Wowee it’s been a whirlwind couple of weeks! We hosted our annual plant sale at the farm and have attended our first two farmers markets of the year (it’s good to be back). As well as this we’ve been composting new beds, Iain added fronts to the compost bays, said hi to the bees, we’ve planted up the tomatoes and started planting outside. Then today we held a workshop on propagating with the @landworkersalliance and a wonderful bunch of growers! It really feels like we’ve kicked the season off with a bang and we are so grateful to have seen so many of you lovely people along the way (also not forgetting all you great people we don’t actually see but come to the farmstand, thank you!). I love to grow a kitchen garden in my raised beds. Now that the weather is warming, I decided to sow carrots. 🥕 If you wanted, different crops of carrots could be sown 2-3 weeks apart to enjoy more baby carrots longer! I never turn over the soil in my raised beds anymore and I prepare them for spring in the fall. 🥕 Now all I need to do is move the mulch to the side, make a trough, and line that trough with seeding soil. I like to use seeding soil to give the baby roots some softer soil to dig into. 🥕 Carrot seeds are quite small, I sow them shallow at 1/4-1/2” deep (12-19 mm). 🥕 Then I cover them with a thin layer of Vermiculite being careful to not bury them too deep. I am a great fan of Vermiculite because it holds water so well. 🥕 I top that off with just a tiny bit of soil from the raised bed and gently press it down with a flat hand to know that the seeds are in good contact with the soil and to keep everything in place. 💧 All seeds need moisture to germinate, so I water the seeds in well. 🥕🥕💧💧One of the keys for carrot germination is to not let them dry out, so I check them daily to keep them evenly moist. I label the row with the seed variety and the date they were seeded so I can keep an eye on their rate of germination. One of our main missions is to give away, not the leftovers or extra of the garden, but to give fully what grows here - the best of the crop. Evening is best for me because young starter plants even after hardening off, will stress under hot sun. Planting in the evening gives them time to acclimate to the new soil they’ve been placed in. The cooler evening and morning dew help hydrate the plant and get it geared up for a hot day of full sun! Planting in the morning or afternoon could be a possibility when there is a strong overcast and the sun rays are not beating down on the tender seedling. Make sure to water only the base of the plant to prevent leaves from scorching. Remember, it’s best to transplant all seedlings when they have grown at least 1 or 2 sets of their true leaves. Usually when they are this big, I harden them off in a partially sunny spot for a few hours a day until they are acclimated to the outdoor weather conditions. (They’re on offer for £45 at Argos at the moment for all you bargain hunters!) 🪴 My existing small greenhouse has done me well for the past 3 years but I’ve got more space here so I may as well make use of it. I’ll be securely pegging it down to the ground all around the base, and I’m going to be putting gravel down in the veg garden area too so hopefully it won’t blow away if I weigh it down enough. I can use the shelving from the smaller greenhouse inside this one I think, so I shouldn’t need to buy any more if I can adapt those. Can’t wait to get it up and finish off the veg area. I’m slowly building up a potted fruit bush collection. First time growing a lot of this so let’s see how it turns out. We have; *three raspberry bushes - two different types (yellow and two red) *two blackberry bushes *two different types of gooseberry bushes (red and green) *a plum which apparently is growing two different types of plum trees (I think the graft went wrong (European plum and sloe plum) *a cranberry bush First time growing plums, gooseberries and cranberries so if you have any advise let me know!

Gardening has really quietened down with it being Autumn 🍂 I've been doing bits and pieces out there sporadically, including a big tidy up and refresh of the soil with sheep pallets and compost, taking out the last of the veggies, harvesting all the potatoes, planting spring bulbs (which I am soooo excited about), saving a couple lots of flower seeds and putting in two new corrugated metal garden beds next to the green house! Here's some random garden updates from the past month or so 👩🌾 1 - my tulips are in! I really hope these take off and do what their meant to. I've got 90 bulbs in this half of the bed. I want them to look a bit random and organic vs neat in rows. I've got lots of different colours and kinds including peony, fringed and the classic style 🌷 I also want them to look 'full' in their bed so 🤞 I haven't planted them too close to one another. 2 - my first lot of daffodils are sprouting 🥳 3 - more daffodils! This time I've planted some white ones 🤍 4 - I had to plant a couple more packets of ranunculus because either rats or birds ate 14/20 of my corms 🐀🐦 5 - I got all these sunflower seeds from one flower head 👏 I'll be sorted this summer for sunflower seeds for sure 🌻 6 - how pretty do the teeny tiny stars look on a cosmos?! 🌸🌟 I managed to save about 30 seeds from this plant for next summer. 7 - peep the bumble bee bum on my petunia 🐝 somehow this petunia is still thriving (not complaining 💜) 8 - we got a good douse of rain which was needed for the garden and the water tank 💧 9 - slowly (and not so patiently) waiting for my luffas to dry out on the vine. It’s been another busy weekend! Gardening, Dungeons and Dragons, fencing, prom number two, Northern Lights (we only saw a sort of pink overcast hue) and Mother’s Day all rolled into two days. It’s about time to plant up these sweet potatoes! We’re still in backyard clean-up mode here, but I feel like we are beginning to see some progress. The area behind the greenhouse is clean, mulched and brighter, we took out the small maple next to the gas line for the outdoor burners, we took out an awful Bradford pear that had re-sprouted, got rid of the rusty compost tumblers, put down more cardboard and mulch, I’m keeping an eye on my cabbage, harvested many pounds of potatoes, up potted the alpine strawberries (so tiny), pulled some green garlic, and I baked what my boys said were, “the best cinnamon buns, rolls or bread, they had ever eaten.” (Totes @smittenkitchen for the twisty cinnamon buns recipe) #kitchengarden #foodgarden #kitchenallotment #growfood #gardencoach #gardenconsultant #sweetpotato #greengarlic #mulch #potatoes #cabbage

My Mother's Day request was wrapping up the new plot prep in a day and that's exactly what I got 😉 This plot was tilled last summer, seeded with cover crop, tilled again this week and today we wrapped the perimeter and sowed it with buckwheat, peas, and oats...just in time for the rain clouds to roll in. Later this summer that cover crop will get knocked down and tarped. What will we be growing here? This fall, it will be planted with garlic. Grow Your Own Garlic 🧄🌱 Garlic is such an easy plant to grow and save seed from, and now is a great time to plant it. First things first, can you plant store bought garlic? Technically yes, but they can carry disease and are often sprayed with anti-sprouting agents. Buying a planting variety from a trusted source, should mean it’s disease free and you can choose a variety that has been bred for your climate. There are two main types of garlic, soft neck and hard neck. The neck refers to the stalk that grows upward from the garlic bulb. Hard-neck varieties are generally better for cooler climates, there are far more varieties than soft neck but they produce less cloves. They have a stalk that stems from the center of the bulb and turns quite rigid at maturity and they also produce flowering stems known as scapes. Soft-neck varieties are better suited to warmer climates, they generally produce more cloves per bulb and are the varieties you’d likely find in supermarkets as they store for longer. They don’t produce scapes and have more leaves than stalk. I plant both, usually soft neck inside the poly tunnels and hard neck outside due to their hardiness. I just break up the bulbs into separate cloves and plant the large ones with the fat end downwards and the pointy end around 2.5cm below the soil surface and around 5inches apart. The cloves can easily be sown directly in a raised bed, pot or container. But I generally sow them directly into the ground and mulch with compost. 8-9 months later you’ll have an abundance of fresh garlic! Remove the scapes when they form if growing hard neck to ensure larger bulbs and harvest from around July onwards, once the top growth has begun to die back.
