Not much of a photo, but it represents a triumph for me and Nature! These 2 tiny white things are spiral ladies tresses, a native orchid once common in pine flatwoods. When I was taking care of my own yard, I’d mow around them, but after having to employ various lawn services, I thought they had been killed off. Imagine my delight when I saw 2! pop up this year. The guy who mows for me now understands my obsession with a wild-ish yard, and so flagged and mowed around them. “To be, or not to be,…” someone once said. So this post isn’t about life or death, but more what is “real” and what is a “creative adaptation”. The first shot is “to be” …as is, taken last weekend in not ideal light, but I wasn’t going to waste the wonderful wild garlic in local woods whilst still with us. Aromatic from the heavy rain, with a touch of slippery mud here and there. The second is “to not be” or rather is the first, but with generative AI applied to remove natures unfortunately placed branch on the left. We can debate on what is photography and what is art, but AI is here to stay; I work in an industry where we’ve used photoshop to adjust Continuous Tone images for decades, AI just gets us there in seconds versus hours. So to the vote… as always our family vote was split, - my husband voted on the AI version, (shot 2) - my daughter the original, (shot 1) - my son also voted on the AI version, (shot 2) I wonder if there is some gender bias in the results…so I pass over to you, to continue the experiment…..do you prefer the original or the AI edit? And why? POSTPONED! I am crushed to have to postpone tonight’s collection due to an issue with the recent kiln firing. I have been troubleshooting what happened and am refiring a few test pieces to see if there is a fix that will make these gorgeous pieces functional. Since much of the flower collection was impacted, I am delaying the drop to ✨Thursday, 5/16 at 8 PM ET✨ to give myself time to recoup (cry a bit) and refire items. There are many pieces from a different kiln/clay body that came out normally, with no issue so there will definitely be an update, though possibly smaller than I’d hoped. Pottery is a craft that inherently comes with many opportunities for failure during the throwing/glazing/firing process, however, I have never had such a substantial impact to a body of work. Over 50 hours of glazing. It is heartbreaking. The flowers are by far my most time consuming designs but they also bring me such immense joy. They feel like emerging from the darkness of winter and have helped drag me from a creative rut with brightness and color. So this one hurts a lot. Please keep your fingers crossed for the refired pieces and thank you for your patience!
