After looking for a few years for the double headed Caladenia drummondii- Winter spider, I have finally found two 😮🎉🎉. I’ve been enjoying taking a break from posting on here for the last few months. Life became a bit chaotic over the summer and sometimes it’s nice just to strip it all back and focus on what’s important like my time with family and friends. If you have been following for a couple of years, you'll know that this little orchid signifies the beginning of an exciting set of seasons here in Western Australia. Right now we are in the Noongar Djeran season, which is dry, cool and enjoyable. I've found 6 of these in flower today in a small area, which will hopefully flush out more specimens and species throughout the winter. It's the earliest flowering orchid for this area and my thinking it is the #WhiteBunnyOrchid #Eriochilusdilatatus Swipe left for a view of the reverse, and note the dramatic colouration change to the scene. I'm in love with the peach creamy tones of the dry foliage in the background of this first shot. I've taken another suitably beautiful image of another specimen which I'll share soon. Last year I'd been out to try and locate this tiny, delightful spider orchid without success. I'd brought 2 year old Lewis with me, and while we did look for a little while; we spent the majority of 5 hours looking at the wildflowers and insects at a snails/Lewis pace. The following week, we came back with my fellow orchid hunter @masterpiesse_photography and an invitation to meet the discoverer of this superb species and look at them together. Judith Williams is the name sake and discoverer of the #Caladeniawilliamsiae as this orchid is a credit to her vast knowledge of flora, and her discerning eye. She knows a thing or two about the biodiversity of WA. It's absolutely incredible she found this petite species. Judith, is warm, enthusiastic (prepared!) and has this infectious laugh that pairs naturally with her ability to story tell. Basically, she's a living legend! We had a lovely first day afield together. It was an absolute privilege to get not one but two days out. Named after the hare-like flowers (lepor - hare, ella - diminutive, fimbriatus - fringed), this little orchid is a communal plant in that it loves to grow in larger groups. Whilst it does not NEED fire to flower, it does make it flower more prolificly. Found in various soil conditions, it can be found in Western Australia (plus Victoria and South Australia), between Shark Bay and Israelite Bay 📆 Grows from March - June but pollinated flowers can linger much longer. What makes this orchid interesting is that it is one of the few recorded examples of being pollinated by male flying ants (Myrmecia urens). How cool is that? The Cape to Cape trek is a gorgeous and intense sandy dune walk that stretches 130km along some of Western Australia's spectacular South Western coastline. This view is from the Moses Rock location. Now, this hike was fully challenging for me due to toe injuries. Naturally there was a documentation of the healing process, which is shared here for those who are curious. You too can have the full pleasure of seeing the initial damage (they fell off within 7 days of finishing)to 6 months post hike. We have recently been camping down in Gracetown, and looking up the coastline there and also at Hamelin Bay it stretches on and on and on... my god did I have a little laugh to myself, we did that?! If you want an adventure, I highly recommend getting out there and walking this one. For foot related queries, I wore merino socks which honestly helped for comfort and a pair of running shoes that I'd broken in for 4 months. The weight of my pack and the steep decent down sand dunes did my poor tootsies in on day one. Hahaha it was 5 days of mental fortitude.
