Early morning trip to the stunning Foster's Green Meadow. Managed by @thewildlifetrusts it has not been ploughed in over 100 years or ever been treated with chemicals. It's a seed donor site for new meadows, including our very own Highbury Park apparently! Hard to get across on my phone camera how many green-winged orchids there were - but from one end to the other was a sea of purple and gold. Lots of bugle and cowparsley, with a smattering of bluebells.Cowslips just ending, meadowsweet waiting to emerge. Even a couple of pale pink specimens! 'Unimproved' grasslands support many rare and beautiful species, these are grassland areas that have never been ploughed, reseeded or heavily fertilised. The Green-winged orchid (Anacamptis morio) is one species that can typically be found on this type of grassland from May to June. It is a short orchid with deep purple to pale pink flowers. It gets its name from the green veins in the hood of its flowers. 🌼

Lovely day at Scotney yesterday. We had great weather and loads of colour. But the highlight was the Green Winged Orchids were out. Getting down on ground was the hardest part of taking these. I think I would have been better using a telephoto zoom than the macro. The story of Scotney & the Orchids is below. Green-winged orchids ‘Our terraces are home to a significant collection of green-winged orchids, so called due to their green veined “wings” which are visible on the dark purple flowers which grow between 5 - 15cm high during the early spring months. These orchids have been in decline for many years due to their preferred natural habitat of an undisturbed hay meadow slowly disappearing from the landscape, especially with farming methods changing over the years with the increased use of machinery and pesticides. When these orchids were first discovered growing in our terrace in 1999 we made the decision to alter the way we manage this area, with an emphasis on conserving and improving the collection, rather than managing this area from an aesthetic point of view. As this habitat is of regional significance the garden has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) by Natural England who we work closely with to ensure that the lawns are managed as an ancient hay meadow. I started my run in @warwickshirewt Coronation Meadow in Draycote this morning. What an absolutely beautiful display of cowslips and green winged orchids there is this year 🌱 Today's run was all about testing the ankle (again) and seeing what 10km felt like. Well the ankle complains when I run but is totally fine when I stop. So I suppose I should keep an eye on it; keep strapping it up and see how it goes. . . Wildflower hunt this morning! There was lots to see but the highlights for me were: Photo 1: Green-winged orchid Photo 2: Smooth Sow-thistle Photo 3: Elder Photo 4: Hawthorn All were flowering along the Millennium Coast Path near Burry Port. We also saw a Coot sitting on her nest in the reeds on the edge of a pond. She showed us her four/five eggs! No photos - sorry. 😢 The Sand Martins, House Martins and Swallows are back for the summer too. It's impossible to convey in a single photograph the sheer number of Green-winged Orchids growing at Bernwood Meadows in Oxfordshire this year. To even begin to estimate how many plants are growing in the damp fields is daunting, but I'm guessing at between 20 and 30 thousand, but that's a shot in the dark, and there could be so many more. It's a truly breathtaking and unforgettable botanical wonder. It may have been a miserable dull and wet winter and early spring, but these beautiful Orchids have really enjoyed it and are thriving.
