Okay... so the warm weather keeps going here in Perth and the rain hasn't come, but there is always hope in the garden. Here are some of my native plants resprouting for autumn/djeran in my xerophytic garden. Spoilers: I'm totally watering them now they've popped up! Fingers crossed we get rain this weekend! 1- Dioscoria this is a climbing food plant and it was so small when I got it last year I wasn't sure it would come back. It has! 🎉🎉🎉 2- Sowerbaea laxiflora Purple Tassels. I love this plant, have wanted one for AGES. So stoked it's made it! 3- Dichopogon Chocolate lily. Not for eating, just for smelling. I'm intrigued! 4- Brachyscome daisy - this one's a cultivar and it flowered throughout summer (I did water it) until the last wave of 40s got it. I thought it was a gonna. "The Semi Desert Green Bird Flower" Crotaleria cunninghamii Aboriginal name Mangarr Photos and Videos clips taken on a Sand Dune in Point Samson just north of Karratha. Date 14th May 2024. Flowers throughout the year. But Mainly just from Jan to May.. Found throughout the North of Western Australia and also the Northern Territory. If you use your imagination each flower looks like a litte bird. Maybe some form of evolutionary minicry in action here or maybe not. These plants are short lived but are common especially around drainage lines such as creeks and in sandy soil. Plants grow to about 2 metres tall. Like all members of the Fabaceae family seeds are found in pods. These pods rattle!!! Red Dog Territory. Photo 7. Pilbara Landscapes with Sturt's Desert Pea and Mulla Mulla. Most Photos taken this week near Dampier. First photo on the roadside of the Cleaverville road in June 2023. Family Fabaceae Pea family. Think legumes. Did you know the Sturt Pea was first collected by William Dampier back in 1699. The specimens are still in London. The Sturt Pea is found throughout all states in Australia except Victoria. It the the state emblem of South Australia!! Pretty hard to grow in Perth for obvious reasons. Likes desert conditions. The flowers are found in a so called Raceme structure. Note photo four, you can see the different stages of flower structure from bud to pods. From the dry outback to the misty and rainy Stirling Ranges, Bluff Knoll was probably the most underprepared hike I’ve been on in a while. It’s the highest peak (3,600ft) in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, occasionally seeing snow, and the local Aboriginal people have very little good associated with it. The trail wasn’t long, and we found a few geocaches, but it was damn near a vertical staircase, and it was raining. When we got to the top we lamented at the lack of a view, but thankfully the clouds parted before our knees were brutalized by the staircase descent. The "Painted Lady" - What a sight to see when it is in Full Bloom! . Gompholodium scabrum. The species is endemic to Western Australia with a wide distribution throughout the South West of the state from just North of Perth to Esperance. Likes Sandy soils Photos taken in September and October.in Melaleuca park just north east of Perth and and also in the Perth Hilks near Gidgegannup. Has a very short flowering period. One week it is in full bloom, the next week the purple is gone. Don't try and cut the flowers stem and bring home. Pretty much dies straight away. Anyway no need. See it in all its glory in its natural environment. A member of the Pea family with two seeds per pod. At Mount Dale in the Perth Hills on the Weekend. Photos taken on the 27th April 2024. First time ever at this location. Can reached it from either Brookton Highway or Mundaring through a pretty good gravel road but note the gravel road does have a few corrugation sections. About 40 km road trip. BUT WORTH IT!!! Even though very dry the Grass Trees stand out. With amazing views from the lookout. Will come back in spring. Xanthorrhoea preissii. NYOONGAR NAME: Balga Very common throughout the South West of Western Australia. They live in various soils types. Mt Dale is made of Granitic rock and lateritic soils. These plants are Monocots like grasses. The trunk of the plant which grows very slowly in made up of leaf bases that get stick together by the plant sap which is a kind of resin. Grows very slowly at around 1cm a year. Some plants are over 400 years old with multiple heads and can grow over 5 metres in height. The flowers are found in SPEAR like structure up to 3 metres in length.At the time of the photo most have dried out and are curved and twisted. Flowers from June to December but fire does promote flowering. This is a bonus to the fauna of the area as the nectar and seeds are a great food source. Photos taken in few places near the Gingin Gravity Discovery Centre, Yanchep NP, Melaleuca Park Reserve and in Gigdiegannup in Sept and Oct. Quite common and grows in a number of soil types throughout the South West of Western Australia. From the Nullabor to Geraldton. Even in coastal limestone and on granites outcrops like those in the wheatbelt.. Does prefer acidic soils. Produces purple to blue flowers between May to November. Leaves alternate along the stems. What a way to celebrate "Banksia Friday". The Coast Banksia that has a distribution along the Eastern Coast of Australia especially in Southern NSW. Took many many photos of this marvellous Banksia species in many Habitats on our recent trip to this side of the country between March and April 2024. Only problem not endemic to WA! So Tough. Lives in poor sandy or loamy soils, can be water logged, can be saline. Saw one growing in the water near a bank in a Salty inlet near Ulladulla Great for the garden. Species name - Banksia integrifolia Coast Banksia. Flowers between January to June. As you can see from the photos can have a whole spectre of reproductive structures from inflorescence flowers cones to the woody cones on the one branch. Can grow to a height of 15 metres but there are dwarf varieties such as the Sentinel. Popular in gardens. Family Proteaceace Did you realise that their are 180 species of Banksia with all but one endemic to Australia.
