We have our first lot of crops in! We’ve planted some cauliflower, broccoli, onions and peas. I think they might be too close together but we shall see how they grow and hope for the best. Getting the pea supports ready for planting! 🫛 I've sown peas direct at the bottom of these canes, as my first round of peas never germinated (or, more likely a 🐁 or 🐌 ate them for tea!). It feels very late this year, but doesn't everything because of the poor start to spring we have had 🌧️ ?! What glorious weather! 🌞 This Saturday was absolutely beautiful - finally! 🥳 We spent the morning wandering a local woodland & foraging more wild garlic, probably our last forage of the season. We then used the wild garlic to make lots of tasty dishes! 👩🏼🍳 Sunday was dedicated to the plot. I'll admit we haven't spent much time there lately. Allotment update: things are looking flowery and after a day's work on it, rather more organised. The bees were still enjoying the purple sprouting broccoli flowers but they had to go, to make way for a new crop of something else this year. Bean wigwams are in, and one is now planted up with marvellous bean 'trail of tears', grown by the Cherokee people and carried with them during their forced displacement. Also planted some heritage purple potatoes and some oca in the same bed, with some sunflowers for company - there's already cardoon, angelica and teasels in there so I'm hoping it'll get super tall and flowery. The other main bit of work - aside from the weeding and watering - was getting the tomatoes (x25!) and chillies (x4) planted. 🍅 After taking lots of care to germinate various tomato seeds, and raise them in the comfort of a sunny bedroom window, then worry about them when they are taken to the greenhouse (rushing every morning to make sure they’ve survived the night), then potting on to make sure they get fresh compost and don’t get potbound 🫣 we always get a big bunch of random seedlings growing in the homemade compost, obviously growing from a composted tomato 🤣 . My girl and I spent the day together at the lottie plotty. We packed our cool bag and took all our lunch bits and drinks with us. I actually got everything done! The ultimate allotment tool top 3 ✨ Over the years, I’ve been trying to narrow down my allotment tool top 3 and if you told me when I started these would be my most used, I probably would have laughed at you whilst boldly carrying my fork and spade. 1. A hoe. Doesn’t have to be a fancy hoe, and they come in many shapes but a trusty hoe. Hoeing the soil to get rid of the weeds before they properly root is a godsend. It takes me 10 minutes a week to do “all the gaps” and if your hoe is sharp enough, it will break up some of the surface soil clumps too without damaging the soil structure underneath. I sow my plants with wide enough gaps to hoe inbetween too. Mine is a Wolf Garten interchangeable tool hoe, so it gets plenty of use with various lengths of pole and other tools too. 2. My hori hori knife. There’s not a lot I don’t do without this knife. The brand doesn’t really matter, but having one straight edge and one serrated edge makes all the difference. It’s SHARP, anywhere off the allotment site, I’d be arrested for carrying it. I plant with it, weed with it, make lines with it, chop stalks with it; you name it, I use it. 3. My secateurs. I’m a firm believer you need a strong, sharp pair of secateurs for life. In the gardening business world, Felcos are the top dog. It’s a worthy investment that will last you for many years if you look after them and clean them regularly…… which I need to get better at to say the least. I use an olive oil spray and wipe mine often to prevent spreading disease but they can be easily taken apart for cleaning too. All of my harvests above ground are taken with these secateurs as well as cutting flowers and sometimes canes too! A sharp pair go far. Also getting a shout out as a wild card is my bulb planter, which I use for planting no dig potatoes. Love a wild idea which really works! After the digging I emptied the contents of the two compost bins and raked it over to level. The water storage IBC container acting as a handy place for hanging pots of strawberries. Strawberries in pots acting as a handy disguise for the ugly IBC container…(with broad bean jungle in background). . We don’t have any water at our allotments, but I’ve found that I’m actually ok with that. It’s made me much more aware of the amount of water I use and also what is really needed. Having the IBC container was a game changer, it now means that I collect enough water over winter to last the summer (I also have two smaller water buts) so there’s no need to carry heavy containers of water up to the plot. Looks like any water I used this week will be topped up by the forecast next week, but for now I’m going to enjoy the last of this spurt of warm and sunny days. Pretty Violas 😁 I was beginning to think that I wouldn't get many flowers but that's all changed. The plants I put in the ground are were rubbish so I removed them. Now & then 🙌 How the allotment was looking yesterday and how the allotment looked when I got the keys at the end of October. So I’ve had this plot now for just over 6 months. Through the depths of winter and all that rain when I couldn’t really do anything. Around work and kids and general life duties, I worried whether I would have the time for a plot. But little by little it is slowly coming together. A complete work in progress and constantly evolving project, there’s already things I’ve done this year I think I’ll do differently next year. This little floof hasn’t been too well over the last couple of weeks and yesterday went in to get some of his painful teeth removed. Apart from it costing a small fortune, it went well and he seemed to come back home looking relieved. . He’s taking comfort in Jos’s mums renovated garden chair, which he believes has been done just for him. On Monday I planted out some purple sprouting broccoli, by torrential rain stopped me from properly slug proofing them. I've had a really busy week so only just able to check on them today and I was met by carnage 😭 Slugs destroyed many seedlings and probably going to kill off the one barely hanging on. I planted out the rest of the other broccoli and put down coffee grounds. Slugs are not welcome here! We also cleared some of the pond (discovered under thick thick grass) and found about 12 frogs and some newts! Anything over 20 degrees and I start to crave #autumn 😂😂 A nice couple of hours here this afternoon and I’ve built a frame and planted the #peas, raged war on the pigeons and netted the #blackcurrants and planted some perennials in the new flower bed. I got 'The Letter' again. 'Very little work done' and 'Very weedy'.What can I say. One day allotment inspections will be judging on biodiversity, efforts to assist & attract pollinators, and dandelions and nettles will be regarded as useful crops rather than weeds.
