As the plant matures, you can trim more. -Trimming herbs promotes growth! If you trim the top by cutting off the tips, it will encourage branching - resulting in a stronger, bushier plant. -Herbs that have flowered typically are less flavorful, so remove buds well before they bloom. -Some herbs require different harvesting approaches, so make sure you research what is best for your plant before snipping away! PRESERVATION & STORAGE: -Do not rinse herbs until you are ready to eat them! -Basil, parsley, and cilantro will stay fresh up to a week by placing the herbs in a glass with a small amount of room temperature water. Chives, thyme, and rosemary will stay fresh up to the same time frame wrapped loosely in plastic or an unsealed baggie with a paper towel and placed in the warmer areas of the fridge. -If drying, make sure herbs are kept in a cool, dry place and turn them occasionally. Look into both the "Hanging Upside Down Method" and the "Flat Drying Method" and see what works best for you! -If freezing, clean and chop the herbs as if using them fresh. Using an ice cube tray, add one tablespoon of herbs for portioning then fill each compartment halfway with water. Freeze overnight, remove the cubes, and place them in labeled freezer bags. The sun is here and the weather has finally warmed up 🌞 May is the perfect time to get going on a growing and gardening project. We often find that seeds we sow now grow quickly and catch up with others we have sown earlier in the season. Here are some top tips for growing herbs this month: 🌱For indoor growing sow fast growing herbs like basil, coriander, thyme and rocket on a sunny windowsill 🪴Re-pot with fresh compost or feed perennial herbs like lavender, rosemary, sage. A liquid seaweed feed works well for most herbs. ✂️ Take cuttings of herbs like rosemary, sage, lavender to make spares for your friends and community 💦 Remember to water your plants well, especially those ones is small pots that live in sunny spots. Pop a saucer under pots that have dried out to help re-hydrate them 🫘 Sow seeds in pots outside or direct in the ground. We are planting herbs marshmallow, calendula, basil, clary sage, fennel, valerian and coriander this week. 🐝 Plant flowers for wildlife. Want some free sage advice? 😉 It took me years before I realized that a lot of herbs are not only useful in cooking, but they look gorgeous in your garden. They’re two-for-one plants. I grow culinary sage as an evergreen specimen plant as well as for the delicious leaves that I can use in different recipes. Have you tried Brown Butter Sage Sauce? It’s awesome on fish and over pasta. And easy to make. ⬇ Put 1 stick of butter in a large pan and cook over medium until it foams up. Add the washed and dry sage leaves and cook for 3 to 5 minutes. Don’t stir. As soon as the foam goes away, remove the pan from the heat. The sage will be a bit crispy by now. And it’s ready to use! Found a helper on my feverfew! Then I found out why the ladybug was there; a gazillion aphids! Looking even more closely, I found lacewings and another ladybug. I'll check back later, maybe there will be some ladybug eggs! This is why I hardly ever spray anything, even with organic sprays like neem, etc (which are not very discriminate). The feverfews are strong and healthy, and in order for the helper insects to come to your garden, they need something to eat! Had I reached for an organic spray, I could have hurt my helpers. My recommendation is to either leave it be, try to wash the aphids off with a burst of water, and/or try to figure out why the aphids are after my plant. Some plants are "trap" plants -no matter what the aphids go after them and prefer them. Like kale, roses, or lupine, hah! Often, it's because the plant is weak, it's in the wrong conditions (or harsh conditions), it's not getting the nutrients or water it needs, it's diseased, or it's just a nice tender youngster. Often, the healthier and happier your plants, the more they can just deal with the damage. Just like if you get run down and don't take care of yourself, you are more susceptible to illness, aphids can sense when plants are stressed and go after them first. Happy to talk more about it ! Thank you to all that helped me identify the pests that were eating my mint! I have located a few of the critters that were responsible. I beleive they are: 1. Fall armyworm. (aka Spodoptera frugiperda.) 2. Yellow-stripped armyworm. (aka Spodoptera ornithogalli.) 3. Garden slug. (aka Arion hortensias.) In case you are also having this problem, here are a few remedies, and I will post an update letting you know what worked for me. Remedies include: 1. Diamotatious earth. The sharp tiny particles stab and dehydrate, both the slugs and armyworms, as well as snails, and many other pests. To my knowledge it is completely harmless to pollinators, and other helpful insects. 2. Pick the pests individually. If you are not a fan of killing them, you can pick them off the plant by hand, and relocate them, FAR away. However it is recommended to kill them, so you can always humanely kill them by stomping on them/cutting their head off. If you use this method, I recommend coming out after dark, because this is when the pests will be most active on the plant. 3. Beer traps. A common way to kill slugs is to set a beer trap. Pour some beer in a shallow dish, and wait for the slugs to crawl inside, and drown. Field marigold (Calendula arvensis) has naturalized here on the Coastside and since it has made a home in my garden I readily use it in place of the cultivated varieties. The New Moon in May is my favorite. This is the time that I plant seeds for above ground vegetables and flowers. A time for growth, for prayer and manifestation, for being thankful for the ability to grow our own foods and herbs/flowers to help our friends, families and clients feel their best. Some will stay in the growing boxes until the next Waxing Moon (the time from the New Moon to the Full Moon) when I will transfer plants to other gardens throughout the yard.
