It's magical - it's almost as if you've stepped back in time where the hustle and bustle of modern day doesn't exist. You've been transported back in time, but how far? How do you know it is an ancient woodland you've come to visit? Next time you are in a woodland look out for these: 🌸 Bluebells 🌸 Wood anemone 🌸 Primrose 🌸 Lords and ladies 🌸 Common dog violet (pale spur) and early dog violet (dark purple spur). Various species can be used to give an indication that a place has been continuously wooded for a significant length of time. Most commonly used are known as ancient woodland indicator plants. Next time you are out in the Forest see how many you can find! Can we show some love for some New York ( #zone7b) native wildflowers? The exotic plants get all the love (from me included), but some of our native flora are drop dead georgous. These were found at Hempstead Lake State Park along their walking trail. My favorite was the Eastern Blue-eyed Grass I found. Looking for wildflowers at the park was like playing I spy in the forest! You might be surprised what you find. Not pictured are the invasive roses and nightshade. In the heart of our forest home, where time dances to the rhythm of seasons, we’ve uncovered a hidden gem—the Pink Lady Slipper. As spring unfurls its emerald tapestry, the Pink Lady Slipper unfurls its own—a captivating ballet of color and scent 🌿 This native wildflower, an exquisite orchid known scientifically as Cypripedium acaule, graces our wooded landscape with its delicate presence. Sadly, they are one of the most poached native wildflowers. They are illegal to dig or pick on federal lands because they have special requirements that make them difficult to cultivate. While they are not endangered yet, they’re getting painfully close to that designation. This enchanting orchid doesn’t rush. It takes years to mature, to unfurl its petals in a silent celebration. Pink Lady slippers can take up to 16 years to reach reproductive maturity, depending on the species. The small white lady slippers generally reach maturity at 12 years old. They’re a tricky little flower and their relationship with bees is rather comical- entrapment is their game! Bees, drawn by its allure, venture into the flower pouch. But here lies the twist: once inside, they find no nectar to sip. The petals, like a secret embrace, hold them captive. They cannot go back out the way they came in. Only through a discreet exit do they emerge, only now they are covered in pollen.

Dear friends, happy Saturday and wish you a lovely weekend. I have as you know stepped back from Instagram, not from you because I find it so hard to articulate how I am feeling these days. I thank all who have written me so many lovely messages and comments on past posts. The situation in the world is extraordinary and I find it impossible that no one and nothing has found a way to stop the violence. I find it incredible that organisations set up to uphold laws and protect life are dismissed and ignored. University students manhandled, democracy in decline, free speech considered a crime and peaceful protests are met with violence. Yet good things happen, flowers bloom despite the mist and fog of this world. There is a haunting beauty of the unrelenting perseverance of humans and nature. Hope is a thin thread but it hovers like the mist. It's a beautiful thing to think that these flowers will bloom long after us. More familiar with the iconic red trillium, yesterday I stumbled upon forest floor covered in Painted Trilliums. My curiosity lead me down a rabbit hole of learning more about them.
